Book The Gold Mines of the World

Download or read book The Gold Mines of the World written by James Herbert Curle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-23 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gold Mines of the World: Written After an Inspection of Nearly Five Hun-Dred Mines in Transvaal, Rhodesia, West Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, New Zealand, India, Malay Peninsula, Siberia, United States, Alaska, Klondyke, British Columbia, Mexico, Per Of the total yield, the English-speaking peoples were responsible for about 1; or, say, 88 per cent, much the greater part of this being produced in their own territories. Indeed, they may be said to show as marked a bias towards pioneering, of which gold mining is a branch, as the Germans towards music, or the Chinese to husbandry. It is not, however, correct to assume that the English-speaking countries contain more gold than other countries. Gold is one of the most widely distributed metals, and if the rest of the world were to put the energy and the capital into gold-mining that the English-speaking peoples do, the discrepancy in production would be much less than it is now. So far as I am able to judge. Such countries as Russia, Siberia, China, Korea, the Dutch Indies, and Central and South America ought to produce far more gold than they do; but it seems more than likely that the rest of the world will not take up the big and costly work of systematically exploring these countries for gold, and that on the English-speaking peoples, following up this favourite pursuit of theirs, will fall the greater part of the needed development. A more important division of the world's output of gold, so far as we are concerned, is that produced by British capital, as com pared with the production from all other countries combined. Download or read book Going for Gold written by Jack H. Morris and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Details how Newmont Mining revolutionized the gold mining industry and remains the second largest gold miner in the world Jack H. Morris asserts that Newmont is the link between early gold mining and today’s technology-driven industry. We learn how the company’s founder and several early leaders grew up in gold camps and how, in 1917, the company helped finance South Africa’s largest gold company and later owned famous gold mines in California and Colorado. In the 1960s the company developed the process to capture “invisible gold” from small distributions of the metal in large quantities of rock, thereby opening up the rich gold field at Carlin, Nevada. Modern gold mining has all the excitement and historic significance of the metal’s colorful past. Instead of panning for ready nuggets, today’s corporate miners must face heavy odds by extracting value from ores containing as little as one-hundredth of an ounce per ton. In often-remote locations, where the capital cost of a new mine can top $2 billion, 250-ton trucks crawl from half mile deep pits and ascend, beetle-like, loaded with ore for extraction of the minute quantities of gold locked inside. Morris had unique access to company records and the cooperation of more than 80 executives and employees of the firm, but the company exercised no control over content. The author tells a story of discovery and scientific breakthrough; strong-willed, flamboyant leaders like founder Boyce Thompson; corporate raiders such as T. Boone Pickens and Jimmy Goldsmith; shakedowns by the Indonesian government and monumental battles with the French over the richest mine in Peru; and learning to operate in the present environmental regulatory climate. This is a fascinating story of the metal that has ignited passions for centuries and now sells for over $1,000 an ounce.

Download or read book Gold written by Matthew Hart and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the award-winning author of Diamond: A blazing exploration of the human love affair with gold that “combines the engaging style of a travel narrative with sharp-eyed journalistic exposé” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, the price of gold skyrocketed—in three years more than doubling from $800 an ounce to $1900. This massive spike drove an unprecedented global gold-mining and exploration boom, much bigger than the gold rush of the 1800s. In Gold, acclaimed author Matthew Hart takes you on an unforgettable journey around the world and through history to tell the extraordinary story of how gold became the world’s most precious commodity. Beginning with a page-turning report from the crime-ridden inferno of the world’s deepest mine, Hart traveled around the world to the sites of the hottest action in gold today, from the biggest new mine in China, to the highly secretive London gold exchange, and the lair of the world’s most powerful gold trader in Geneva, Switzerland. He profiles the leaders of the gold market today, the nature of the current boom, and the likely prospects for the future. From the earliest civilizations, when gold was an icon of sacred and kingly power, Hart tracks its evolution, through conquest, murder, and international mayhem, into the speculative casino-chip that the metal has become. He ends by telling the story of the massive flows of gold that have occurred in the wake of the financial crisis and what the world’s leading experts are saying about the profound changes underway in the gold market and the prospects for the future. “Compelling, stylish, and impressively researched” (The Boston Globe), Gold is a wonderful historical odyssey with important implications for today’s global economy.

Book Gold Mines in North Carolina

Download or read book Gold Mines in North Carolina written by John Hairr and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first gold discovery in the United States occurred in 1799 when young Conrad Reed went fishing in Little Meadow Creek in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. The 17-pound nugget he found was used by his family as a doorstop until they figured out what the strange rock was. This chance discovery set off the first gold rush in the nation's history. For more than a century, men extracted gold from the rolling hills and valleys of the North Carolina piedmont, as well as from the high peaks and rugged mountains of the western part of the state. Prior to the California Gold Rush of 1849, North Carolina led the nation in production of this precious metal and was the largest gold-producing state in the South well into the 20th century.
