Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book tells diff erent parts of things that occurred during my life. Some things are interpreted, and other things are just thoughts. I guess you would say I have a variety of diff erent situations, which would range from fi ction, nonfi ction, fantasies that I daydream about or imagine could happen one day. I use diff erent things in my poems to describe how my life is and was; some are happy, and some are unhappy. Th ere are several parts of my poems that in some ways describes my feelings of when my mother past away. I also included my experiences of when I lived in the projects. I could have been more graphic about the things I came across with some of the people I saw and the things they have done, but that might have been a little too much to handle. I also described one of my poems as a tiny monster with claws, beneath the fl oors. Th at creature was a large rat, and that was a true story. My family and I had no choice but to live in that house due to fi nancial problems, because it possibly would have hurt my career if I left. Well, thats a short version of my poetry.

Book Pictures on the Radio From the Frontlines of History with NPR News

Download or read book Pictures on the Radio From the Frontlines of History with NPR News written by Chip Somodevilla and published by powerHouse Books. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PICTURES ON THE RADIO compiles the work of David Gilkey, a celebrated conflict photographer who helped NPR bring vivid life to big and small stories with global impact. Known for chronicling pain and beauty in war and conflict, he was on assignment in Helmand, Afghanistan in 2016 when he and NPR's Afghan interpreter, Zabihullah Tamanna were killed by a Taliban ambush of their convoy. Considered one of the best photojournalists in the world, his death made headlines around the country and the globe. The nine chapters in PICTURES ON THE RADIO include photographs from assignments in Afghanistan, Haiti, and Gaza covering war, natural disasters, and political strife, but also a surreal journey on the tran-Siberian railroad, a voyage down the Ganges, and coverage of American war-veterans showcasing Gilkey's range as a photojournalist whose work captured the strength and fragility of our humanity and our planet. An essay by NPR correspondents--including Jason Beaubien, Ari Shapiro, David Greene, Julie McCarthy, and Eric Westervelt--who accompanied David on assignment introduces each chapter of award-winning photographs and an afterword by Alyda Gilkey paints a portrait of the man behind the camera. PICTURES ON THE RADIO continues David Gilkey's lifelong mission of connecting Americans to the frontlines far beyond their shores. The drama, beauty and dignity of his subjects continue to move the heart and the conscience.

Book The Theology of Langdon B Gilkey

Download or read book The Theology of Langdon B Gilkey written by Kyle A. Pasewark and published by IET. This book was released on 1999 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, on 7 June 1998, in a sermon delivered at the close of the Narratives of American Religion Conference, Langdon Gilkey said: "History, ... cannot be understood without the religious dimension that is ever-present in it, and so theological understanding is a part of the understanding of ourselves in time. In turn, theology is meaningless unless it interprets actuality, the actuality of historical experience, of nature's processes, and of personal life."

Book The Man Who Loved Books Too Much

Download or read book The Man Who Loved Books Too Much written by Allison Hoover Bartlett and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-09-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of The Orchid Thief, a compelling narrative set within the strange and genteel world of rare-book collecting: the true story of an infamous book thief, his victims, and the man determined to catch him. Rare-book theft is even more widespread than fine-art theft. Most thieves, of course, steal for profit. John Charles Gilkey steals purely for the love of books. In an attempt to understand him better, journalist Allison Hoover Bartlett plunged herself into the world of book lust and discovered just how dangerous it can be. John Gilkey is an obsessed, unrepentant book thief who has stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of rare books from book fairs, stores, and libraries around the country. Ken Sanders is the self-appointed "bibliodick" (book dealer with a penchant for detective work) driven to catch him. Bartlett befriended both outlandish characters and found herself caught in the middle of efforts to recover hidden treasure. With a mixture of suspense, insight, and humor, she has woven this entertaining cat-and-mouse chase into a narrative that not only reveals exactly how Gilkey pulled off his dirtiest crimes, where he stashed the loot, and how Sanders ultimately caught him but also explores the romance of books, the lure to collect them, and the temptation to steal them. Immersing the reader in a rich, wide world of literary obsession, Bartlett looks at the history of book passion, collection, and theft through the ages, to examine the craving that makes some people willing to stop at nothing to possess the books they love.

Book On Niebuhr

Download or read book On Niebuhr written by Langdon Gilkey and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the eminent theologian Langdon Gilkey demonstrates in this book. Niebuhr was able to provide such a persuasive answer because his social understanding was a theological understanding, one accomplished by viewing human being in relation to God as well as in its political and economic relations. This "Biblical" understanding of human nature, while acknowledging the often deep ambiguity and hypocrisy of the real historical world, also revealed a divine hand guiding that history. To Niebuhr, it is God's participation in history that gives it meaning and a promise of fulfillment, and presents believers with the possibility of a social realism that maintains its moral nerve rather than succumbing to cynicism or despair.".
