Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gist of Swedenborg The compilers would gladly have made room for the interpretative and philosophicalteachings which contribute so much to the content and form of Swedenborg's theology; but they have confined their effort to setting forth brie y and clearly the positive spiritual teachings. Where these seemed most packed with religious meaning and moment. The translation of the passages here brought together has been carefully revised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emanuel Swedenborg: His Life and Writings Swedenborg has as far as possible been left to tell his own story, and to reveal the heart of his own books. The selec tion of proper material from a territory so extensive has cost far more pains than the same amount of original com position. In many cases the selected passages have suffered severe abridgment. Swedenborg's thoughts are constantly delivered in bulky solution, and if in getting rid of the superfluous water I have ever strained away some of the essential substance, I have in all cases supplied the reference for my extract, whereby a suspicious reader may test its accuracy. The complaint however which I really dread is, that whilst I was straining I did not strain harder. As a critic of Swedenborg, my difficulties have not been slight. With a few exceptions, he has undergone no criticism. He has been cursed without reserve, and he has been blessed without reserve, but he has been rarely appreciated. I have therefore had to form many judgments which I feel sure would be modified had I enjoyed the discussion of liberal and enlightened minds. Book Life of Emanuel Swedenborg

Download or read book Life of Emanuel Swedenborg written by William White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Emanuel Swedenborg: Together With a Brief Synopsis of His Writings, Both Philosophical and Theological The following narrative, the reader will be able to appreciate a few of the good things contained in this Biography by Wilkin son. In 1854, Edwin Paxton Hood published Swedenborg A Biography and an Exposition, a work which has been the means of introducing Swedenborg to a large circle hitherto almost ignorant of his existence. In the same year, Woodbury M. Fernald published, in Boston, Mass, A Compendium of the Theological and Spiritual Writings of Swedenborg, to which an excellent life of the Author was prefixed, compiled in great part from previous biographies. In other forms, many sketches of the life of Swedenborg have been published. The Rev. 0. P. Hiller gives an excellent little biography in his vol ume of Gems from Swedenborg. Emerson tells the story of his life, in his own way, in Representative Men; and 3 Lecture by George Dawson, on Swedenborg, is now circulating, as a tract, by thousands throughout the land. All these things evidence a growing interest in the greatest teacher of modern times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Delphi Collected Works of Emanuel Swedenborg Illustrated written by Emanuel Swedenborg and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 16103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emanuel Swedenborg, an eighteenth century Christian mystic, philosopher and theologian, had a prolific career as an inventor and scientist. At the age of 53, he entered into a spiritual phase in which he began to experience dreams and visions, culminating in a "spiritual awakening" in which he received a revelation that Christ had appointed him to reform Christianity. Swedenborg devoted his enormous energy to interpreting the Bible and to relating what he had seen and heard in the world of spirits and angels. His ‘Arcana Cœlestia’ and ‘Apocalypse Revealed’ provide thought-provoking commentaries on the internal spiritual meaning of Genesis, Exodus and the Book of Revelation, while his famous ‘Heaven and Hell’ gives a mesmerising account of the afterlife and how people live after the death of the physical body. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documents Concerning the Life and Character of Emanuel Swedenborg WE here present to the English Reader the following Documents concerning the Life and Character of the Hon. Emanuel Swedenborg. They were collected and edited with great care in the German language by the learned Dr. J. F. I. Tafel, of Tubingen. As the theological writings of Swedenborg are beginning to be ex tensively read throughout Europe and America, a great call has been made for a Biography of this distinguished and enlightened author. These Documents were collected as materials to com pose his biography, but as (says Dr. These Documents, when properly arranged, form a complete body of information, which can, with great propriety, be published by itself, I have thought it proper to present them to the public as a forerunner to the Biography itself, to which I am now devoting all the time I can spare.
