Book The Dispersion of the Gipsy Moth Vol 119 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dispersion of the Gipsy Moth Vol 119 Classic Reprint written by A. F. Burgess and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dispersion of the Gipsy Moth, Vol. 119 The dispersion of the species, as treated in the above mentioned report, was considered as local and long distance. The former condition was brought about by egg clusters being broken and scattered by birds or other animals that frequent infested trees. Clusters were also carried on driftwood (see pi. I), and those deposited on leaves (see Pl. II) were so stimes distributed by the wind. The caterpillars were occasionally found clinging to the bodies of animals or to the clothing of persons who had visited infested places and were carried short distances in this way. Many colonies were established in remote districts by the carriage of the larvae on vehicles, and egg clusters were sometimes transported on cordwood or lumber products shipped from infested forests. (see Pl. III.) The distribution of caterpillars upon vehicles was con sidered so important when the gipsy-moth work was begun in 1891 that inspectors were stationed along the main highways to stop and examine all vehicles and to destroy any caterpillars found before allowing them to pass out of the infested area. This precaution was entirely warranted in view of the discovery that many farms had become infested by the transportation of caterpillars on vehicles. Places infested in this manner, however, were usually occupied by milkmen, peddlers, swill gatherers, or persons whose business caused them to drive regularly to and from the city during the summer, or to neighborhoods that were badly infested with the gipsy moth. Book Report on the Gipsy Moth Work in New England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report on the Gipsy Moth Work in New England Classic Reprint written by Albert Franklin Burgess and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Gipsy Moth Work in New England In carrying on measures for the control of any insect pest it is necessary to conduct many experirnents in order to determine the means which are most feasible for reducing the damage. For more than 20 years experiments have been carried on more or less con tinuously by the State of Massachusetts and other States to which the gipsy moth has spread, as well as by the Bureau of Entomology, for the purpose of perfecting field measures for holding the insect in check, and from time to time improvements have been made which have reduced the cost of handling infested areas. Spraying ma chinery has been developed so that at the present time it is entirely practical to treat large areas at a moderate cost. The banding of trees with tanglefoot has largely replaced the use of burlap bands and reduced the cost of this method of treatment. In fact, so much work has been done along these lines that the best methods of treat ment are well understood and practiced in the areas where the gipsy moth is prevalent. Minor improvements are being made from time to time but in general satisfactory methods of hand suppression have been adopted. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dispersion of the Gipsy Moth There is, however, another 'class' of insects which does not spread by flying. Several distinct types exist, and among them may be mentioned such insects as the San Jose scale and other closely re lated species. The structure of the females of this group is Such that they remain fixed before becoming sexually mature; hence the distribution of the species is, confined, so far as natural means is concerned, to the dissemination of the young, which have the ability' to move about for a limited period. The adult insects are spread by artificial means on nursery stock and on living trees or shrubs that are shipped from one locality to another for planting or propagation. The brown-tail moth has also been distributed on nursery stock, but it is carried in. This way while the small caterpillars are ink'the hibernating webs Where they pass the winter. Book The Gipsy Moth as a Forest Insect

Download or read book The Gipsy Moth as a Forest Insect written by W. F. Fiske and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gipsy Moth as a Forest Insect: With Suggestions as to Its Control This obvious improvement is in part only apparent and in part very real and due to a variety of causes. The apparent amelioration is due to the fact that the gipsy moth is at present most active in a belt of towns beyond the limits of the densely populated metropolitan area. Were Boston's parks again to be infested as formerly; were the forests in the Middlesex Fells, for example, to be defoliated, a wave of remonstrance would arise which might be heard halfway across the continent. But a thousand acres of forest in the sparsely popu lated and financially poor towns 30 to 50 miles away may be repeatedly defoliated and ultimately destroyed without creating more than a ripple in comparison. And this latter is precisely what is taking place at the present time. It will be necessary to wait until in its slow progress the gipsy moth invades another great metropolitan area before popular interest will be aroused to an extent comparable to that existing in Massachusetts a few years ago. The real amelioration so noticeable in the metropolitan district, and distinctly in'evidence everywhere, is due to at least four main causes: (1) The perfection and standardization of the methods for artificial repression; (2) the death of a large proportion of the more susceptible trees or their removal from the infested woodlands; (3) the importa tion of parasitic and predatory insect enemies; and (4) the develop ment of the wilt disease. As it is intended at this time to consider the gipsy moth strictly as a forest insect no mention need be made of the methods for artificially suppressing it. On account of their expense these methods can not be used in forests other than those which it is desired to protect for aesthetic and sentimental reasons.
