Divisions of the Glassware Department There are usually three general divisions of the Glassware Department: 1. Tableware 2. Toilet sets 3. Decorative or art glass Sometimes a division is made between the domestic and the imported glass; but the American glass is so excellent in quality that there is no need for such a distinction. Glass is also divided according to its composition, into: Flint, lead, or crystal glass Lime or lime-crystal glass Common or bottle-glass Manufacturers are known as flint or lime manufacturers, according to the kind of glass they produce. Cut glass is made of lead or flint glass and is sometimes called cut rock crystal; pressed or molded glass is lime-crystal; and the cheaper grades may be bottleglass. Glass is also referred to commercially as American, Belgian, Bohemian, Swedish, French, or English, indicating the country in which it was made; and in other cases it may be referred to by the name of the manufacturer. Characteristics of Glass Glass is one of the most valuable of all manufactured materials. It has the three most essential qualities: Utility Durability Beauty Utility The usefulness of glass is primarily due to its great adaptability. As a container of food it is almost perfect, as it can be attacked by only one acid and that acid is not found in food. It is, however, slightly affected by strong alkalies. Because of its smooth surface it can be kept clean and will not retain odors; and thus it makes the best possible container for liquids, medicines, and nearly all chemicals.
