Book The Girl in Question

Download or read book The Girl in Question written by Tess Sharpe and published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this shocking psychological thriller and follow-up to New York Times bestseller The Girls I've Been, four teens face off against a wicked man in a remote forest in a desperate fight for their survival. High school is over, but Nora O’Malley’s life isn’t, which is weird now that her murderous stepdad Raymond is free. Determined to enjoy summer before her (possibly) imminent demise, Nora plans a ten day backpacking trip with Iris and Wes. Her plans hit a snag when Wes’s girlfriend tags along. Amanda is nice, so it’s not a huge issue—until she gets taken. Or rather, mistaken…for Nora. All because of a borrowed flannel. Now Raymond has a hostage. Nora has no leverage. Iris has a spear and Wes is building boobytraps. It’ll take all of their skills to make it out of the forest alive. There are three problems: Someone is lying. Someone is keeping secrets. And someone has to die.

Book The Girl Question in Education

Download or read book The Girl Question in Education written by Jane Bernard-Powers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of the genesis and development of vocational education for young women in the United States. Home economics, trade training and commercial education - the three key areas of vocational training available to young women during the progressive era - are the focus of this work. Beginning with a study of the "woman question", or what women were supposed to be, the book traces the three curriculum areas from prescription, through lively discussions of policy to the actual programs and student responses to the programs. The author tells the story of education for work from several different perspectives and draws on a vast array of sources to paint this broad canvas of vocational education for young women at the turn of the twentieth century.

Book Music in The Girl s Own Paper An Annotated Catalogue 1880 1910

Download or read book Music in The Girl s Own Paper An Annotated Catalogue 1880 1910 written by Judith Barger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century British periodicals for girls and women offer a wealth of material to understand how girls and women fit into their social and cultural worlds, of which music making was an important part. The Girl's Own Paper, first published in 1880, stands out because of its rich musical content. Keeping practical usefulness as a research tool and as a guide to further reading in mind, Judith Barger has catalogued the musical content found in the weekly and later monthly issues during the magazine's first thirty years, in music scores, instalments of serialized fiction about musicians, music-related nonfiction, poetry with a musical title or theme, illustrations depicting music making and replies to musical correspondents. The book's introductory chapter reveals how content in The Girl's Own Paper changed over time to reflect a shift in women's music making from a female accomplishment to an increasingly professional role within the discipline, using 'the piano girl' as a case study. A comparison with musical content found in The Boy's Own Paper over the same time span offers additional insight into musical content chosen for the girls' magazine. A user's guide precedes the chronological annotated catalogue; the indexes that follow reveal the magazine's diversity of approach to the subject of music.

Book excerpt: Coleen was born with a question in her mouth. She wondered whether her dog Thumper could laugh. She wondered why zebras weren't plaid, and whether porpoises could play the piano if only they had hands. She wondered too why some people lived in shacks and other people lived in grand houses and what the polar bears will do if the polar ice melts. Her parents worried that Coleen asked too many questions. But one day, question asking began to spread all over town, and very surprising things began to happen. Coleen was first published by the Feminist Press in l974 when Arlie Hochschild, sociologist and author, was the mother of a three year old. In 2016 it was rewritten, newly illustrated by Rhiannon Williams and republished by Invisible Spaces of Parenthood.

Book Composing Questions

Download or read book Composing Questions written by Hadas Kotek and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the syntax and semantics of wh-questions through the lens of intervention effects, offering a new proposal on overt and covert wh-movement. In this book, Hadas Kotek investigates the syntax and semantics of wh-questions, offering a new solution to a central question in the study of interrogatives: given that overt wh-movement is cross-linguistically common, is syntactic movement a prerequisite for the interpretation of wh-phrases? Some linguists argue that all wh-phrases undergo movement to interrogative C, even if covertly; others propose mechanisms of in-situ interpretation that do not require any movement. Kotek moves beyond these positions to argue that wh-in-situ does move covertly, but not necessarily to C. Instead, she contends, wh-in-situ undergoes a short movement step akin to covert scrambling. This makes the LF behavior of English parallel to the overt behavior of German. Kotek presents a series of self-paced reading experiments, alongside judgment data from German, to substantiate the idea of covert scrambling. She introduces new diagnostics for the underlying structure of questions, using as a principal tool the distribution of intervention effects. This system allows her to offer the first unified account for a range of phenomena of interrogative syntax-semantics as pied-piping, superiority effects, the cross-linguistically varied syntax of questions, and intervention effects. Kotek develops a theory of interrogative syntax-semantics; studies the phenomena of intervention effects in wh-questions, proposing that the nature of intervention is crucially tied to the availability of wh-movement in a question; and shows that covert wh-movement should be modeled as a short scrambling operation rather than an unbounded, successive-cyclic, and potentially long-distance movement operation.
