Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The go-ahead man must understand the purpose of a wife, and he must realize that marrying a woman does not make her a wife. The go-ahead man must also obey God and do as God have commanded him; this is why he needs a help meet. If the man is not doing what God has commanded him, he doesnt need a help meet: lets face it, men, we dont need help when we are not doing anything; he can do that all by himself. In a Christian marriage we must understand that God created the union of marriage and he knows what it takes to make it work. Every man has the ability to be a go-ahead man, all he needs is himself. What something is worth will be determined by what someone will give for it. Just like Christ gave himself for the church? The go-ahead man gives himself for the marriage. The man must understand that he is the head, not because he is smarter, stronger, or because he is a good provider: he is simply the head because thats what the Word of God said. The mans failure to function as the head is a lack of belief in Gods Word. As Christians we must realize who the real enemy is. One thing that the go-ahead man must get very skillful at, especially when relating to his wife, is recognizing when Satan comes into the conversation. Satans desire is to destroy the union of marriage. I believe the reason that destruction of the marriage is so high on Satans priority list is because Satan knows if he destroys the marriage then he can disrupt the church, and if the church is not in place, then he can win a community and finally a nation. But I thank God that Satans plan will not work because Jesus said in Mark 10:9, What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Book excerpt: The true story "Go Ahead" begins with the Dahlonega Square shootout. People, today, are still shaking their heads as to how it ends. Snooks Brackett's black Ford rammed the back of Harold's van and spun him around in front of the First Federal Savings and Loan building. It was Sunday so the lot was empty. It was getting dark, no one else was around and so Harold smiled as Snooks Brackett's car followed him into the parking lot and blocked the only way out. Everyone stayed in their cars. Snooks Brackett, Archie Berry, and Doug Walker were taking their time strapping up' for the battle. Harold Anderson placed his World War II sniper rifle on the seat next to him and opened a fresh box of ammunition. He took a long .30-06 caliber cartridge with its pointed metal jacket and paused to feel the weight of it in the palm of his hand and then slid it in the breech. When 6'11" 340 pound Doug Walker jumped out of Brackett's car, Harold drew in a deep breath and let it out slow. A bead of sweat ran down the side of his neck, He slid back the bolt to make sure the round was in the breech, gave a quick nod and slid the bolt back home. Harold squint his eyes and cocked his head slightly to one side as he saw everything moving in slow motion. He saw Archie Berry in the back seat aiming a pistol through the back side window. Snooks Brackett pulled out his nickel plated .38 and started to climb out from behind the driver's side. Doug Walker had already crossed the parking lot and was making his way around the side of Harold's car. Harold ran his hands down the pant legs of his fatigues to wipe the sweat from his palms, and then grabbing his rifle, he got out of the car and stepped up to face the moment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Best Seller A February IndieNext Pick Named A Most Anticipated Book of 2019 by Buzzfeed, Nylon, The A. V. Club, CBC Books, and The Rumpus. And a Winter's Most Anticipated Book by Vanity Fair and The Week Starred Reviews: Kirkus and Booklist "Warm, immediate and intensely personal."—New York Times How does one pay homage to A Tribe Called Quest? The seminal rap group brought jazz into the genre, resurrecting timeless rhythms to create masterpieces such as The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders. Seventeen years after their last album, they resurrected themselves with an intense, socially conscious record, We Got It from Here . . . Thank You 4 Your Service, which arrived when fans needed it most, in the aftermath of the 2016 election. Poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib digs into the group’s history and draws from his own experience to reflect on how its distinctive sound resonated among fans like himself. The result is as ambitious and genre-bending as the rap group itself. Abdurraqib traces the Tribe's creative career, from their early days as part of the Afrocentric rap collective known as the Native Tongues, through their first three classic albums, to their eventual breakup and long hiatus. Their work is placed in the context of the broader rap landscape of the 1990s, one upended by sampling laws that forced a reinvention in production methods, the East Coast–West Coast rivalry that threatened to destroy the genre, and some record labels’ shift from focusing on groups to individual MCs. Throughout the narrative Abdurraqib connects the music and cultural history to their street-level impact. Whether he’s remembering The Source magazine cover announcing the Tribe’s 1998 breakup or writing personal letters to the group after bandmate Phife Dawg’s death, Abdurraqib seeks the deeper truths of A Tribe Called Quest; truths that—like the low end, the bass—are not simply heard in the head, but felt in the chest.

But three years is a long time on newspapers and things have changed - readers are dwindling, budgets are tightening, and the Trib's once rigorous standards are slipping. Once the paper's star reporter, Conway now plays second fiddle to his former protégé, crime reporter Martin Moir. But when Moir goes AWOL as a big story breaks, Conway is dispatched to cover a gangland shooting. And when Moir's body turns up in a flooded quarry, Conway is drawn deeper into the city's criminal underworld as he looks for the truth about his colleague's death. Braving the hostility of gangsters, ambitious politicians and his own newspaper bosses, Conway discovers he still has what it takes to break a big story. But this is a story not everyone wants to hear as the city prepares to host the Commonwealth Games and the country gears up for a make-or-break referendum on independence. In this, the second book in the Conway Trilogy, McIlvanney explores the murky interface of crime and politics in the New Scotland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entering the 1978–1979 season, the Boston Bruins had been one of the best teams in the National Hockey League for more than a decade. Yet they could not shake the postseason jinx the Montreal Canadiens held over them—the Habs had ousted them in 13 consecutive playoff series going back to 1940s. The Bruins wanted one more shot at their nemeses, after coming up short in both the 1977 and 1978 Stanley Cup finals. They got their chance in the semifinal round. Led by the colorful but embattled coach Don Cherry, the underdog Bruins played seven heart-stopping games. Victory seemed within their grasp but was snatched away with an untimely penalty in the final minutes of game seven. The author looks back at the season from opening night at Boston Garden to the catastrophic conclusion at the Montreal Forum, with detailed accounts of the semifinal games and a post-mortem of the infamous bench penalty.
