Book excerpt: This report analyzes women’s participation in international patent applications between 1999 and 2020 and finds that women are involved in only 23% of all applications, representing 13% of all inventors listed. Women’s participation in patenting varies across regions, sectors, and industries, with higher representation in biotechnology, food chemistry, and pharmaceuticals, and lower in mechanical engineering. Women inventors are more prevalent in academia than in the private sector, and typically work in mostly-male teams or alone. Achieving gender parity will require significant effort, with an estimated target year of 2061 based on current trends.

Book excerpt: Even though the number of working women has steadily increased over the last few years, women are still significantly under-represented in STEM activities (i.e. mathematics, informatics, science and technology). In order to eliminate this under-representation, numerous education policies and corporate initiatives, particularly in the recent past, have been aimed at increasing women's enthusiasm for STEM activities and professions. According to the latest surveys, however, it is clear that these efforts have not yet led to the desired success. Compared to their male counterparts, women continue to do fewer STEM activities. One possible reason for this is that relatively little is yet known about the concrete impact of the above education policies on working with innovation and technology: What are the gender differences between women and men? Is it enough to recognize these differences, or should these differences ideally not only be recognized, but also treated appropriately or even encouraged? This anthology deals with current topics in technology and innovation management against the background of these and other gender-relevant aspects. Empirical analyses and experiments in collaboration with companies from various sectors provide a sound scientific basis on which new results and findings are presented: How do women and men deal with creativity and competition? How are technologies applied and how can differences in access to technology be deduced? Answers to these and other questions help decision-makers in politics and business to proactively use the differences between women and men to motivate women to work in the STEM field and to strengthen them by acknowledging existing differences.

The main goal of the project was to investigate the gender gap in STEM disciplines from different angles, globally and across disciplines. We have performed (i) a global survey of scientists with more than 32,000 responses; (ii) an investigation of the effect of gender in millions of scientific publications; and (iii) the compilation of best-practice initiatives that address the gender gap in Mathematical, Computing, and Natural Sciences at various levels. We conclude that the gender gap is very real in science and mathematics. We present methodologies, insights, and tools that have been developed throughout the project, as well as a set of recommendations for different audiences: instructors and parents; educational institutions; scientific unions and other organizations responsible for science policy.

Goal 5 of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aims to 'achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.' While the connections between IP and gender are not widely acknowledged, this chapter identifies the IP system's complicity in sustaining and compounding gender inequality and considers the possibility that changes to the IP system could bring about a more equal society. Part 1 begins by acknowledging some scepticism around the transformative promise of the SDGs and the potential for IP law to meaningfully advance them. Part 2 explores the relationship between gender inequality and patent law, describing and critically reflecting on the significance of the patent gender-gap. Part 3 then turns to consider copyright law and the growing evidence of its gendered implications. In both respects, the discussion critiques the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for its complacent certainty that an expansive international IP system will support innovation and creativity, which will in turn advance sustainable development and gender equality. The chapter concludes by bringing a relational feminist argument to bear to critique the neoliberal assumptions that pervade the SDGs and WIPO's response to them.
