Download or read book The Glassblowers of Woodbury New Jersey 1881 written by Jeffrey Robert Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the history of over two dozen practical glass men, exploring the lives of those bottle blowers whose specific trade was the blowing of green glass bottles. Before bottle making became a mechanized process, glassblowing was key to supplying containers and other objects to a range of industries. Twenty-eight practitioners of the art came together in 1881 in Woodbury, New Jersey, and founded the Woodbury Glass Works. Many of the glassblowers shared not only a humble calling, but also a common ancestry and strong religious beliefs. Most of them were influenced by a trio of men associated with Dickinson College, a Methodist school of higher learning in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. That institution was a common thread for three influential men of South Jersey who impacted the men of Woodbury: Benjamin Crispin Lippincott, George Gill Green, and William H. Bodine. The nucleus of the men of the Woodbury movement in 1881 descended from members of the glassblowing Stanger clan that settled in Maurice River Township in South Jersey at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Not all the twenty-eight glassblowers covered on the pages within remained in Woodbury, but many of these upstanding citizens had profound influences on the communities in which they settled. The blowers and their families, connected to each other through their profession and heritage, shared an incredible kinship observed throughout the entire South Jersey area and beyond.Their profession required skill, keen instincts, attention to detail, a patient temperament, and a robust set of lungs. Glassblowing-referred to as one of the five "Black Arts" around the turn of the last century in Brooklyn, New York-is the framework for this history.
