Book excerpt: Ever since humans were first able to think consciously about the world around them, they have tried to find out whether the concrete, rational universe we inhabit doesn't have something else behind it -- something revealed only in tantalizing glimpses. Unsolved Mysteries looks at some of these intriguing questions that humans have tried to grapple with, offering rational explanations where appropriate, but not ignoring the possibility of something that we cannot explain being responsible. An Eastern Airlines Lockheed Tri-Star crashed in the Everglades on December 29, 1972, killing the crew and most of the passengers. Undamaged parts salvaged from the wreck were subsequently incorporated into other aircraft under repair. Soon after, several people reported meeting the dead captain and flight engineer, either in the cabin or on the flight deck of some of these aircraft. It was as if the spirits of the two men were watching over other planes to ensure that a similar tragedy did not take place.

Book Truth and Lives on Film

Download or read book Truth and Lives on Film written by John T. Aquino and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-06-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as the Silent Era, movie studios were sued over depictions of real people and events. Filmmakers have always altered the details of true stories and actual persons, living or dead, to make narratives more workable and characters more compelling. When truth and fantasy become inextricably mixed, the effect on people's lives can be significant, even devastating. This expanded second edition presents an updated history of legal issues surrounding the on-screen embellishment of reality, with a focus on important court decisions and the use of disclaimers. Seventeen courtroom dramas are given fact-versus-fiction analyses, and the The Perfect Storm (1991) is covered in extensive detail. A concluding chapter is devoted to actors who became so identified with fictionalized characters that they sought exclusive rights to those personas.

Book excerpt: More so than even the sea, the world of aviation has spawned an amazing store of tales of ghosts, the supernatural and inexplicable events, ghostly bombers and phantom aircrew on long-deserted airfields, prophetic warnings from beyond the grave, restless spirits apparently drawn back to places from which they flew. This book looks in dispassionate detail at many of these stories. More than just repeating well-worn legends and myths, Echoes in the Air relates the background to these ghostly tales, based on eye-witness accounts and historical facts. The Montrose ghost, the haunted watch tower at East Kirby and the messages from the doomed R101 crew are all investigated. So too are the specters of Eastern Airlines Flight 401, the phantom Polish airman at Lindholme, the North Weald ghosts, and stories from the author's own experiences as a WWII bomber pilot. The book is illustrated throughout with historical material, and specially commissioned photographs taken at the haunted airfields themselves. Reprinted, the final work from the renowned aviation author Jack Currie, Echoes in the Air is set to become the classic collection of aviation ghost stories.

Book REAL GHOST STORIES That You Haven t Heard A Million Times Before

Download or read book REAL GHOST STORIES That You Haven t Heard A Million Times Before written by UFO Guy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I began investigating UFOs and the Paranormal in High School. I started an afterschool club for extra credit which began immensely popular. Almost from Day One people wanted to tell me their stories of encounters with the unexplained. I wasn't really ready for this and it kind of freaked me out, but at the same time I was intriqued. I gathered a small group of students and teachers together and we started investigating some of the claims that came our way. Although I have held jobs completely unrelated to paranormal investigations, I kept on with it as a hobby and eventually started speaking about it in meetings throughout the USA and Canada. I got the name 'The UFO Guy' because of all the radio interviews I started doing. DJs and Radio Personalities listed me as 'The UFO Guy' on their bulletin boards and online sites as a good guest to have on when it comes to the unexplained.

Book Television Fright Films of the 1970s

Download or read book Television Fright Films of the 1970s written by David Deal and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the made-for-television movie has long been regarded as a poor stepchild of the film industry, then telefilm horror has been the most uncelebrated offspring of all. Considered unworthy of critical attention, scary movies made for television have received little notice over the years. Yet millions of fans grew up watching them--especially during the 1970s--and remember them fondly. This exhaustive survey addresses the lack of critical attention by evaluating such films on their own merits. Covering nearly 150 made-for-TV fright movies from the 1970s, the book includes credits, a plot synopsis, and critical commentary for each. From the well-remembered Don't Be Afraid of the Dark to the better-forgotten Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby, it's a trustworthy and entertaining guide to the golden age of the televised horror movie.
