Download or read book The Gold Ring written by Kenneth D. Ackerman and published by Viral History Press LLC. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1869, two young speculators, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, Jr., undertook perhaps the most audacious financial operation in American history - the cornering of the national gold supply. Fisk and Gould manipulated prices to the point that legitimate commerce froze to a halt. When the federal Treasury finally broke the corner on Black Friday, September 24, the price of $100 gold coin fell from $160 to $130 in fifteen minutes, sparking a national financial panic, a stock market depression, and the bankruptcy of major trading houses. The scandal reached the very household of President Ulysses Grant, and only the intervention of their friend, Boss Tweed of Tammany Hall, saved Fisk and Gould from personal ruin.

Download or read book The Last Gold Ring written by Wiley Backlash and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-07-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This saga is the expression of me understanding myself, also to my children so they can reconcile the persona and actions of the father. To Boo, my wife, and close friends who watched helplessly as I imploded. I used all my God-given talents to become wealthy then burned it to the ground before I turned forty-five, and I took them with me. Untouchable to touching nothing. Ironically one of my true passions is studying religion, history, and philosophy. Then I went and tried to twist it with my big-ass head and fell headfirst into my own trap. As my own captive alone, I had major time on my hands to reflect. Remorse wasn’t good enough; I had to make amends not for them but for me. Every word I had ever read now had a new deeper meaning, mixed in with a lot of dogma. A dramatic divine disclosure followed. I clearly saw all I have ever done, and clarity filled in the motive. I cried alone for months. The revelation of how I slowly gave in to a dark abyss made me hang my head low. So many times and ways I could have stopped and just didn’t. My brilliance was going to ride the storm out, one of my gifts. It was a TKO first second of the first round, and I had the pleasure of seeing it come. I did not believe anything could stop me in my tracks, but I could. It was not like I had to give up something to begin again. I had nothing left; that part was easy. I gave into something bigger than me after hurting all I knew, with me being hurt the most. I knew I was not a singular but part of a whole, and from now on, I would help the idea instead of causing destruction in my wake. In so doing, I embarked on a mission to rediscover truth then live it no matter where it led. This is that idea written down. It is all the little things we are capable of. Now I can’t stop, so there will always be more to come. Peace.
Download or read book Dirty Gold written by Jay Weaver and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive story of the illegal gold trade from South America, and the three Miami businessmen who got rich on it—until it all came crashing down. In March of 2017, a team of federal agents arrested Juan Pablo Granda, Samer Barrage, and Renato Rodriguez, or as they came to be known, "the three amigos." The trio—first identified publicly by the authors of this book—had built a $3.6 billion dollar business in metals trading, mostly illegal Peruvian gold mined in the rain forest. Their arrest and subsequent prosecution laid bare more than a scheme between a few corrupt traders. Dirty Gold lifts the veil on a massive and very illegal international business that is more lucrative than trafficking cocaine, and often just as dangerous. As this award-winning team of current and former Miami Herald reporters shows, illegal gold mines have become a haven for Latin American drug money. The gold is sold to metals traders, and ultimately to scores of unwitting Americans in their jewelry and phones. By following the trail of these three traders, Dirty Gold leads us into a sprawling criminal underworld that has never before been in full view.

Download or read book Who s on First written by Lloyd Schwartz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-08-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is no one quite like Lloyd Schwartz, whose unique combination of comedy and pathos is rare in contemporary American poetry. Over the years and books, Schwartz has developed a pitch-perfect ear for dialogue, producing poems that are hilarious in their depiction of unsettling social situations, while still managing to find the kernel of poignancy buried in everyday encounters. He is a master of the speech-driven style of verse, which is based on overheard, interrupted, or invented conversations that are by turns humorous and deeply unsettling, intimate yet decorous. In the new poems section, Schwartz brings his broad experience across the arts (including his many years as a music critic and commentator) to bear, with poems that recall the feeling of both performing and apprehending a piece of music, say, or a painting, a film, or a poem; he explores the figures depicted within these artworks, their fears and desires, revealing whole unexplored, interior worlds, a universe in a pack of tarot cards. This collection, which gathers the very best of Schwartz's work over his long, distinguished career, amply displays the tenderness and delicacy of feeling that we've come to rely on in his poetry. "Who's on First?" is a fitting capstone to a long life lived in the arts"--
