Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Observational Tests of Cosmological Inflation

Download or read book Observational Tests of Cosmological Inflation written by T. Shanks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the proceedings from the NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop entitled "Observational Tests of Inflation" held at the University of Durham, England on the 10th-14th December, 1990. In recent years, the cosmological inflation model has drawn together the worlds of particle physics, theoretical cosmology and observational astronomy. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts in all of these fields to discuss the current status of the inflation theory and its observational predictions. The simplest inflation model makes clear predictions which are testable by astronomical observation. Foremost is the prediction that the cosmological density parameter, no, should have a value negligibly different from the critical, Einstein-de Sitter value of 00=1. The other main prediction is that the spectrum of primordial density fluctuations should be Gaussian and take the Harrison-Zeldovich form. The prediction that n =l, in patticular, leads to several important consequences o for cosmology. Firstly, there is the apparent contradiction with the limits on baryon density from Big Bang nucleosynthesis which has led to the common conjecture that weakly interacting particles rather than baryons may form the dominant mass constituent of the Universe. Secondly, with n =l, the age of the Universe is uncomfortably short if o the Hubble constant and the ages of the oldest star clusters lie within their currently believed limits.

Book The Globular Cluster Kinematics and Dark Matter Content of NGC 4649

Download or read book The Globular Cluster Kinematics and Dark Matter Content of NGC 4649 written by Ainsley Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The globular cluster system (GCS) of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 has been examined using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS); spectra for 156 candidate globular clusters (GCs) were obtained, extending to a galactocentric radius of 42 kpc. The system was found to have an even 78 GC candidates per population, using a colour of g-i = 0.92 (Faifer et al. 2011) to split the system into sub-populations. The populations refer to their metalicity; a g-i0.92 is considered metal-poor (MP), and a g-i0.92 is metal-rich (MR). Line-of-sight-velocity measurements and subsequent modelling, were used to measure the full GCS rotational velocity as 59+/-28 km/s, with a position angle of 218+/-28 degrees. The MR population was found to have rotational velocity of 81+/-42 km/s with a position angle of 221+/-29 degrees, while the MP population measures a rotational velocity of 30+/-36 km/s with a position angle of 202+/-73 degrees. The average velocity dispersion for the full GCS was calculated at 247+/-61 km/s, the MR population 266+/-94 km/s, and the MP population, 221+/-76 km/s. These findings are consistent (within uncertainties) with previous studies by Hwang et al.(2008), and Bridges et al. (2006). The velocity dispersion profile for all populations is constant with increasing radius, suggesting the presence of a dark matter (DM) halo. A tracer mass estimator was used to measure the mass at 42 kpc as (2.01+/-0.05)X10^{12} solar masses, for an isothermal potential, and (1.21+/-0.05)X10^{12} solar masses if the tracers followed the DM profile. Finally, it was estimated that M/L_{B}=22 - 44, consistent with the presence of considerable amounts of DM for a luminous galaxy.

Book The Photometric Properties of Extragalactic Globular Cluster Systems

Download or read book The Photometric Properties of Extragalactic Globular Cluster Systems written by Zachary Grove Jennings and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globular Clusters (GCs) are powerful tools for understanding the formation of galaxies. GCs are located in the halos of galaxies and, due to their age and density, have borne witness to the major formation events of a galaxy's lifetime. One may study these objects using a wide array of techniques and datasets, including wide-field ground-based imaging, deep space-based imaging, and spectroscopy. All approaches involve tradeoffs, and in this work we consider a variety of ways to study GC systems in imaging data. We examine a wide-field HST/ACS mosaic of the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 3115, selecting a high-quality GC sample using the superior resolution of the ACS data. We find strong color bimodality in the GC system of NGC 3115 and examine a number of trends in the properties of the GC system. Next, we consider the situation where one is limited to ground-based imaging, where contaminants to the GC population are a major concern. We detail a novel statistical methodology in which we treat the GC population and the contaminant population as a mixture model, and evaluate the model in a Bayesian context. We demonstrate the performance of the model on mock data, and note some areas where current analysis of GC systems may be missing information using traditional selection techniques. We also apply this Bayesian methodology to a subset of SLUGGS survey galaxies with high-quality photometry from either the MegaCam instrument on the Canada France-Hawaii Telescope or the SuprimeCam instrument on the Subaru Telescope. In most cases, the mixture model recovers the GC system well, often finding the traditional bimodality and providing well-calibrated statistical uncertainties for the global parameters of the GC system. Finally, we examine the object NGC 3628 UCD1, a star cluster slightly more massive than the largest GCs. We identify that UCD1 is located in a stellar stream around the galaxy NGC 3628, and therefore is in the process of being accreted. We characterize UCD1 both in wide-field SuprimeCam imaging and in Keck/ESI spectroscopy, and identify a number of interesting parallels between UCD1 and omegaCen, the largest Milky Way GC.
