Download or read book The Glittering Illusion written by Sheldon Vanauken and published by Gateway Editions. This book was released on 1989 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mr. Sheldon Vanauken has shown a singular consistency in pursuing an idea that was originally the subject of his graduate research at Oxford University to its presentation in this volume. Mr. Vanauken believes -- and there is a good deal of evidence to support him -- that English sympathies during the American Civil War were largely on the Southern side of the conflict. British intervention would have secured a Southern victory which might have suited British commercial interests and British conceptions of the balance of power and put an end to American hopes of annexing Canada. Support for the South would have conformed to the general British disposition to give credence to struggles for national self-determination. Why then, did Britain not intervene as at one moment she seemed on the point of doing? Mr. Sheldon Vanauken dismisses the view that British anti-slavery sentiment and hence popular support for the Northern cause was the root of the matter and plumps for what he calls the 'glittering illusion' namely the belief that Southern military skills, and in particular the generalship of Robert E. Lee, were thought to make a Southern defeat unthinkable, so that the South could win its independence without the foreign assistance that the American colonies had enjoyed in winning their independence from the British Empire in the war of the American Revolution. It is an interesting idea and one that challenges many accepted beliefs. Interesting also are Mr. Vanauken's subsequent speculations on what would have happened if the South had actually won and as he believes would have followed had freed its slaves of its own violation"--Preliminary page.

Download or read book Minding the South written by and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over three decades John Shelton Reed has been "minding" the South. He is the author or editor of thirteen books about the region. Despite his disclaimer concerning the formal study of Southern history, Reed has read widely and in depth about the South. His primary focus is upon Southerners' present-day culture, but he knows that one must approach the South historically in order to understand the place and its people. Why is the South so different from the rest of America? Rupert Vance, Reed's predecessor in sociology at Chapel Hill, once observed that the existence of the South is a triumph of history over geography and economics. The South has resisted being assimilated by the larger United States and has kept a personality that is distinctly its own. That is why Reed celebrates the South. The chapters in this book cover everything from great thinkers about the South--Eugene D. Genovese, C. Vann Woodward, M. E. Bradford--to the uniqueness of a region that was once a hotbed of racism, but has recently attracted hundreds of thousands of black people transplanted from the North. There are also chapters about Southerners who have devoted their talents to politics, soft drinks, rock and roll, and jewelry design. Reed writes with wit and Southern charm, never afraid to speak his mind, even when it comes to taking his beloved South to task. While readers may not share all his opinions, most will agree that John Shelton Reed is one of the best "South watchers" there is.
Download or read book The Union the Confederacy and the Atlantic Rim written by Robert E. May and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War is usually regarded as a purely domestic struggle. The essays in The Union, the Confederacy, and the Atlantic Rim demonstrate that the conflict was an international event that affected, and was affected by, the policies of many countries. These four prize-winning historians reconsider why the Confederacy never received the foreign aid that it counted on and trace the war's impact upon European and Latin nations and dependencies. They provide fresh perspectives regarding Britain's refusal to recognize the Confederacy, the role abroad of pro-Union African American lecturers, French emperor Napoleon III's intervention in Mexico, and the Civil War's meaning to peoples all over the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bishop Charles P. McIlvaine was an important figure in nineteenth century America. As one of the leading evangelicals in the Protestant Episcopal Church, the Ohioan became the pivotal figure in the evangelical Episcopal-Anglican community. Famed as a preacher and speaker, his books and pamphlets were read by trans-Atlantic audience. His endeavors in the United Kingdom resulted in honorary degrees from Cambridge University and Oxford University. Aware of his reputation in England, the Lincoln Administration sent him to Britain in 1861. Working with Thurlow Weed, he sought to swing middle and upper class opinion into a pro-federal position. After six months abroad, his persuasive leadership induced the Federal Episcopal Convention to support the union war effort, which included Lincoln's emancipation policy. In this first biography of McIlvaine, Smith mined British and American sources never before utilized. The book reveals the bishop's complex persona. a rich and, at times, sorrowful family saga unfolds. As a reformer, he became an anti-slave advocate. This groundbreaking account develops the struggles encountered and the significance of the informal mission for federal policies. The political overtones in his friendship with the Prince of Wales are examined. Comfortable in any secular or military environment, McIlvaine's other wartime activities enabled him to report to Lincoln when necessary. In later years, he undertook length sojourns in England as he was busy with English and European religious questions. Dying in Italy, he was honored in Britain and America.

