The curse of the Arlanians, their intense sexual desirability and uncontrolled physical response, plays against her as Hel demands that she share her bed. But it is not Hel's mistreatment of her that distresses Raine the most. Rather, it is the curious deference with which the Goddess treats her that fills her with dread. The allies in the mortal realm know that Raine is held prisoner, and there is no word of Raine's love, the Ancient Dragon Talan. Still, that will not stop them from mounting a rescue. Planning moves forward until the final line of the prophecy reveals an unexpected translation, and all is thrown into disarray. Resolve falters as the ominous meaning becomes clear. The people of Arianthem must decide a course of action, for now they battle not merely a god, but fate itself. Even so, the mage Idonea, the elves Feyden and Elyara, the dwarf Lorifal, and the imperials Dagna and Bristol have sworn to rescue their comrade. And the young Tavinter leader, Skye, will not let them leave without her. This small band of adventurers, a handful who have actually been to the Gates of the Underworld, will save their friend, even if they have to go it alone.

Book An Illustrated Guide to Korean Mythology

Download or read book An Illustrated Guide to Korean Mythology written by Won-Oh Choi and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2008-04-10 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly engaging volume by one of Korea’s leading scholars of comparative mythology – the the first study of its kind in English – provides a valuable introduction to centuries-old beliefs, myths and folk tales relating to Cosmology and Flood, Birth and Agriculture, Messengers of the Underworld, Shamans, Disease, Good Fortune, Love and Family, Gods of Village Shrines, and Heroes. Containing thirty traditional stories, the book is fully illustrated throughout and contains a wide variety of Korean art, including rare shamanist paintings, as well as the work of some contemporary Korean artists. All the stories, based on Korean oral tradition, have been retold by the author according to their main plot and meaning because the original texts’ songs by shamans, containing many obsolete words and obscure idioms, are not easily understood today. The original title and source, including text notes, are provided at the end of each story. The author’s Introduction sets out the historical background and significance of the myths that appear here. He also provides full details of each of the Korean gods and their roles in mythology. While being a welcome addition to the literature on Korean culture for the non-specialist, An Illustrated Guide to Korean Mythology also provides an invaluable reference source for scholars and researchers in the fields of East Asian Mythology and Anthropology, as well as Korean History, Religion and Literature.

Kept in her mother’s shadow, and overlooked by the entirety of Olympus, her dream seems impossible… and now she’s doomed to wed a dull god of her mother’s choosing… Until she crosses paths with a handsome, dark warrior who rouses wildfire heat in her veins—a male whose immense power is unmistakable, and who matches the fearful tales whispered in Olympus—stories of a cruel, heartless king who rules his realm of death with an iron fist. When Hades abducts her and imprisons her in the depths of the Underworld, a dormant part of her awakens. Book The Myth of Sisyphus And Other Essays

Download or read book The Myth of Sisyphus And Other Essays written by Albert Camus and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential works of this century, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays is a crucial exposition of existentialist thought. Influenced by works such as Don Juan and the novels of Kafka, these essays begin with a meditation on suicide; the question of living or not living in a universe devoid of order or meaning. With lyric eloquence, Albert Camus brilliantly posits a way out of despair, reaffirming the value of personal existence, and the possibility of life lived with dignity and authenticity.

In Western literature, they are frequently embedded in stories of underworld explorations and celestial journeys—stories examining the nature of the universe, life on earth and the existence of the gods. The author analyzes tales of wonder in both ancient and medieval European literature. Other-worldly narratives appeared in literary contexts in the ancient world, including mythology, poetry and philosophical writings. In medieval times, they remained a popular form of literary expression. These stories are primarily religious in nature, describing fantastic worlds filled with miracles and supernatural beings.

Book Persephone Queen of the Dead

    Book Details:
  • Author : Isadora Marie
  • Publisher : Dog Ear Publishing
  • Release : 2011-10
  • ISBN : 1457507250
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Persephone Queen of the Dead written by Isadora Marie and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not the myth that has been passed down through the ages where the Greek God Hades abducts and rapes his niece Kore, the daughter of his sister, the Goddess Demeter; dragging her down to the Underworld to be his consort, thus changing her from the maiden Kore to Persephone, the Goddess of the Underworld. Persephone: Queen of the Dead tells the story of a young Goddess who falls in love and marries a God that she knows her mother does not approve of. It is the story of her life and what she had to sacrifice to be with the only man she loved. This story is told not only through the Goddess' own words, but also her mother, the Goddess Demeter's, for the lives of the two are entwined for eternity. The story begins with Kore as a young maiden, who happens to behold the God Hades as he emerges from the Underworld and falls instantly in love. Part 1 switches between Kore as she tells of her first love and her mother, Demeter as she expresses the betrayal of not only her daughter, but of the other gods as well. It is this betrayal that causes Demeter to withhold her Fertility from the world until most mortal life dies. A compromise is made and Kore, whose new name is Persephone, is forced to leave her husband for one-half of the year to be with her mother. During this time, Demeter allows the vegetation to once again sprout, but when Persephone returns to the Underworld the Goddess of Fertility once again withholds her gifts. Thus the seasons have been created. Continuing on the story explains the role Persephone assumes as Queen of the Dead, and tells several tales of mortals who risked everything by entering into the Underworld. Orpheus travels for weeks to beg the Goddess of Death to return his wife Eurydice to life; the Lapth prince Pirithous, with the help of his companion Theseus, tries to kidnap Persephone and make her his bride, for their foolishness they are turned into statues; four years later when the hero Hercules enters the Underworld as one of his Twelve Labors he is able to free his cousin Theseus Other tales within the story include that of Psyche and Eros, followed by Adonis who was raised by Persephone, and finally the story of how the new God Dionysus was created. The last part explains how with the beginning of Christianity the Old Gods were demoted into demons and without the daily offerings they became accustomed to, they began to fade. Only the strongest of the gods survived during this period. With the beginning of the new century hope was returned as the Old Religions were beginning to be revived. Isadora Marie is a Wiccan living in the metro Chicago area with her life mate and their canine and feline companions. Isadora grew up studying the Greek myths and as a child was fascinated with all the different Gods, Goddesses and heroes that populated them. When Isadora became a Wiccan it was these same Gods and Goddesses who became important not only in rituals, but in her life. She currently works in a history museum and her work around the artifacts of several different countries only increased her love for mythology. Though Isadora has worked with Gods and Goddess of several different cultures, it was those of Ancient Greece, from her childhood that she felt the closet connection to and after several decades of studying these myths she felt that it was time to tell a more modern version of one of her favorites, that of the Goddess Persephone. Since her background is in art and design, Isadora has been working on several projects to incorporate this element into her spirituality. A current project is developing a photographic Tarot deck, which included several of the Goddesses of Greece along with those of India and Egypt. All of her artistic projects are not only a work of love, but she hopes that they will inspire others to find the beauty in the old myths.
