Book The Making of Australia s Gold Coast

Download or read book The Making of Australia s Gold Coast written by Alan J. Blackman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blackman draws on original material and the work of many earlier researchers to paint a verbal picture of the evolution of a remarkable city. In an easy-to-read style, he highlights some of the conditions, key events, and individuals that have led to the development of Australia’s Gold Coast. The story of the City of Gold Coast is more than just any story. It describes the growth of Australia’s sixth-largest city, the nation’s most populous city that is not a state capital. A city of more than 600,000, it has grown at a rate of four per cent yearly since the 1950s. It sustains a growth rate well ahead of its infrastructure and its economy’s capacity to provide full-time employment to the many new arrivals. A city heavily reliant on tourism and construction, it is regularly subjected to the boom and bust of a fickle world economy. But it continues to expand and evolve. And, like so many coastal towns worldwide, this Gold Coast may soon be threatened by the tides. This book is essential for students, researchers, anyone interested in industry and urban development and those seeking to understand the city where they live, work, and play.

  • Author : Robert Drewe
  • Publisher : National Library of Australia
  • Release : 2015-11-01
  • ISBN : 0642278806
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book The Beach written by Robert Drewe and published by National Library of Australia. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Drewe, internationally acclaimed writer, writes here about the quintessential Australian experience. Drewe looks at the sunny, salty sexiness of the beach that first enticed the crusading Mr William Gocher into the ocean at Manly in 1903, defying authorities in his neck-to-knee bathing costume. We’ve come a long way from sunbathing in stockings and pantaloons to the unabashed display of sun-kissed bodies of all shapes and sizes at any beach in the country today. But the beach also has a dark side as a place of tragedy, violence and danger, a place where sharks attack prone surfers and prime ministers disappear. Drewe’s lyrical examination of Australian beach culture combines imagery from some of Australia’s most celebrated photographers with his personal anecdotes―a favourite boat, a capsicum-strewn beach, a summer holiday with teenagers and an unwelcome great white. This is a book for Australians dreaming of the beach―that is, those of us not there right now.

Book The Gold Coast Transformed

Download or read book The Gold Coast Transformed written by Tor Hundloe and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gold Coast is one of Australia's premier tourism destinations, a city cut out of coastal vegetation, including paperbark swamps, mangroves and rainforests of worldwide significance. The Gold Coast Transformed is a collection of integrated chapters identifying and assessing the environmental impacts of the building of Australia's sixth largest city. From the time of the first timber-getters through to the present, the book traces the cumulative impacts of humans on the now World Heritage-listed rainforest and surrounding ecosystems. The city's natural and engineered environments are both fascinating and vulnerable. The construction of massive high-rise apartment blocks, on what were frontal beach dunes, is one of the fundamental mistakes not to be repeated. The book illustrates how and why major environmentally destructive development took place and discusses the impacts of such development on the Gold Coast's beaches, wildlife, and terrestrial and marine environments, such as the destruction of riparian mangrove forest. The Gold Coast Transformed also shows the possibility of sustaining natural populations and reducing the city's ecological footprint. It will be of interest to ecologists, environmental scientists and managers, town planners, economists, policymakers and the general public.

Book Beaches of the Queensland Coast

Download or read book Beaches of the Queensland Coast written by Andrew D. Short and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beaches of the Queensland Coast provides the first description of all Queensland's ocean beaches between Cooktown and Coolangatta, including beaches on 18 islands and in several large bays. It is based on the results of the Australian Beach Safety and Management Program, a nationwide assessment of Australian beach systems. This book has two aims. First, to provide the public with general information on the origin and nature of Queensland's beaches, including the contribution of geology, oceanography, climate and biota to the beaches, and information on beach hazards and safety. Second, to provide a description of each beach, including its name(s), location, access, facilities, dimensions and the character of the beach and surf zone. The book comments on the suitability of the beach for bathing, surfing and fishing, with special emphasis on the natural hazards. Based on the physical hazards, all beaches are rated in terms of public safety and scaled from 1 (least hazardous) to 10 (most hazardous).
