Book The Glory of the Conquered The Story of a Great Love

Download or read book The Glory of the Conquered The Story of a Great Love written by Susan Glaspell and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapter 1: She had promised to marry a scientist! It was too overwhelming a thought to entertain standing there by the window. She sought the room's most comfortable chair and braced herself to the situation. If, one month before, a gossiping daughter of Fate had come to her with-"Shall I tell you something?-You are going to marry a man of science!"-she would have smiled serenely at Fate's amusing mistake and responded-"My good friend, it is quite true that great uncertainty attends this subject. So much to be expected is the unexpected, that I am quite willing to admit I may marry the hurdy-gurdy man who plays beneath my window. I know life well enough to appreciate that I may marry a pawnbroker or the Sultan of Turkey. I assert but one thing. I shall not marry a 'man of science.'" And now, not only had she promised to marry a man of science, but she had quite overlooked the fact of his being one! And the thing which stripped her of the last shred of consistency was that she was to marry, not the every-day, average "man of science," but one of the foremost scientists of all the world! The powers in charge of things matrimonial must be smiling a quiet little smile to-night.

Book excerpt: "The Glory of the Conquered: The Story of a Great Love" by Susan Glaspell at its simplest can be defined as a story about an artist, a scientist, and a journalist. However, it goes much further and looks at the depth of how humans are able to love. Despite its flaws, love is an incredibly powerful phenomenon that can, on many occasions outsmart the rational mind against all logic and drive people to do crazy things.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1909. As one of the founders of the Playwright's Theater, also known as the Provincetown Players, Susan Glaspell led a revolution in American theater. Between 1916 and 1922, the Provincetown Players produced new plays by young playwrights like her and Eugene O'Neill. Glaspell's subject matter includes regionalism (Iowa), sexual tensions between women and men, and characters in search of life's meaning. In 1931 she won the Pulitzer Prize for Alison's House, a play based loosely on the life and family of Emily Dickinson. The novel begins: She had promised to marry a scientist! It was too overwhelming a thought to entertain standing there by the window. She sought the room's most comfortable chair and braced herself to the situation.

Book On Susan Glaspell s Trifles and A Jury of Her Peers

Download or read book On Susan Glaspell s Trifles and A Jury of Her Peers written by Martha C. Carpentier and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a wharf in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where Greenwich Village bohemians gathered in the summer of 1916, Susan Glaspell was inspired by a sensational murder trial to write Trifles, a play about two women who hide a Midwestern farm wife's motive for murdering her abusive husband. Following successful productions of the play, Glaspell became the "mother of American drama." Her short story version of Trifles, "A Jury of Her Peers," reached an unprecedented one million readers in 1917. The play and the story have since been taught in classrooms across America and Trifles is regularly revived on stages around the world. This collection of fresh essays celebrates the centennial of Trifles and "A Jury of Her Peers," with departures from established Glaspell scholarship. Interviews with theater people are included along with two original works inspired by Glaspell's iconic writings.
