Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people today can claim a living memory of Florida's frontier Everglades. Glen Simmons, who has hunted alligators, camped on hammock-covered islands, and poled his skiff through the mangrove swamps of the glades since the 1920s, is one who can. Together with Laura Ogden, he tells the story of backcountry life in the southern Everglades from his youth until the establishment of the Everglades National Park in 1947. During the economic bust of the late ‘20s, when many natives turned to the land to survive, Simmons began accompanying older local men into Everglades backcountry, the inhospitable prairie of soft muck and mosquitoes, of outlaws and moonshiners, that rings the southern part of the state. As Simmons recalls life in this community with humor and nostalgia, he also documents the forgotten lifestyles of south Florida gladesmen. By necessity, they understood the natural features of the Everglades ecosystem. They observed the seasonal fluctuations of wildlife, fire, and water levels. Their knowledge of the mostly unmapped labyrinth of grassy water enabled them to serve as guides for visiting naturalists and scientists. Simmons reconstructs this world, providing not only fascinating stories of individual personalities, places, and events, but an account that is accurate, both scientifically and historically, of one of the least known and longest surviving portions of the American frontier.

Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize–winning and New York Times bestselling author—and actual Florida Man—Dave Barry returns with a “hilariously funny” (Steve Martin) caper full of oddballs and more twists and turns than a snake slithering away from a gator. Jesse Braddock is trapped in a tiny cabin deep in the Everglades with her infant daughter and her ex-boyfriend, a wannabe reality TV star who turned out to be a lot prettier on the outside than on the inside. Broke and desperate for a way out, Jesse stumbles across a long-lost treasure, which could solve all her problems—if she can figure out how to keep it. The problem is some very bad men are also looking for the treasure, and they know Jesse has it. Meanwhile, Ken Bortle of Bortle Brothers Bait and Beer has hatched a scheme to lure tourists to his failing store by making viral videos of the “Everglades Melon Monster.” The Monster is, in fact, an unemployed alcoholic newspaperman named Phil wearing a Dora the Explorer costume head. Incredibly, this plan actually works, inspiring a horde of TikTokers to swarm into the swamp in search of the Monster at the same time villains are on the hunt for Jesse’s treasure. Amid this mayhem, a presidential hopeful arrives in the Everglades to start his campaign. Needless to say, it does not go as planned. In fact, nothing in this story goes as planned. This is, after all, Florida.

Book Death of a Glades Man A Florida Keys Mystery

Download or read book Death of a Glades Man A Florida Keys Mystery written by Carl Bock and published by Absolutely Amazing eBooks. This book was released on 2023-02-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sam Sawyer may become my favorite crime fighter. I can’t wait for the next book in this new Florida Keys mystery series …” —Maryjane Elizabeth Jones, Heat Until Boiling They called Arthur Broom “The Glades Man,” not because he lived way out there in the river of grass, but because he was spending all his money trying to save it. And as one of the richest men in Florida there was much he could do to beat back the onslaughts of agriculture and development that were threatening the greatest wetland in North America. But that sort of thing made some powerful enemies. When he ended up dead in the water, Detective Stella Reynard had good reason to suspect it was more than a simple drowning. She recruited fishing guide and part-time sleuth Sam Sawyer to help her with the case, along with Sam’s wife Katie, a full-time forensic botanist. The challenge they faced was not a lack of suspects but too many, such was the list of people whose wealth and power Art Broom had threatened. Carl and Jane Bock are retired Professors of Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Carl received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of California at Berkeley, while Jane holds three degrees in Botany, a B.A. from Duke, an M.A. from the University of Indiana, and a Ph.D. from Berkeley. Carl is an ornithologist and conservation biologist. Jane is a plant ecologist and an internationally recognized expert in the use of plant evidence in criminal investigations. Now largely retired from academic life, the Bocks have turned their creative efforts toward fiction writing, and are co-authors of two ongoing series, the Arizona Borderlands Mysteries and the Florida Keys Mysteries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As law enforcement officer and game manager for the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, Lt. Tom Shirley was the law in one of the last true frontiers in the nation--the Florida Everglades. In Everglades Patrol, Shirley shares the stories from his beat--an ecosystem larger than the state of Rhode Island. His vivid narrative includes dangerous tales of hunting down rogue gladesmen and gators and airboat chases through the wetlands in search of illegal hunters and moonshiners. During his thirty-year career (1955-1985), Shirley saw the Glades go from frontier wilderness to "ruination" at the hands of the Army Corps of Engineers. He watched as dikes cut off the water flow and controlled floods submerged islands that had supported man and animals for 3,000 years, killing much of the wildlife he was sworn to protect.

Book excerpt: A PI’s vacation in the Everglades is disrupted by a deadly hurricane—and dangerous criminals—in this riveting read by an Edgar Award–winning author. The peace and quiet of Max Freeman and Sherry Richards’s vacation ends abruptly when Hurricane Simone slams into the Sunshine State. Sherry suffers a devastating injury in the storm, and the two are left stranded in the swamp. But as they struggle to find help, they’re thwarted by not only opportunistic crooks looking to benefit from the disaster, but also hired muscle from a powerful oil company hoping to protect a lethal secret—regardless of who stands in the way—in this “survival-of-the-fittest tale” by a master of mystery and suspense (Newsday). “King vividly describes the hurricane’s force and the different ways people respond to it. Sherry displays her grit and Max his ingenuity in a series of desperate gambles as the story builds to an explosive climax. This is a worthy addition to a Florida subgenre that includes Carl Hiaasen’s Stormy Weather and Tim Dorsey’s Hurricane Punch.” —Publishers Weekly This ebook contains an illustrated biography of the author featuring never-before-seen photos.
