Download or read book The Coming Crisis of the World Or the Great Battle and the Golden Age written by Hollis Read and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming Crisis of the World, or the Great Battle and the Golden Age: The Signs of the Times Indicating the Approach of the Great Crisis and the Duty of the Church It seems to the writer much to be deplored that that happy age, -that golden age of Christianity, on which prophets have loved to dwell, and sacred poets to sing, and the great teach ers in Israel to expatiate; and of which saints of all ages have delighted to talk and write, to hope and pray, should, in some quarters, be'so treated as to prejudice the minds of pious, sober men against the discussion of it. Because it has been made the theme of strange speculations and wild vagaries, it is not the less a theme suited to raise the hopes, and wing the faith, and fill with holy joy the hearts of all God's people. Discard the idea of a yet to come golden age of the Church, and how can we vin dicate the ways of God in the dispensations of his grace among men? Only the scanty first fruits shall be gathered in during the present dispensation. During these times of the Gentiles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Age of the World Under the Personal Reign of King Jesus With Concomitant Events God's Word; and I felt I must commit to writing what I had so learned. I need scarcely say that I claim no literary merit for the book, for I am not a literary man; but, having obtained such abundant satisfaction and profit to my own soul in the study of this delightful subject, I am conscious that others should obtain the same: and to this end, I have let the Word speak for itself as far as possible; and instead of referring the reader to the various passages, to be looked up in the Bible, I have given them in full: this has necessitated a somewhat larger book than would otherwise have been re quired, but this is more than compensated for by the ad vantage of having the text at hand, without the trouble and loss of time in turning it up. And now I commend to the reader this humble effort to spread abroad what I believe to be the Teaching of God's Word on these great events, which must shortly come to pass: praying God's blessing to accompany the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Canaan or the Golden Age Restored: Chiefly Drawn From the Spiritual Sense of the First Seven Chapters of the Book of Joshua All the churches which have existed upon the earth are brought to view in the Bible in chronological order, and their several qualities are represented by Abraham and his posterity. Thus the spiritual history of our race is written in the language of symbols, much more accurately than would have been possible to write it in any human language. Four distinct churches, apart from various minor branches, have come and gone, and the fifth and last is now in its formative state, and will soon be fully organized and receive the influx of life which is peculiar to a Celestial Church. Book A History of the Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Church Classic Reprint written by Johann Joseph Ignaz Von Dollinger and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church The present volume will conduct us to the commencement of that eventful period - the Reformation. To the learned reader, many things may appear wanting in this volume. He will perhaps express his surprise at finding no mention made of the institution of those Religious Orders which have given to the world so many great men - seraphic saints, eloquent preachers of the word of God, profound theologians, learned philosophers - men great in every way of which our nature may be proud. He will wonder, too, that he reads nothing of those heresies which, during the period comprised in this volume, troubled the peace, of the Church, and prepared the way for that mighty revolution which has laid so many, before beautiful, regions spiritually waste. But it must be remembered that only the External History of the Church is here given. The succeeding volume, which is not yet published in the original German, will, it is confidently trusted, more than satisfy those who favour this work with their perusal, on the subjects which may at first appear to have been omitted. The next volume will contain the Internal History of the Church during the Middle Ages, and, from the sources that have been opened by the laborious industry of the learned author, much light will be thrown on this most interesting portion of Ecclesiastical History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Days of the Early English Church, Vol. 1: From the Arrival of Theodore to the Death of Bede IT was many years ago, when I used to discuss early English history with Mr. Freeman (with whom I had more than one sharp polemic), that I formed the intention of sometime trying to analyse its early sources and to unriddle its difficulties and obscurities in greater accordance with modern scientific methods than do some popular guides. It is indeed rather scandalous that in this particular period of our national story we should be so far behind both the Germans and French in our methods of writing history, and should still present so much matter for criticism in our books on the subject. Book The Golden Days of the Early English Church Vol 3

Download or read book The Golden Days of the Early English Church Vol 3 written by Henry H. Howorth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Days of the Early English Church, Vol. 3: From the Arrival of Theodore to the Death of Bede It is clear from the absence of any reference to the place of his birth or to his parentage that he was of humble origin. Bede claims that he had heard a story about his early life from Trumwine, the Bishop of the Picts,1 who had been told it by Cuthberht himself. It illustrates the extravagant ascetic views then prevailing, which extended even to small children, who were taught that it was really wicked to jest and play games with other boys. Cuthberht excelled at such pastimes, and was a leader in them, and never seemed to weary, notably at leaping, running, wrestling, or standing on his head. One day a number of boys, Cuthberht being one, were engaged in a wrestling match in a meadow, when a small boy of about three years old ran up to him and exhorted him not to indulge in such idle sports, but to subject his mind as well as his limbs to a grave deportment. When Cuthberht took no heed of what he said, the small boy began to weep bitterly and, addressing him, asked how he who had been consecrated by God to teach even his elders could thus behave and be thus frivolous among children. Cuthberht listened attentively, and, being much moved by what the smaller child had said, altered his conduct, and thus, moralises our historian, the wantonness of a boy was restrained by the agency of a child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of God: A Social History Like all histories, however, this is also a unique story. The twists and turns in the history of the Church of God smack of the isolation of Cleveland, Tennessee, and of the leadings of a.i Tomlinson and other homespun prophets. Crews writes of earn est men struggling to hammer out a code of morality in a region where tobacco-raising was ethically more problematic than slum housing and where the kkk was far better known than the afl. In the end, this is the story of a church that contributed to the birth of worldwide Pentecostalism but that has spent most of its history in its own world confronting its own problems. Crews knows the Church of God well - both experientially and as a scholar. He has read the writings of the prophets; he has talked and sung with the true believers. All denominational his tory is controversial; no telling of it is likely to satisfy everyone. But Crews has written with fairness and restraint about a move ment that could hardly have expected such respect twenty years ago. That is as it should be. Pentecostals have earned a place in history, and it is fitting that their stories be told respectfully. Having won such regard, it is fitting that Pentecostals listen to an objective accounting of their past. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