But nothing can ever come of a relationship between persons of such very different backgrounds…can it? “John Pickett…[is]…a little young, but wholly delectable.” —All About Romance IN MILADY’S CHAMBER Estranged from her aristocratic husband through her failure to produce an heir, Lady Fieldhurst resolves to repay his neglect by taking a lover. Fate intervenes when she and her paramour enter her bedchamber and find Lord Fieldhurst on the floor—with her nail scissors protruding from his neck. Idealistic young Bow Street Runner John Pickett has spent most of his brief career chasing petty thieves. Nothing has prepared him for low dealings in high society…or for the beautiful young widow who is the chief suspect. A DEAD BORE Eager to escape the scandal of her husband's death, Lady Fieldhurst accepts an invitation to a house party. When a dinner party ends with the death of the vicar, she suspects murder and sends for John Pickett. He obliges by presenting himself as her footman, complete with livery and powdered hair. But he soon has his white-gloved hands full sifting through old secrets, uncovering hidden passions, and dealing with a demanding housekeeper. Then there is the problem of Lady Fieldhurst, at once an able assistant and an all-too-pleasant distraction. FAMILY PLOT John Pickett accompanies his magistrate to Scotland to investigate a woman found unconscious on the beach—a woman who bears a striking resemblance to the local laird’s daughter, missing and presumed dead for the last fifteen years. Pickett is surprised and gratified to discover that the woman was found by Lady Fieldhurst and her young nephews—and that she has registered at the seaside inn as Mrs. Julia Pickett. When old Angus Kirkbride dies only hours after announcing his intention of changing his will, “Mr. and Mrs. Pickett” must discover the truth about a lethal family reunion. DINNER MOST DEADLY When Lady Fieldhurst returns from Scotland blue-deviled, her friend Lady Dunnington plans a select dinner from whose guests she may choose a lover. But the evening ends in disaster when one of the men is shot. When Bow Street Runner John Pickett arrives to investigate, he is faced with the task of informing Lady Fieldhurst that their recent masquerade as man and wife has resulted in a legal marriage. Beset by distractions—including the humiliating annulment procedure and the flattering attentions of a pretty housemaid—Pickett must find the killer of a man everyone wanted dead. TOO HOT TO HANDEL When Drury Lane Theatre is plagued with jewel thefts, John Pickett goes incognito as a “gentleman” to investigate. His magistrate suggests an aristocratic female companion might prevent him from making any glaring faux pas, but the only lady Pickett knows is Julia, Lady Fieldhurst—to whom he is accidentally married, and with whom he is hopelessly in love. Then the theatre catches fire, and the pair must escape their box via a makeshift rope. When Pickett is struck in the head and left unconscious, Julia is determined to nurse him back to health and to discover his attacker. But can she walk away afterward?

Download or read book Anthems and Minstrel Shows written by Brian Christopher Thompson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calixa Lavallée, the composer of “O Canada,” was the first Canadian-born musician to achieve an international reputation. While primarily remembered for the national anthem, Lavallée and his work extended well beyond Canada, and he played a multitude of roles in North American music as a composer, conductor, administrator, instrumentalist, educator, and critic. In Anthems and Minstrel Shows, Brian Thompson analyzes Lavallée’s music, letters, and published writings, as well as newspapers and music magazines of the time, to provide a detailed account of musical life in nineteenth-century North America and the relationship between music and nation. Leaving Quebec at age sixteen, Lavallée travelled widely for a decade as musical director of a minstrel troupe, and spent a year as a bandsman in the Union Army. Later, as a performer and conductor, he built a repertoire that prepared audiences for the intellectually challenging music of European composers and new music by his US contemporaries. His own music extended from national songs to comic operas, and instrumental music, as he shifted between the worlds of classical and popular music. Previously portrayed as a humble French Canadian forced into exile by ignorance and injustice, Lavallée emerges here as ambitious, radical, bohemian, and fully engaged with the musical, social, and political currents of his time. While nationalism and nation-building are central to this story, Anthems and Minstrel Shows asks to which nation – or nations – Lavallée and “O Canada” really belong.
