Book excerpt: There are five major temptations that God’s church and people will face in their lifetime—issues that will challenge their loyalty to truth and determine their destinies. God has looked down the corridors of time, foreseeing this, and outlined simple steps to help us overcome. Then, to keep these battle plans from crafty and conniving eyes, He has hidden them in the minor details of the five battles King David could not fight himself. God knew there would be those who would doubt whoever discovered The Giant Code, so He also placed it in a very popular prophecy—one that few who read their Bibles could miss, the giant image King Nebuchadnezzar saw in Daniel 2. He revealed only challenging temptations, not the way to victories. Now is the time to uncover them. “Then said he unto me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had digged in the wall, behold a door.” Ezekiel 8:8 KJV

Out their high windows the lighthouse giants shone bright lanterns to guide ships safely past their homes. Blanco is the last of the lighthouse giants. From sunset to sunrise he shines his fish-oil lantern from his house on Cape Humbug, to aid steamer ships along the Oregon coast. Jenny Hughes, age ten, is Blanco’s friend. Jenny lives with her father, Jacob, on the Hughes Dairy Ranch below Cape Humbug. Each day Jenny and her father bring Blanco a kettle of clam chowder for his daily meal. Jenny teaches Blanco reading and writing. In turn, the lighthouse giant teaches Jenny, who wishes to become a marine scientist, the ways of the ocean and its creatures. Blanco’s job is threatened when a conman, Professeur Poisson, arrives in Port Beaver, hoping to replace the giant with a first-order Fresnel lens and modern machinery. Can Jenny help save the giant’s lighthouse job? A tough task considering the entire town is against her. Book-with-Tunes! Scan the QR codes or click links to hear the songs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year London, 1782: center of science and commerce, home to the newly rich and the desperately poor. In the midst of it all is the Giant, O'Brien, a freak of nature, a man of song and story who trusts in myths, fairies, miracles, and little people. He has come from Ireland to exhibit his size for money. O'Brien's opposite is a man of science, the famed anatomist John Hunter, who lusts after the Giant's corpse as a medical curiosity, a boon to the advancement of scientific knowledge. In her acclaimed novel, two-time Man Booker Prize winning author Hilary Mantel tells of the fated convergence of Ireland and England. As belief wrestles knowledge and science wrestles song, so The Giant, O'Brien calls to us from a fork in the road as a tale of time, and a timeless tale.

Book More Stories I Lived

Download or read book More Stories I Lived written by Kenneth P. Campbell and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ken Campbell's first book of stories from his "growing up years" and early adult life—Stories I Lived–was so captivating that it left readers with an appetite for more. More Stories I Lived will surely satisfy the palate and grab the imagination through the author's vivid, folksy storytelling from a much simpler time—when survival meant hard work and boys had the time to ride out on horseback and explore the rural wilderness. Campbell writes with humor and purpose, as he tells the stories he lived and the hard-learned life lessons that survival gave him. From picking his first tomatoes to raising a willful pet sheep, from exploring a hidden cave to sledding uncontrolled down a steep hill, from enduring a home-style haircut to corralling a run-away horse. His stories will make you laugh, and they will even make you wince. Yet, don't worry—everything will come out all right in the end, and you'll come away having enjoyed the journey and learned something with the author as well. “More wonderful tales from a true treasure! Uncle Kenny takes us to a simpler time with smiles aplenty and great life lessons along the way.” – Eric Brown, Ministerial Director, Upper Columbia Conference

Book Who Wrote the Book of Life

Download or read book Who Wrote the Book of Life written by Lily E. Kay and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed history of one of the most important and dramatic episodes in modern science, recounted from the novel vantage point of the dawn of the information age and its impact on representations of nature, heredity, and society. Drawing on archives, published sources, and interviews, the author situates work on the genetic code (1953-70) within the history of life science, the rise of communication technosciences (cybernetics, information theory, and computers), the intersection of molecular biology with cryptanalysis and linguistics, and the social history of postwar Europe and the United States. Kay draws out the historical specificity in the process by which the central biological problem of DNA-based protein synthesis came to be metaphorically represented as an information code and a writing technology—and consequently as a “book of life.” This molecular writing and reading is part of the cultural production of the Nuclear Age, its power amplified by the centuries-old theistic resonance of the “book of life” metaphor. Yet, as the author points out, these are just metaphors: analogies, not ontologies. Necessary and productive as they have been, they have their epistemological limitations. Deploying analyses of language, cryptology, and information theory, the author persuasively argues that, technically speaking, the genetic code is not a code, DNA is not a language, and the genome is not an information system (objections voiced by experts as early as the 1950s). Thus her historical reconstruction and analyses also serve as a critique of the new genomic biopower. Genomic textuality has become a fact of life, a metaphor literalized, she claims, as human genome projects promise new levels of control over life through the meta-level of information: control of the word (the DNA sequences) and its editing and rewriting. But the author shows how the humbling limits of these scriptural metaphors also pose a challenge to the textual and material mastery of the genomic “book of life.”
