Book excerpt: She could’ve waited to do her work tomorrow. She could’ve come back earlier. She could’ve taken a different road. She could’ve left the music as it was. She could’ve waited a second longer to step on the gas. She could’ve… Nothing. There was nothing she could’ve done. Because it had already happened. It took Levka Keyton far too long to understand this concept. It took her 27 years, 10 months and a life changing accident to be exact. Neither her most horrific nightmares nor her most magical dreams could compare to her new life. A new life filled with colors, shapes, and sounds. A new life that she could never leave behind, or run away from. But that didn’t matter. Because here Levka was, finally ready to not walk, but run towards her new life. This life was hers, and she was ready for it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Artist's Letters from Japan is a book by John La Farge. La Farge was an artist and writer who penned extensively on Japanese art, culture and customs. Excerpt: "The land is cultivated like a garden, the lotus leaves fill the ditches, and one or two pink flowers are just out. From time to time we saw stretches of blue sea. And once, for an instant, as I looked up into the hazy, clouded sky, far beyond the hills, that were lost in the mist into which the rice-field stretched, I saw a pale, clear blue opening in which was an outline more distinct, something very pure, the edge of a mountain, looking as if it belonged to another world than the dewy moist one in which we are—the cone of Fusi-yama."

Book Salzburg and the Jews

Download or read book Salzburg and the Jews written by Stan Nadel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I moved to Salzburg in 2002 I followed in the footsteps of thousands of others and fell in love with this quaint old city and its beautiful surroundings. I am a historian by trade and I was enchanted with walking the city's streets and identifying where various historical events had taken place. I am also Jewish, so I read all I could about the history of Jews in Salzburg and began to fit what I learned into the geography of the streets and buildings that I so much enjoyed. As I learned more about the city and its history, I found it unsettling to see the shadows of a very ugly past in the city I have come to love. I liked my first apartment, but I was not happy that one of Adolf Eichmann's associates lived in an apartment downstairs after it had been taken away from an elderly Jewish man... There are many such shadows in Salzburg, but it remains a beautiful city with many attractions. I certainly do not want to discourage anyone from coming to Salzburg to enjoy, as I do, its beauty, culture, food and wonderful beers. To the contrary, I would like to encourage others to come and share my pleasure. But I also want to share what I have learned with visitors to Salzburg who might like to know about some aspects of its history that are often neglected by the standard tourist guidebooks. (From the Preface)

Book The Second Coming of the Star Gods

Download or read book The Second Coming of the Star Gods written by Page Bryant and published by Hampton Roads Publishing. This book was released on 2004-02-01 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set amidst the haunting, mysterious beauty of Ancient Egypt, The Second Coming of the Star Gods is an epic tale of magic, political intrigue, and mythology. Rich in historical and mystical detail, the story centers on Khem and Tiye, two young apprentice priestesses in the Temple of the Sun. As the girls are initiated into the secret arts of dream interpretation, astronomy, and astral travel, a battle for the great empire’s throne is being waged between the Pharaoh and his half-brother--a battle in which the young apprentices will unwittingly play the decisive role. Engaging and hypnotic, The Second Coming of the Star Gods creates characters and a world so real you won’t want to soon leave. She masterfully recreates Egypt’s 4th Dynasty--the Pyramid Age--a time in which gods, goddesses, and magicians were the true rulers of the land.
