But in winter, the small town hunkers down for a different attraction - the annual holiday production at Gettysburg College. This year, Abby Potter chooses for her subject the well-known local legend of a Civil War steam locomotive inhabited by ghosts. She embellishes the folktale with a vampire. It’s a story line she thinks she invented. Production of Vampire Train is underway, but Abby has one big problem. She can’t find a decent thespian for the leading role. Her boss suggests Malcolm McClellan, Ph.D., a history professor at the college and a renowned Civil War re-enactor. Abby bristles at the suggestion. She has avoided the brooding, mysterious man for years. With his penetrating stare and quick temper, he exudes danger. But the clock is ticking, and she’s desperate. Malcolm will be her actor. Book Blue Dawn Over Gettysburg

Download or read book Blue Dawn Over Gettysburg written by Joe DeSantis and published by . This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the early spring of 1860. The United States is in turmoil, with New England abolitionists and Southern fire-eaters spewing hateful rhetoric back and forth across the Mason Dixon Line. In the midst of this ominous backdrop, an idealistic Pennsylvania college student is sent to a remote Louisiana plantation named Etenel Babako to conduct scientific field tests. Despite portents of danger upon his arrival, John Larson remains blissfully unaware his grave danger. The Cajun name of the plantation translates as Eternal Feast, and John finds out too late that that the estate's strange, reclusive owner is actually a vampire. A vicious attack and sudden transformation of this young man into a hellish predator binds him against his will to the plantation unless he can finally discover his one true "passion," that lone vestige of humanity which will free him from his eternal servitude. A sinister plot hatched by the Master Vampire and estate owner, Jacques Dumaine, works to perfection, as a staged accidental death of the young man leaves John mourned and quickly forgotten. Time passes quietly for John in his surreal new life of slaves, sugar cane, Spanish moss, and recurring blood lust. Only a chance encounter with the outside world allows him to learn of the Civil War that has been raging for over 2 years. It is at that fateful moment John discovers that HIS passion is his undying love for the Union. It allows him to break free of the dominating restraints of his Master and the plantation. He swiftly leaves Louisiana with a daring plan that would put his supernatural powers to good use. Under the cover of night, he works his way back up North to secretly disable high ranking Confederate Generals in the hope that siphoning their blood will result in needless battlefield casualties and strategic mistakes. John eventually overtakes the invading Army of Northern Virginia in his home state of Pennsylvania, near the town of Gettysburg. One by one, with an equal combination of skill and luck, he isolates and attacks members of the Rebel high command, including Commanding General Robert E. Lee himself. But John finds himself not only the hunter, but also the hunted. The Freemasons, the vampires' arch enemy, detect his presence and dispatch agents sworn to his destruction. Furthermore, he must come to grips with a being even more powerful than any vampire-the dreaded specter of Death itself! Night creatures do exist; even more disturbing is the fact that this vampire's actions become interwoven with real Civil War era people, timelines, battle sequences, and geographic locations. The question then becomes: Could this macabre slice of alternative history have actually happened?

Book Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter written by Seth Grahame-Smith and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin, where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his suffering mother's bedside. She's been stricken with something the old-timers call "Milk Sickness." "My baby boy..." she whispers before dying. Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother's fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire. When the truth becomes known to young Lincoln, he writes in his journal, "henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become a master of mind and body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose..." Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, Abe sets out on a path of vengeance that will lead him all the way to the White House. While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years. Using the journal as his guide and writing in the grand biographical style of Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, Seth has reconstructed the true life story of our greatest president for the first time-all while revealing the hidden history behind the Civil War and uncovering the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of our nation.

  • Release : 2007-09-27
  • ISBN : 1467827924
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Gettysburg Unearthed written by John G. Sabol Jr. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-09-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third in a series of anthropological studies which analyze ghosts and haunting phenomena in their cultural context. A history of visitations to the Gettysburg landscape is linked to the presence or absence of anomalous sensory manifestations. The preliminary analysis of the data suggests that the hauntings at Gettysburg may be a product of sociocultural factors, in part related to the growth of heritage tourism, rather than any ghostly manifestations by civil war soldiers. Since this is a preliminary analysis, a research design is proposed to further excavate the Gettysburg landscape. This approach is based on the use of ethnographic context, spatial symmetry, cultural relativity, and performance-based investigative practices. The author proposes that through this methodology, acontrolled excavation of the landscape can be made, thus unearthing a more scientific analysis and evaluation of Gettysburg as a haunted cultural place.

Book The Enduring Civil War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gary W. Gallagher
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2020-09-02
  • ISBN : 0807174076
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book The Enduring Civil War written by Gary W. Gallagher and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the seventy-three succinct essays gathered in The Enduring Civil War, celebrated historian Gary W. Gallagher highlights the complexity and richness of the war, from its origins to its memory, as topics for study, contemplation, and dispute. He places contemporary understanding of the Civil War, both academic and general, in conversation with testimony from those in the Union and the Confederacy who experienced and described it, investigating how mid-nineteenth-century perceptions align with, or deviate from, current ideas regarding the origins, conduct, and aftermath of the war. The tension between history and memory forms a theme throughout the essays, underscoring how later perceptions about the war often took precedence over historical reality in the minds of many Americans. The array of topics Gallagher addresses is striking. He examines notable books and authors, both Union and Confederate, military and civilian, famous and lesser known. He discusses historians who, though their names have receded with time, produced works that remain pertinent in terms of analysis or information. He comments on conventional interpretations of events and personalities, challenging, among other things, commonly held notions about Gettysburg and Vicksburg as decisive turning points, Ulysses S. Grant as a general who profligately wasted Union manpower, the Gettysburg Address as a watershed that turned the war from a fight for Union into one for Union and emancipation, and Robert E. Lee as an old-fashioned general ill-suited to waging a modern mid-nineteenth-century war. Gallagher interrogates recent scholarly trends on the evolving nature of Civil War studies, addressing crucial questions about chronology, history, memory, and the new revisionist literature. The format of this provocative and timely collection lends itself to sampling, and readers might start in any of the subject groupings and go where their interests take them.

Book How to Kill a Vampire

Download or read book How to Kill a Vampire written by Liisa Ladouceur and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citing examples from folklore, as well as horror films, TV shows, and works of fiction, this book details all known ways to prevent vampirism, including how to protect oneself against attacks and how to destroy vampires. While offering explanations on the origins and uses of most commonly known tactics in fending off vampirism, the book also delves much deeper by collecting historical accounts of unusual burial rites and shocking superstitions from European history, from the “real” Serbian vampire Arnold Paole to the unique Bulgarian Djadadjii, a professional vampire “bottler.” It traces the evolution of how to kill the fictional vampire—from Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the Hammer horror films beginning in the 1950s to Anne Rice’s Lestat and the dreamy vamps of Twilight, True Blood, and The Vampire Diaries—and also celebrates the most important slayers, including Van Helsing, Buffy, and Blade. In exploring how and why these monsters have been created and the increasingly complex ways in which they are destroyed, the book not only serves as a handy guide to the history and modern role of the vampire, it reveals much about the changing nature of human fears.
