Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German System of Industrial Schooling Dear Sir: In compliance with your recent request for an up-to-date report on the German system of industrial education for publication, I take pleasure in sending to you through the Department of State a copy of my special report on the subject in which your Association is interested. The monograph herewith submitted is not intended as a complete description of the organization and methods of industrial education in Germany, but merely as an exposition of the general principles of the system. This system represents the result of many years' study and experience of the German people in endeavoring to solve the problems involved in the education of the industrially employed youth of the manufacturing communities - a topic which is now occupying the attention of the educational experts and reformers in the United States, Great Britain and other civilized countries. Book The Schools of Forestry and Industrial Schools of Europe

Download or read book The Schools of Forestry and Industrial Schools of Europe written by Birdsey Grant Northrop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schools of Forestry and Industrial Schools of Europe: With Other Papers N o feature of the Educational Systems of Germany, Switzer land, Austria, Belgium, France and other European countries is more striking to an American Observer, than the large number of Industrial Schools, specially designed to train ap prentices and make skilled workmen and competent foremen. These schools are very numerous, and as various as the kinds of industry pursued in each country or province. There has been the greatest progress in manufactures in those countries where these schools have been maintained longest and most liberally. Geneva has for many years maintained a Horological School. And the Swiss watches have long been celebrated throughout the world. Last summer I visited the new Horological Institute then building in Geneva, a magnificent edifice to cost over and also witnessed the work Of the school then in its Old quarters. The course of study and practice covers three years. There were seven instructors, who are experts both in the theory and practice. NO one can graduate till he has proved his skill, again and again, by making an entire watch of stand ard excellence. The patient training Of these classes, or rather of each individual member, in the minutest particulars, both in theory and practice, and the criticism Of defects in the work done, illustrate the attention given to details in all Industrial Schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nation's Need: Chapters on Education Own case. Accordingly most men, and most women too, have views on education, tinged as a rule with reaction against the system to which they were sub jected. A second cause of dissatisfaction arises from the visible imperfections of the systems at work among us. Business men have for years been telling us that when they want correspondence clerks to write their foreign letters they find the product Of the German school more useful than that of the English school. The heads of great industries proclaim that they are handicapped in competition with German industries of the same class by the better scientific equipment of the specialists whom the Germans em ploy. Our universities, old and new, alike depend for the bulk of their text books in all subjects of study on the German universities. Whether the student deals with Greek or Latin, with modern languages, or even with English, with chemistry or with geography, he must have recourse to the works of German profes sors. The demands made on the schools by reformers are Of every variety. The public schools are criticized by one set of observers for the narrowness Of their curriculum; by another for the inefficiency of their instruction; by a third for their devotion to outdoor games. The board schools are condemned by some for giving instruction without forming Character, and by others for the lack Of thoroughness in their in struction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Training: Being a Suggestive Sketch of a National System of Industrial Instruction, Founded on a General Diffusion of Practical Science Among the People Not many years ago the present volume would have required another one for its justification. It is written on the assumpton, - 1stly - that Scientific Knowledge when judiciously selected and appropriately taught, adds very materially to the chances of Industrial Success, - 2ndly - that this maxim having been assiduously adhered to by some Continental Nations, has given a very marked impulse to their industrial prosperity, and 3rdly - that our own can only be secured by following a similar course. - Now, not many years ago, Science, instead of being considered as almost synonymous with Practical Wisdom, was regarded with general distrust, the rapid progress of other Nations was stoutly denied, and it was a mark of patriotism to maintain that our industrial supremacy was and ever would be unshaken. - In vain did reliable Authors faithfully describe the Technical Institutions established in foreign countries, and first predict the probable results, then after a time relate the actual ones. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
