Book The Golden Age of Coach Travel

Download or read book The Golden Age of Coach Travel written by Peter Robinson and published by Bloomsbury Shire Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coach travel had a huge impact on Britain in the twentieth century, the charabancs and buses of the early twentieth century began to challenge the railways for supremacy --tourist resorts, at first distressed by what to do with the influx of vehicles and unruly holidaymakers, soon adapted to capitalize on these new opportunities. After the war, the package tour (satirized by several 'Carry On' films) came into its own, thousands of people travelling on coaches of varying luxury to destinations at home and abroad. In this fascinating history of long-haul bus journeys, leisure and travel historians Peter Robinson and Harry Cameron describe the evolution from horse-drawn omnibuses to charabancs and on to the motor coaches which carried people on holidays and business in the UK and abroad, examining how public demand changed the design of the buses and the deals that bus operators offered. They also explain the challenges presented by private car ownership in the later twentieth century and the role of buses in popular culture.

Book excerpt: A walk through history with man’s best friend, with stops in Alaska, the Middle East, and beyond—includes over 250 photos of canines at work. Handle various dogs engaged in their traditional tasks, Mike Loades takes us on his adventures in the Jordanian desert, where he shares the saddle of his camel with a Saluki, and in the green hills of Wales, where he works cattle with a Corgi. He mushes Huskies in Alaska, drives carriages with Dalmatians, and flies falcons with Spaniels. Each encounter not only highlights the bond between humans and dogs, it also frames that connection in its historical context. Different types of dogs appear the way they do because, at some stage in their development, they were bred selectively for a specialist job. The author takes key types on a walk through history. Along the way he explores the methods and practices of their original occupations. He delves into when, where, and why they were first bred as the types we recognize today. This fascinating and engaging book includes over 250 stunning color photographs of dogs in action, resulting in an illuminating journey through many cultures and time periods—and a personal, heartfelt tribute to the enduring partnership between humans and dogs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stagecoach was the travel wonder of its age: passengers could board a fast coach and be shuttled from one end of the country to the other, stopping only in stages to hitch up fresh horses and take a little light refreshment at coaching inns. Though coaches first appeared in the sixteenth century, stagecoach travel reached its heyday between about 1750 and 1850, leading to great improvements in British roads, which in return encouraged faster and expanded services. This book details the routes, proprietors and coaching inns, the customers and why they chose to travel, and also the perils of early road travel, including highwaymen. The legacy of stagecoach travel is also explored, making this an essential introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recurrent trope in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British fiction compares reading to traveling and asserts that the pleasures of novel-reading are similar to the joys of a carriage journey. Kyoko Takanashi points to how these narratives also, however, draw attention to the limits of access often experienced in travel, and she demonstrates the ways in which the realist novel, too, is marked by issues of access both symbolic and material. Limited Access draws on media studies and the history of books and reading to bring to life a history of realism concerned with the inclusivity of readers. Examining works by Henry Fielding, Laurence Sterne, Walter Scott, Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, and George Eliot, Takanashi shows how novelists employed metaphors of transport to constantly reassess what readers could and could not access. She gives serious attention to marginalized readers figured within the text, highlighting their importance and how writers were concerned about the "limited access" of readers to their novels. Discussions of transport allowed novelists to think about mediation, and, as this study shows, these concerns about access became part of the rise of the novel and the history of realism in a way that literary history has not yet recognized.
