This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Gift of Painless Surgery It is well known that when an invention or discovery proves a brilliant success, many claimants to the honor appear, and in this case the abundant and weighty evidence in favor of the true discoverer seems to have been neutralized and obscured in the public mind by the activity of the friends of the introducer, who might well have rested content with his own impor. Tant share in the good work. The heat of controversy has passed away and the claimants themselves are gone. The evidence remains. It is to this rather than to extreme par tisan statements that the present generation should look in assigning the meed of gratitude and praise for this discovery, - a blessing to man only surpassed by Prometheus's of fire to miserable early men. The writer has examined with cane the containing the statements, and, more important, the evidence adduced in behalf of both the important claimants to the discovery, and without hesitation refers the readers to these, giving at the 'end of his own representation of the facts a list of the princi pal works issued by both sides during the years of the controversy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Humanity & Humility, internationally acclaimed surgeon, scientist and teacher Marc de Leval recounts with unflinching honesty and wry humour a career dedicated to saving the lives of children born with defective hearts. Marc's forthright account encompasses medical history, heroes, progress, success, failure and the remarkable resilience of the thousands of young patients who came under his care. It is a surprising and inspiring story. For more than 10 years, Marc was a Vice-President and Trustee on the Board of Chain of Hope, a charity working around the world to provide life-saving heart operations in countries where these children would otherwise not survive. To continue his support, £6 from all proceeds of the sale of his biography will go towards a fund to provide care for patients with heart disease as they go on to adolescence and adulthood. If you would like to make a further contribution please visit https: //cafdonate.cafonline.org/14407. "I used to swim at the same time as Marc every morning at the Royal Automobile Club. For years we just said "hello" and nothing else. One day we started talking and got to know each other. When I found out what he did as a job, what he'd done over the years and how many children's hearts he'd repaired or replaced it was probably one of the most special and humbling moments of my life. His story is truly remarkable." Sir Paul Smith. "Marc de Leval was an exceptional heart surgeon for children. I am so fortunate to have worked with him for 30 years. His incredible legacy is that so many of his patients are long term survivors. Infants and children on whom he operated and enabled to reach adult life to lead near normal lives. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to alter medical destiny and many of those with complicated hearts have serious medical problems which need continuing expert care, guidance, and even further surgery. In most of the countries less developed than our own, where the Chain of Hope has helped the "heart children" over the last two decades, there is no medical service created for this ever-increasing group of patients. Through buying Marc's book and by adding your own generous gifts to Chain of Hope we can bring the care needed by these long term survivors and continue giving them a future." Professor Jane Somerville.

Book Caleb s Eye a Spy s Journey Through Genesis

Download or read book Caleb s Eye a Spy s Journey Through Genesis written by Carroll W. Boswell and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-07-19 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a commentary in the form of a journal. It is meant to be something like a diary kept by a tourist or a spy of his travels in a strange land, recording questions and observations and opinions on everything he sees for other travelers on the same road. It could be also called a dialogue because the author records the conversation that he has with Genesis as he moves along, and the conversation he has with himself in the privacy of his motel room. In both ways it is the account of a journey with the idea that it may be of some use to others traveling the same road. The author is writing as an amateur to other amateurs. He is not a professional theologian nor a biblical scholar, and while his intent is to think as deeply and truly as he can, he is not doing so as a professional. There are several advantages that an amateur may have over a professional in a case like this. First the amateur can be much bolder in what he questions and in the answers he considers. The professional always has something on the line, always something at risk, namely his reputation. He cannot venture far off the beaten path without being in some danger of losing his respectability. The amateur, on the other hand, has little respectability to lose and little reputation to risk. What Dr. Boswell would not be able to risk in mathematical writing he can be quite at liberty to risk in this project. It can be exhilarating. Secondly the amateur has a much friendlier connection with the average reader. The amateur is something of an equal with the average reader, though presumably with something to say worth the hearing. Since they are introduced as equals, the reader can feel safer, less threatened, more entitled to join in the conversation that the author is trying to create. With a professional author there is always the sense of obligation that one should not argue back with the scholar; only another scholar has the credentials to join in their conversation, and the rest of us must sort it all out as best we can. But with this book there is no need of restraint; anyone can be drawn in to the discussion, anyone can feel entitled to disagree, with impunity. It can be exhilarating. This book is not meant to be a "Bible made simple" book. It is written by someone who loves to think and is written for others who love to think. It is written by someone who is not timid about difficult questions and is written for others who have no fear of such things. But most of all it is a book written for the pure joy of the thing and for those who might share that joy.
