It can, though, bring immense, and sometimes fatal, challenges to large and small organizations alike by altering the perception that any one person, or groups of persons, places on the value of an organization. Do you understand the change cycle, both visible effects and hard to see causes? Better yet, do you understand how to apply change management thinking to mitigate its negative effects and leverage its positive ones? Taking the reader through the five stages of a change cycle, including Start-up, Growth, Balance, Chaos, and Decline, the authors dissect the causes and effects, as well as what needs to be done to re-invent the organization. The knowledge in this book can be applied to private enterprise, government agencies, not-for-profits, and military organizations. It can even be applied to the reader's own professional growth! This outstanding book, written by two of the best internationally known organizational writers and advisors, breaks it all down for you, giving you and your organization the ability to succeed today, and the power to predict tomorrow!

Book Reclaiming Human Rights in a Changing World Order

Download or read book Reclaiming Human Rights in a Changing World Order written by Christopher Sabatini and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-10-07 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights — and the international institutions that strive to protect them — are under increasing attack from powerful actors on the global stage, from recent political trends even within established democracies and from new technologies. Together, these threats have undermined what had been a fragile international consensus as recently as two decades ago about the importance of concerted international action to protect human rights and punish those who abuse them. China, Russia, and other nondemocratic regimes have become increasingly bold in acting as if agreed-upon international human rights standards no longer exist, or at least do not apply to them. More broadly, domestic political movements based on nationalism, religion, and populism are challenging human rights norms on nearly every continent. And new technologies — including autonomous weapons systems and relentless digital surveillance — have given national leaders new ways to control or even abuse their citizens with impunity. This book examines these new challenges to international and regional human rights in Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. It is the result of a year of workshops with human rights activists and young leaders from around the world, with chapters written by a diverse group of leading scholars. Beyond describing the challenges to human rights, the book offers targeted, practical recommendations for national and multilateral policymakers, activists, and scholars for concrete actions to protect human rights as well as improve public understanding of why doing so is essential. Reclaiming Human Rights in a Changing World Order will interest scholars of international relations and human rights law, domestic and international activists involved in human rights — indeed, anyone wanting to understand the implications for the liberal international order of the new geopolitical competition, modern technology, and political and social movements.

Book The Mandates of the Church

Download or read book The Mandates of the Church written by Rich Ayo Adekoya and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thought-provoking and momentous book, the author poses the questions, what is the role of the church in our society and should there be any relationship between the state and the church for the development of the society and what could be the effect of such collaboration if there is any? In asking on what bases is the church getting involved with the society, he explores both the Biblical foundations and three major theories that have emerged about societies and social behaviour. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between religion and social change to the case of the church in Lagos, Nigeria as an agent of social and political change in society. Using a thematic structure, Richard Adekoya illustrates different roles the church can play in society, especially in a democratic milieu, for example humanity services, educational development, spiritual and moral development and social and ethical development. He examines the various contributions of the churches in Nigeria right from the missionaries era to the contemporary dispensation. The book basically proved that the church mandate is not limited to its evangelical obligations. Its involvement in many aspects of peoples lives in society, particularly the social and political aspects, is part of its cultural mandate. This is a challenging book, rich in example and wide-ranging in scope: key ideas that so often appear impossible for the church to practice - employment generation, political leadership, public enlightenment, tackling corruption in the polity here practically seem possible. Richard Adekoyas excellent work, tackles this set of issues in a very thorough way. By looking at the issues through the lens of the Bible, church history and sociological analysis he makes a powerful theological case for the involvement of the church in the societies in which it finds itself called to give a witness. Understandably and helpfully there is a particular emphasis on Nigeria, a nation which he knows well. By choosing Nigeria as a kind of case history the broader, general case is given a particular and penetrating illustration that strengthens his wider argument. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destruction of the World Trade Center complex on 9/11 set in motion a chain of events that fundamentally transformed both the United States and the wider world. War has raged in the Middle East for a decade and a half, and Americans have become accustomed to surveillance, enhanced security, and periodic terrorist attacks. But the symbolic locus of the post-9/11 world has always been "Ground Zero"--the sixteen acres in Manhattan's financial district where the twin towers collapsed. While idealism dominated in the initial rebuilding phase, interest-group trench warfare soon ensued. Myriad battles involving all of the interests with a stake in that space-real estate interests, victims' families, politicians, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the federal government, community groups, architectural firms, and a panoply of ambitious entrepreneurs grasping for pieces of the pie-raged for over a decade, and nearly fifteen years later there are still loose ends that need resolution. In Power at Ground Zero, Lynne Sagalyn offers the definitive account of one of the greatest reconstruction projects in modern world history. Sagalyn is America's most eminent scholar of major urban reconstruction projects, and this is the culmination of over a decade of research. Both epic in scope and granular in detail, this is at base a classic New York story. Sagalyn has an extraordinary command over all of the actors and moving parts involved in the drama: the long parade of New York and New Jersey governors involved in the project, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, various Port Authority leaders, the ubiquitous real estate magnate Larry Silverstein, and architectural superstars like Santiago Calatrava and Daniel Libeskind. As she shows, political competition at the local, state, regional, and federal level along with vast sums of money drove every aspect of the planning process. But the reconstruction project was always about more than complex real estate deals and jockeying among local politicians. The symbolism of the reconstruction extended far beyond New York and was freighted with the twin tasks of symbolizing American resilience and projecting American power. As a result, every aspect was contested. As Sagalyn points out, while modern city building is often dismissed as cold-hearted and detached from meaning, the opposite was true at Ground Zero. Virtually every action was infused with symbolic significance and needed to be debated. The emotional dimension of 9/11 made this large-scale rebuilding effort unique; it supercharged the complexity of the rebuilding process with both sanctity and a truly unique politics. Covering all of this and more, Power at Ground Zero is sure to stand as the most important book ever written on the aftermath of arguably the most significant isolated event in the post-Cold War era.

Book Taxation History Theory Law and Administration

Download or read book Taxation History Theory Law and Administration written by Parthasarathi Shome and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tax practitioners are unfamiliar with tax theory. Tax economists remain unfamiliar with tax law and tax administration. Most textbooks relate mainly to the US, UK or European experiences. Students in emerging economies remain unfamiliar with their own taxation history. This textbook fills those gaps. It covers the concept of taxes in regards to their rationale, principles, design, and common errors. It addresses distortions in consumer choices and production decisions caused by tax and redressals. The main principles of taxation—efficiency, equity, stabilization, revenue productivity, administrative feasibility, international neutrality—are presented and discussed. The efficiency principle requires the minimisation of distortions in the market caused by tax. Equity in taxation is another principle that is maintained through progressivity in the tax structure. Similarly, other principles have their own ramifications that are also addressed. A country’s constitutional specification of tax assignment to different levels of government—central, state, municipal—are elaborated. The UK is more centralised than the US and India. India has amended its constitution to introduce a goods and services tax (GST) covering both central and state governments. Drafting of tax law is crucial for clarity and this aspect is addressed. Furthermore, the author illustrates different types of taxes such as individual income tax, corporate income tax, wealth tax, retail sales/value added/goods and services tax, selective excises, property tax, minimum taxes such as the minimum alternate tax (MAT), cash-flow tax, financial transactions tax, fringe benefits tax, customs duties and export taxes, environment tax and global carbon tax, and user charges. An emerging concern regarding the inadequacy of international taxation of multinational corporations is covered in some detail. Structural aspects of tax administration are given particular attention.
