Book excerpt: The early life of queen Gorgo involved helping her father reject the bribes of a tyrant as well as preparing herself for a glorious future as the queen of Sparta. "She always knew the fear would come. The body remembers the pain, but not the soul, she remembered a warm maternal voice telling her. You can overcome this, the voice said. The girl wrapped herself in a scarlet cloak. For a moment, she imagined that it was blood-spattered, but then she told herself that the cloak belonged to someone who faced the fear and won. Phobos, intangible fear, peered at her malevolently through the darkness, flashing momentary glimpses of courage in retreat. Gorgo felt a gulf between her and the world beyond precious walls dissolved. The imperturbable blackness remained, an uninvited guest mocking the solidity of her presence. Gorgo remained utterly still, feeling her defiance quietly growing in strength. She felt a brave dawn shimmering through the mist of formless fear. And then a hand reached for hers. She looked to her right and saw a boy whose eyes instantly locked onto hers. The sudden sensation of hands entwined surpassed the feeling of fearful flesh devouring her heart. The boy maintained his eyes on her as he held her hand tightly. Gorgo saw the look of courage in the boy's eyes. She knew that they both had to walk through the darkness and make it to the other side. As they held hands, they both saw an army rising and facing the darkness. Warriors sprung from the unwholesome blackness and began to assault the fear. Cries of pain echoed loudly for a moment, submerging the two children. Gorgo and the boy felt the darkness being defeated, their hearts beating in near-unison. Gorgo looked at the boy and imagined seeing war scars on his body. Then she knew who the boy was: Leonidas. The darkness now began to dissolve, and bright dawn light came pouring through the dying mist. Gorgo and Leonidas realized that they had already walked through the darkness. They had both overcome fear. Gorgo held on to the scarlet cloak. The boy was gone. Gorgo stood before an ocean of brightness. She blinked her eyes in a near-disbelieving fashion, as though expecting herself to awake from a dream. She still felt the boy's touch on her hand."

Book excerpt: Sara Stanley livens up a rural community on Prince Edward Island by sharing her natural gift of storytelling, transporting listeners to another time and place. Like many of L.M. Montgomery’s novels, The Story Girl is loosely inspired by real-life people and events. When Bev and Felix King encounter Sara Stanley, they are enamored by her ability to captivate both children and adults. While visiting their aunt and uncle’s farm, they spend most of their time listening to Sara’s imaginative tales. She, along with cousins, Dan, Felicity and Cecily, are occupied with extravagant narratives fueled by adventure, romance and the supernatural. It’s a childhood experience the King brothers will never forget. The Story Girl highlights the youngest members of the King family and their penchant for creativity. Despite their quaint setting, Sara’s fanciful tales breathe new life into their small town. It’s an impressive talent that will bring her notoriety at home and beyond. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Story Girl is both modern and readable.

They are also familiar with defeating them, and the heroes of Baneswatch are now enjoying the perks of suddenly being very much in demand for their services. When a job comes up in the distant city of Skaldshollow, it looks like easy coin: retrieve a stolen item, admire the views, get paid. But in a place twisted and haunted by ancient magic—and with the most infamous mage of them all, Joah Demonsworn, making a reappearance—our heroes soon find themselves threatened by enemies on all sides, old and new. And in the frozen mountains, the stones are walking . . .

Book The Poems of Lord Byron Don Juan

Download or read book The Poems of Lord Byron Don Juan written by Jane Stabler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-07 with total page 1280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byron’s Don Juan is one of the greatest poems in the English language. Byron’s friends initially agreed that ‘it will be impossible to publish this’. Byron prevailed, however, and the first two cantos were issued anonymously after much editorial revision. Even in its revised form, Don Juan was perceived as a radical attack on establishment values; the poem has remained a beacon for freedom of speech and retains its power to shock. Since it was published in 1819–24, all printed editions of the poem have used the text prepared by Byron’s publishers, John Murray and John Hunt. This is the first new text of the poem to be printed in two hundred years. The Longman edition is based on a comprehensive line-by-line analysis of the manuscripts, so the text of the poem follows Byron’s own voice, pace and pauses, rather than the grammatical punctuation and more cautious word choice inserted by his nineteenth-century editors. The Longman Don Juan has been annotated afresh, allowing readers to see where Byron left open the choice of words or rhymes, and demonstrating the extraordinary breadth and depth of his literary allusions, topical and cultural references, and socially coded jokes. Textual annotation includes reception history, extensive bibliographies and a detailed chronology, situating Don Juan in the literary, scientific, dramatic, political, musical and social life of the early nineteenth century. A detailed index to the poem and annotation provides an unparalleled resource for students and scholars.
