Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales from Northland. THE GOD OF HIS FATHERS (excerpt) On every hand stretched the forest primeval, -the home of noisy comedy and silent tragedy. Here the struggle for survival continued to wage with all its ancient brutality. Briton and Russian were still to overlap in the Land of the Rainbow's End-and this was the very heart of it-nor had Yankee gold yet purchased its vast domain. The wolf-pack still clung to the flank of the cariboo-herd, singling out the weak and the big with calf, and pulling them down as remorselessly as were it a thousand, thousand generations into the past. The sparse aborigines still acknowledged the rule of their chiefs and medicine men, drove out bad spirits, burned their witches, fought their neighbors, and ate their enemies with a relish which spoke well of their bellies. But it was at the moment when the stone age was drawing to a close. Already, over unknown trails and chartless wildernesses, were the harbingers of the steel arriving, ...

Book excerpt: One of the pioneers of 20th century American literature, Jack London specialized in tales of adventure inspired by his own experiences. London was born in San Francisco in 1876. At 14, he quit school and became an "oyster pirate," robbing oyster beds to sell his booty to the bars and restaurants in Oakland. Later, he turned on his pirate associates and joined the local Fish Patrol, resulting in some hair-raising waterfront battles. Other youthful activities included sailing on a seal-hunting ship, traveling the United States as a railroad tramp, a jail term for vagrancy and a hazardous winter in the Klondike during the 1897 gold rush. Those experiences converted him to socialism, as he educated himself through prolific reading and began to write fiction. After a struggling apprenticeship, London hit literary paydirt by combining memories of his adventures with Darwinian and Spencerian evolutionary theory, the Nietzchean concept of the "superman" and a Kipling-influenced narrative style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I do enjoy short stories but I rarely choose to read a book of them all by the same author. This is a book that I bought after reading all the jack London classics like white fang(though to be honest this was the only one of his books that I have read that disappointed me)Martin Eden, Call of the wild and the sea wolf. Since it was short stories it lay on my book shelf for quite a long time until with little else to read I started reading it. There is not a bad story in this compendium, each is as good as the one prior and each are wonderful. They portray the harshness of life in a way few others can, the mysteries of evolution and nature explained. as well as oungrained genetic need to survive and prosper. The very nature of man and beast are in these tales. Very highly recommended.
