Book The Golden Age of Middle Kingdom Pharaohs

Download or read book The Golden Age of Middle Kingdom Pharaohs written by Ezra Ivanov and published by EZRA IVANOV. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 2200 BC, the court stopped building monuments after half a millennium. In the meantime, the royal house, which was responsible for constructing these monuments, vanished entirely. A king or a court could never construct a sizable stone monument for the next century and a half, despite the kingdom's access to a river, copper, and wheat crop. In southern Sinai, a long line of royal inscriptions commemorating courtly expeditions to obtain copper abruptly ends. Only the dates of the monument-making kings who ruled on either side can determine the length of the following interregnum, as traditional histories blink, stutter, and stop after the reign of Pepi II. During the same blank period, they smashed the sarcophagi lids of the Memphite pyramids, slid them aside, and removed the royal corpses. They partially destroyed the nobles' tombs and left their burial shafts open, allowing bats and owls to evade them. The attacks also targeted temple statues and tomb chapels belonging to the noble class. These attacks have left ancient royal temples with surprising quantities of their original contents, including richly decorated ritual equipment, valuable copper fittings, and even fragile papyrus records. Despite the sacked burial and the buried entrance to the pyramid under rubble, Wenis' Pyramid Texts remained perfectly preserved.

Egypt's leading Egyptologist, Zahi Hawass, here tells the story of this golden king, a short-lived pharaoh who came to the throne of Egypt as a child and died before the age of twenty, and of the royal dynasty that bred him. The reader meets Tutankhamun's grandparents, the Sun King Amenhotep III and his beautiful wife Tiye as well as the boy-king's 'heretic' father, Akhenaten, his stepmother Neferiti, and his half-sisters, the sun-kissed princesses of Amarna. Tutankhamun lived and died during one of the most fascinating periods in Egyptian history; this book provides a window into this extraordinary time of turmoil and treasure." "The Golden Age of Tutankhamun is illustrated, primarily with photographs of objects from the traveling exhibit. "Tutankhamun and the Golden Beyond: Treasures from the Valley of the Kings," which takes objects from Cairo's Egyptian Museum collections to Switzerland and Japan. Many of these photographs were taken by National Geographic photographer Kenneth Garrett, supplemented by archival photographs from the era of the tomb's discovery, a fascinating period of transition - in archaeology as much as politics - between the age of colonialism and the dawn of Egyptian nationalism."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle Kingdom (ca. 2030–1650 B.C.) was a transformational period in ancient Egypt, during which older artistic conventions, cultural principles, religious beliefs, and political systems were revived and reimagined. Ancient Egypt Transformed presents a comprehensive picture of the art of the Middle Kingdom, arguably the least known of Egypt’s three kingdoms and yet one that saw the creation of powerful, compelling works rendered with great subtlety and sensitivity. The book brings together nearly 300 diverse works— including sculpture, relief decoration, stelae, jewelry, coffins, funerary objects, and personal possessions from the world’s leading collections of Egyptian art. Essays on architecture, statuary, tomb and temple relief decoration, and stele explore how Middle Kingdom artists adapted forms and iconography of the Old Kingdom, using existing conventions to create strikingly original works. Twelve lavishly illustrated chapters, each with a scholarly essay and entries on related objects, begin with discussions of the distinctive art that arose in the south during the early Middle Kingdom, the artistic developments that followed the return to Egypt’s traditional capital in the north, and the renewed construction of pyramid complexes. Thematic chapters devoted to the pharaoh, royal women, the court, and the vital role of family explore art created for different strata of Egyptian society, while others provide insight into Egypt’s expanding relations with foreign lands and the themes of Middle Kingdom literature. The era’s religious beliefs and practices, such as the pilgrimage to Abydos, are revealed through magnificent objects created for tombs, chapels, and temples. Finally, the book discusses Middle Kingdom archaeological sites, including excavations undertaken by the Metropolitan Museum over a number of decades. Written by an international team of respected Egyptologists and Middle Kingdom specialists, the text provides recent scholarship and fresh insights, making the book an authoritative resource.

Book excerpt: Voices from Ancient Egypt is an anthology presenting translations of sixty documents from a golden age of ancient Egyptian culture (c. 2081 - 1600 BC). The documents illustrate all aspects of life and the place of literacy in an early civilisation. The 'voices' range from the high formal literature of religious rituals and royal monuments to the hurried requests of the bureaucrats and the jokes of harrassed workmen. They tell a tale not only of the intellectual beliefs of the elite, but of family feuds, love and murder, as well as the pastoral dreams of a society trying to attain its vision of absolute order in a chaotic universe. Through extensive research over many decades of work, reveals how the grand narratives of 19th and 20th century Egyptologists have misled us by portraying a culture of cruel monarchs and chronic war.
