Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new volume, Karl Heinz Marquardt presents the results of some twenty years of research into schooners and re-evaluates the longstanding perceptions about their origins and history. In doing so he answers the essential questions of genesis and, through his comprehensive exploration of the construction and fitting of a significant range of European, American and Australian schooner vessels, provides the first complete history of the development of the schooner. In the first part of the book Marquardt puts forward for the very first time a new explanation, based on primary source material, of the origins of the schooner, tracing the term and its practical application back to Peregrine Osborne, the Marquis of Carmarthen in England in 1697. The evolution of the rig is then traced through its various guises as its application spread through Europe and the United States in the course of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In unprecedented detail the author isolates and examines the main types of schooner to play important roles in the schooner story and each type is illustrated by the explanation of a particular vessel, complete with full specifications, contemporary illustrations or model photographs and a full set of detailed line drawings. The vessels thus covered are the armed schooner and privateer Berbice, and coast-guard vessel Elgen, and gunboat Axel Thorsen and the merchant schooners The Schooner for Port Jackson and Enterprize. The second part of the volume details the construction and fitting, the masting and rigging (both standing and running) as well as the armament and furniture of both merchant and naval schooners. Each of these sections is fully illustrated with detailed plates drawn by the author based on original research. Four tabulated appendices detail contemporary timber, mast and spar dimensions together with measurements for standing and running rigging, anchors, oars and boats. With a wealth of new research and an exciting array of original plans and drawings, The Global Schooner is set to become the schooner bible for the maritime historian, the modeller and the enthusiast alike.

Download or read book Westward Bound in the Schooner Yankee written by Irving Johnson and published by W. W. Norton. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To trace the course of the Yankee from Gloucester harbor around the world is to re-draft in no small degree a map of strange and remote parts of the globe. Among her ports of call was Floreana in the Galapagos, then the home of the tragic Baroness and her companions. Then 3000 miles of open sea brought the Yankee to tiny Pitcairn, famous from the saga of the Bounty. And in succession Tahiti, Cook Islands, the Fiji and Solomon Islands, the New Hebrides, North Borneo, and the China Sea. Followed the far East, Siam, Singapore, the East Indies and South Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, and finally, after eighteen months across the Atlantic to reach again her home port in Gloucester. On this voyage Captain Johnson and his interesting ship's company made many inland explorations among strange lands and native peoples. New islands were charted and places visited hitherto unknown to white men's experiences. Their discovery of one of the highest waterfalls in the world, which they promptly named "Yankee Falls," is an unusual tale among modern seafaring chronicles. They day by day story of the Yankee's voyage and the uncommon experiences of her people is written in the good deep sea tradition--a simple terse style and great economy of expression. All in all the reader will find here a grand tale of the sea.

Book A Boston Schooner in the Royal Navy 1768 1772

Download or read book A Boston Schooner in the Royal Navy 1768 1772 written by Phillip Reid and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uses rare surviving records, including fully intact logbooks, to situate the customs-enforcement interceptor Sultana within the wider picture of the British Atlantic in this crucial period. The small Boston-built schooner Sultana served as a customs-enforcement interceptor on the North American eastern seaboard in the period leading up to the American Declaration of Independence, when British taxation of American trade was a hugely contentious issue. As a typical workaday British American merchant ship taken into naval service, Sultana offers a rare opportunity to understand a technology of paramount importance to this world, where records for merchant ships are scarce, but where in this case a wealth of information, from plan drawings to the fully-intact logbooks, has survived. The book provides a detailed narrative of the ship's activities, and reveals the nature of life on board and the day to day business of operating a small sailing ship. It explores the technology of the ship and her sailing qualities as revealed by the ship's logs and also by the performance of a modern replica. In addition, the book situates Sultana's role within the wider picture of the British Atlantic in this crucial period. It is thereby both naval microhistory and also Atlantic history for all scholars interested in the formation and development of the British Atlantic world.
