Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theo Grutter is a big, friendly bear of an unpretentious, spontaneous outdoorsman. Born and educated mostly in Switzerland to enter the corporate world, he soon discovered that this life wasn't for him. He moved to Paris and married Clara, a concert pianist. They landed in New York to search for a lifestyle more to their liking in which to raise a family, which soon grew to include five children. They lived in many places, finally settling in a small Mexican Pacific coast fishing village in winter and traveling up to Sitka, Alaska in the summers, where Theo still fishes as a solitary commercial fisherman. Theo and Clara took yearly walkabouts in many exotic countries of the world, with Theo ever observing, learning, and writing about how life works on Earth. Thinking Wild is the fruit of twelve years' work, a series of essays carved in Theo's nonnative and poetic English, written by a remarkable man with deep insight, a fisher philosopher, a seer and seeker railing against man's disrespect of other lifeforms on Earth. All is shared by a man who sees his life as his work of art, and treads a path towards a new way of seeing life more lovingly.

If anyone ministers, let him do it with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to Whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An absolute delight to read . . . How lucky we are that [Ruth Reichl] had the courage to follow her appetite.”—Newsday At an early age, Ruth Reichl discovered that “food could be a way of making sense of the world. If you watched people as they ate, you could find out who they were.” Her deliciously crafted memoir Tender at the Bone is the story of a life defined, determined, and enhanced in equal measure by a passion for food, by unforgettable people, and by the love of tales well told. Beginning with her mother, the notorious food-poisoner known as the Queen of Mold, Reichl introduces us to the fascinating characters who shaped her world and tastes, from the gourmand Monsieur du Croix, who served Reichl her first foie gras, to those at her politically correct table in Berkeley who championed the organic food revolution in the 1970s. Spiced with Reichl’s infectious humor and sprinkled with her favorite recipes, Tender at the Bone is a witty and compelling chronicle of a culinary sensualist’s coming-of-age. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Ruth Reichl's Delicious! Praise for Tender at the Bone “A poignant, yet hilarious, collection of stories about people [Reichl] has known and loved, and who, knowingly or unknowingly, steered her on the path to fulfill her destiny as one of the world’s leading food writers.”—Chicago Sun-Times “While all good food writers are humorous . . . few are so riotously, effortlessly entertaining as Ruth Reichl.”—The New York Times Book Review “Reading Ruth Reichl on food is almost as good as eating it. . . . Reichl makes the reader feel present with her, sharing the experience.”—Washington Post Book World “[In] this lovely memoir . . . we find young Ruth desperately trying to steer her manic mother's unwary guests toward something edible. It's a job she does now . . . in her columns, and whose intimate imperatives she illuminates in this graceful book.”—The New Yorker “A savory memoir of [Reichl’s] apprentice years . . . Reichl describes [her] experiences with infectious humor. . . . The descriptions of each sublime taste are mouthwateringly precise. . . . A perfectly balanced stew of memories.”—Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your church alive? Is it on fire? Are the power and presence of the Holy Spirit something that you feel and experience when you meet to worship the Lord with your brothers and sisters in Christ? Do the services bring blessings? Is the reality of God’s presence so real that you know without a shadow of doubt that God has spoken to you and you come away feeling challenged, edified and brought closer in your relationship to the Lord? In many churches there is evidence that the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are not operating as the scriptures indicate they should, and so it is little wonder that they are bereft of the power which God wants to make manifest through His people in His church and in the world.

Download or read book Gifts written by Richard Hyland and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-05 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gifts: A Study in Comparative Law is the first broad-based study of the law governing the giving and revocation of gifts ever attempted. Gift-giving is everywhere governed by social and customary norms before it encounters the law and the giving of gifts takes place largely outside of the marketplace. As a result of these two characteristics, the law of gifts provides an optimal lens through which to examine how different legal systems engage with social practice. The law of gifts is well-developed both in the civil and the common laws. Richard Hyland's study provides an excellent view of the ways in which different civil and common law jurisdictions confront common issues. The legal systems discussed include principally, in the common law, those of Great Britain, the United States, and India, and, in the civil law, the private law systems of Belgium and France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Professor Hyland also serves a critique of the dominant method in the field, which is a form of functionalism based on what is called the praesumptio similitudinis, namely the axiom that, once legal doctrine is stripped away, developed legal systems tend to reach similar practical results. His study demonstrates, to the contrary, that legal systems actually differ, not only in their approach and conceptual structure, but just as much in the results.

Download or read book Opening the Gifts of Christmas written by Jennifer Basye Sander and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lovely folktale holds that when Christianity first came to northern Europe, four spirits representing the virtues of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Love were sent from heaven to place lights on the original Christmas tree. Opening the Gifts of Christmas invites readers to honor those spirits year round with a collection of heartwarming holiday stories and suggestions for living the four virtues every day. Every year it seems the Christmas season grows longer--decorations appear in stores even before Halloween--and yet our collective Christmas spirit wanes. The holiday frenzy erodes our Christmas cheer, and on December 26 any warm yuletide sentiments we have left are packed away with the ornaments and wrapping paper for another ten months. What if, instead of losing the Christmas spirit so quickly, we could extend the faith, hope, charity, and love we feel at Christmastime throughout the year? Opening the Gifts of Christmas can help us do just that. In four sections, best-selling authors Jennifer Basye Sander and Jamie Miller define each virtue and explain not only its connection to Christmas but also its importance in our everyday lives. Inspiring true stories illuminate each of the virtues, followed by suggestions for practicing them everyday. Opening the Gifts of Christmas will help readers internalize the spirit of Christmas so that it is just they may have greater joy and personal peace year round.
