Book excerpt: A middle grade novel by Kate Egan, Golden Ticket, explores friendship, academic anxiety, and what it means to be special. “It’s practically like a private school,” Mrs. Silver said bitterly. “The best teacher, for such a tiny group of students. Who wouldn’t succeed in a class like that?” She took off her sunglasses to glare at the dad. “Those kids get picked out when they’re seven years old, and they get handed a golden ticket. Of course they become stars.” Eleven-year-old Ash McNulty is one of the “gifted and talented” kids at her school, spending most of her day in a special class with a few other advanced students. As the end of fifth grade rolls around, she should be on top of the world. According to everyone, she’s going to rock junior high! But Ash has a secret: She can’t keep up with her advanced classmates anymore. The minute she asks for help though, everyone will know she’s not who they think she is. She’s not so smart. She might not even be that special. And her parents will be crushed to discover the truth. If Ash can win the Quiz Bowl, though, that will show everyone that she is still on top. If she gets a lucky break ahead of time, all the better. Except that “lucky break” backfires . . . And Ash is left to question everything she thought she knew about school, friends, and success.

Download or read book The Golden Ticket written by Sharon Powell and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's been over 55 years since Roald Dahl's classic "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" hit bookshelves across the world and yet continues to be one of the most sought-after children's novels. The book was adapted into a movie in 1971 with Gene Wilder in the titular role. The story follows the adventures of five lucky children who win Golden Tickets to visit the magical Chocolate Factory set up by Willy Wonka. The factory is full of surprises and one that leaves onlookers amused! Willy decides to open the doors of his factory to 5 young children for a once in a lifetime experience. Charlie Bucket, one of the main protagonists of the movie, lives with his parents and grandparents in a humble household. They belong to a financially backward community and have cabbage soup on most days. The Golden Ticket that Charlie wins is hidden inside one of Wonka's famous chocolate bars, leaving his grandfather ecstatic! But before he wins his ticket, Augustus Gloop wins the first coveted Golden Ticket. He is an overweight kid who is often at the receiving end of jokes since he loves stuffing his mouth with food. The first girl who wins the ticket is Veruca Salt, an obnoxious kid who throws tantrums to get what she wants. Violet Beauregarde is the other one and an over-enthusiastic girl who ends up turning into a giant blueberry at the factory. Mike Teave is the fifth child to win the ticket and is eliminated from the factory after he jumps into the television. From chocolate fountains to wallpapers that taste like fruits, Wonka puts out brilliant chocolate/candy themed inventions. My personal favorite must be the three-course gum and giant Gummy Bears! In case you are wondering what I'm talking about, read on to find out more!

Download or read book The Fortunate Ones written by Ed Tarkington and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Fortunate Ones feels like a fresh and remarkably sure-footed take on The Great Gatsby, examining the complex costs of attempting to transcend or exchange your given class for a more gilded one. Tarkington’s understanding of the human heart and mind is deep, wise, and uncommonly empathetic. As a novelist, he is the real deal. I can’t wait to see this story reach a wide audience, and to see what he does next.” —Paula McLain, author of The Paris Wife When Charlie Boykin was young, he thought his life with his single mother on the working-class side of Nashville was perfectly fine. But when his mother arranges for him to be admitted as a scholarship student to an elite private school, he is suddenly introduced to what the world can feel like to someone cushioned by money. That world, he discovers, is an almost irresistible place where one can bend—and break—rules and still end up untarnished. As he gets drawn into a friendship with a charismatic upperclassman, Archer Creigh, and an affluent family that treats him like an adopted son, Charlie quickly adapts to life in the upper echelons of Nashville society. Under their charming and alcohol-soaked spell, how can he not relax and enjoy it all—the lack of anxiety over money, the easy summers spent poolside at perfectly appointed mansions, the lavish parties, the freedom to make mistakes knowing that everything can be glossed over or fixed? But over time, Charlie is increasingly pulled into covering for Archer’s constant deceits and his casual bigotry. At what point will the attraction of wealth and prestige wear off enough for Charlie to take a stand—and will he? The Fortunate Ones is an immersive, elegantly written story that conveys both the seductiveness of this world and the corruption of the people who see their ascent to the top as their birthright.
