Book excerpt: An awe-inspiring, unforgettable journey of scientific exploration from Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw, the international bestselling authors of Why Does E=MC2? and The Quantum Universe, with 55 black-&-white and 45 full-color pages featuring photographs, diagrams, maps, tables, and graphs We dare to imagine a time before the Big Bang, when the entire universe was compressed into a space smaller than an atom. And now, as Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw show, we can do more than imagine: we can understand. Universal takes us on an epic journey of scientific exploration. It reveals how we can all come to grips with some of the most fundamental questions about our Earth, Sun, and solar system--and the star-filled galaxies beyond. How big is our solar system? How quickly is space expanding? How big is the universe? What is it made of? Some of these questions can be answered on the basis of observations you can make in your own backyard. Other answers draw on the astonishing information now being gathered by teams of astronomers operating at the frontiers of the known universe. At the heart of all this lies the scientific method. Science reveals a deeper beauty and connects us to each other, to our world, and to our universe. Science reaches out into the unknown. As Universal demonstrates, if we dare to imagine, we can do the same.

Book The Golden Gate

Download or read book The Golden Gate written by Robert Buettner and published by Baen Books. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LIVE FOREVER—OR DIE TRYING When the world’s richest man is the victim of a car bomb and literally blown off the Golden Gate Bridge the attack is attributed to terrorists and the world moves on. But some still wonder. Was Manuel Colibri targeted because, as Silicon Valley rumor has it, he was about to make the dream that people alive today can live to be one thousand come true? Two people are pursuing the truth. Tech journalist Kate Boyle and recovering Iraq war veteran Ben Shepard race through the Bay Area chasing the only clues the reclusive Colibri left behind. They discover not only each other but a cosmic secret that can change human history—and may cost them their lives. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). Praise for The Golden Gate: "Futuristic and imaginative, The Golden Gate by Robert Buettner sweeps across continents and centuries in a thrilling chase for the truth about longevity. The science is fascinating, and the suspense never lets up. Readers will revel in this terrific roller-coaster ride."—Gayle Lynds, New York Timesbestselling author of The Assassins About Robert Buettner's Balance Point: "Fans of classic military SF will enjoy the twists and quips . . . "—Publishers Weekly "Buettner . . . conducts his thriller action with suspense and plausibility. All the separate threads balance neatly, as if in homage to the book's themes of balance between antagonistic polities . . . and [Balance Point] carries forward nobly the kind of core SF tale pioneered by writers such as Anderson, Gordon Dickson, Christopher Anvil, James Schmitz, and C. J. Cherryh, offering entertainment aplenty with thoughtful meditations on how humanity can get along with itself or not!"—Locus About Robert Buettner and the Orphan's Legacy Series: “Buettner goes well beyond . . . military science fiction . . . he understands . . . living as a soldier—the boredom punctuated by terror, the constant anxiety and self-doubt, the random chaos that battle always is, and the emotional glue that holds together people who may have nothing in common except absolute responsibility for one another's lives.” —Joe Haldeman, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author “[O]nce in a while . . . a contemporary author penetrates to the heart of Heinlein's vision . . . to replicate the master's effects. . . . [O]ne such book [is] Robert Buettner's Orphanage.” —The Washington Post “Entertaining. Buettner shows the Heinlein touch.” —Denver Post

Book excerpt: Talks on Ko Hsuan’s The Classic of Purity “Tao seems to be the only life vision which is total. It does not deny the earth, it does not deny the sky. It accepts both, it accepts the unity of both. It says the man who has come to know spontaneous purity and stillness, who has become relaxed with the whole, with the law of the ultimate—in him heaven and earth are united. “I believe in the whole. To me, to trust the whole is the only way to be holy and to trust the whole is the only way to be whole. And when you are whole, life is bliss, life is benediction, life is a celebration.” Osho

Book Currents Through the Golden Gate

Download or read book Currents Through the Golden Gate written by Ernest Paul Petzrick and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 9 November through 15 December, 1992 a bottom mooring consisting of an upward looking acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) and a conductivity-temperature pressure (CTD) instrument were deployed in the Golden Gate. Tidal constituents were derived from least squares fit on pressure and current data. The amplitude of the M2 tide was 0.6 m and 100 cm/s, and primary tidal constituents were about 0.3 m and 20 cm/s. Current profiles were largely barotropic and one dimensional. Overtides and compound tides had amplitudes less than 0.02 m and 5 cm/s but had baroclinic structure and two dimensional hodographs. Tidal currents appear to be hydraulically driven. Mean flow and transport were directed at 110 deg T at 23 cm/s and 45 cu.m/s; indicative of the two dimensional structure of the Golden Gate. Mean energy fluxes at the site were 30,000 W for kinetic energy advection and 8,500,000 W for the work done by pressure. If representative of the channel, they imply a total energy flux of 8. 5 x 1O to the 9th power W through the Gate.
