Book The Gift in the Heart of Language

Download or read book The Gift in the Heart of Language written by Genevieve Vaughan and published by Mimesis. This book was released on 2015-05-15T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genevieve Vaughan offers a paradigm-shifting view of the structure of material and verbal communication, based on mother-child experience and confirmed by recent research in infant psychology. This view justifies a relational epistemology that informs the material gift economy as well as the structure of language itself.Provisioning economies give value to the receivers, and the circulation of gifts consolidates community. Understanding language as verbal gifting unites other orientation with reason to liberate us from biopathic patriarchal conceptions of humanity.Sketched against this background Vaughan introduces a conception of monetized exchange as a giftdenying and expropriating psychological mechanism, which is an unintended collective by product of verbal communication. Thisview stands as a warning against visions of the future in which the institutions of money and the market can be “fixed”to be more caring, and sanitized business as usual can halt the destruction of Mother Earth. Rather a gift economy, which takes as its model the mother-child interaction, the gifting in language and the gifting in mother-centered societies provideshope for a positive future.

Book excerpt: The award-winning New York Times bestseller about the extraordinary things that can happen when we harness the power of both the brain and the heart Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor. But back then his life was at a dead end until at twelve he wandered into a magic shop looking for a plastic thumb. Instead he met Ruth, a woman who taught him a series of exercises to ease his own suffering and manifest his greatest desires. Her final mandate was that he keep his heart open and teach these techniques to others. She gave him his first glimpse of the unique relationship between the brain and the heart. Doty would go on to put Ruth’s practices to work with extraordinary results—power and wealth that he could only imagine as a twelve-year-old, riding his orange Sting-Ray bike. But he neglects Ruth’s most important lesson, to keep his heart open, with disastrous results—until he has the opportunity to make a spectacular charitable contribution that will virtually ruin him. Part memoir, part science, part inspiration, and part practical instruction, Into the Magic Shop shows us how we can fundamentally change our lives by first changing our brains and our hearts.

Book Fire of Mercy Heart of the Word Vol 1

Download or read book Fire of Mercy Heart of the Word Vol 1 written by Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 927 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the unstudied eye, Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. Erasmo Leiva here acts as our guide, showing Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the non-technical reader. The tone is very muchÊgustate et videte, quoniam suavis est DominusÊ[taste and see how good the Lord is]-as it is "friend, come up higher!". The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart/the light of the divine Word. Leiva points to Matthew's gospel as being deeply ecclesial because it is first Christological. He comments on the Greek text, demonstrating to the reader nuances in the text that defy translation into English without serious revision of the text. Leiva uses linguistic analysis to aid the non-Greek reader with the literal meaning of the text; numerous quotes from the Fathers and the liturgy of the church demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.

Book Spiritually Circumcise Your Heart Mind

Download or read book Spiritually Circumcise Your Heart Mind written by Timothy Leigh Walker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over the past sixteen years, I have been in the process of writing what God has put on my heart and mind. Of course, with time, both has been through a lot of things, changes of life, but most importantly, the process of being circumcised of the norms of what is being taught in our Sunday schools, pulpits, and the traditions of men throughout a lot of churches. Yes, things have changed, but the core of what was given me is in full labor, ready to be birthed. Well, those days are over; I have to let what is in me out so God can replenish me with a fresh revelation of his Word and plan for mankind. His Word never changes, but it will impregnate your mind to whereby you are in labor pains to birth that which has been given to you. I hope this book will open the eyes and understanding of many, answer some questions, drive you into the Word, and most of all pierce the heart to be more receptacles of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Remember, Jesus said in Mark 13:13, And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. God is guarantee of deliverance for his children who believe in and on his Son, Jesus Christ, and because of his love (level of victory eternally) that his children may have eternal life with him. Jesus said in Matthew 24:13, But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved, and the opposite of that statement is those who do not endure until the end will not be saved.
