Book The German Car Industry

Download or read book The German Car Industry written by James Ruppert and published by . This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Ruppert explains why German cars from the 1980s were quite simply, wunderbar. Because when it came to build quality, reliability and performance, every other car made anywhere else in the world was rubbish. The 1980s was a time when if you went shopping a VW Polo was the perfect companion. Beating an MG away from the lights was dead easy in a GTI and making a lasting impression meant arriving in an SL, SLC or any enormous Mercedes S-Class. It was a time when BMW M3s were racing certainties and a Quattro Turbo would always stay glued to the road. Getting poolside and on the sun lounger before the Germans only required one of their fine Audi 100 Avants. Proper showing off meant a Porsche 911 Turbo with its wonderful attention seeking tea tray rear spoiler. And the model that every young, upwardly mobile professional wanted parked outside his or her mews flat was a BMW 3 Series. Ruppert details how all these companies progressed to the 1980s and just what they did when they got there. Luckily he was there too, flogging BMWs at the prestigious West End Showroom in Park Lane, to yuppies, film stars and anyone else who could afford the non-refundable 10% deposit. From the author of the critically acclaimed, "The British Car Industry Our Part in its Downfall," here is his unique take on the German one, and why it won.

Book Success factors for digital transformation

Download or read book Success factors for digital transformation written by Johannes Schmidt and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Controlling, grade: 1,3, Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences (Wiesbaden Business School), language: English, abstract: The main goal of this thesis is to thoroughly investigate what digital transformation is and which general success factors exist for businesses. It then collates in a concise way whether and to what extent selected German car manufacturers comply with these success factors. "Once a new technology rolls over you, if you’re not part of the steamroller, you’re part of the road"“ - Stewart Brand This metaphor skillfully illustrates what happens to businesses that do not take part in technological progression: they get obliterated. In addition, the cycle of new technologies is spinning faster and faster ever since, making it increasingly difficult for companies to survive and flourish. As evidence for this situation the average longevity of businesses in the S&P 500 index can be adduced. While in 1964, in average, a business would stay 33 years in the index, the duration went down to 24 years in 2016. It is estimated that this number will be cut in half by the year 2027. The major force behind this in the recent past is the digital transformation. Just a few years ago it was common standard to rent a movie in a video rental store, buy books at the local book store and to take pictures with analogue cameras. Among the most famous businesses in these markets were Blockbuster, Borders and Kodak. Nowadays, they are immaterial. The first two filed for bankruptcy and the latter is still trying to salvage itself. All of them share the same fate: they underestimated the change that came with digital innovations. In their place digital champions now reign: Netflix, Amazon and Samsung. If a similar fate would befall the German automotive industry, it would be devastating for the whole economy as over 1.8 million jobs are directly or indirectly dependent on it. In fact, among the four highest grossing companies in Germany 2017 were three car manufacturers. The extreme significance of this industry is evident.

Book Full speed towards a sustainable future The story of the electric car in Germany

Download or read book Full speed towards a sustainable future The story of the electric car in Germany written by Fabian Guse and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,7, VU University Amsterdam , language: English, abstract: “I believe in horses, automobiles are a passing phenomenon”1 (Kaiser Wilhelm II, 1905) More than 100 years ago when the first motorized vehicles appeared on the streets, Kaiser Wilhelm II was not able to see the potential of this invention and how it would change the world he lived in. Today we are facing the next revolution of transportation technology, elec-tric mobility (e-mobility). In consideration of continuous scarcity of fossil resources and pro-gressive environmental issues caused by increasing amounts of CO2 emissions in our atmos-phere, a rethinking of universally accepted habits is needed. Public and private transportation account for 19% of the overall CO2 emissions in Germany and is therefore one of the largest contributors to climate change and local air pollution (Umweltbundesamt, 2011). This circumstance also shows the great political relevance of this topic as well as the need to make the whole industry more sustainable. A sustainable innovation like the electric car can help to decrease the negative externalities of economic growth and reduce the ecological footprint of a modern-day life. Against this background, the German government proclaims that Germany should be the leading market for e-mobility; aiming to have a diffusion rate of one million electric cars until 2020 (Delhaes, 2008). In order to achieve this, they are dependent on the innovation activities of the German automotive industry. But consumers as well as car manu-factures seem to be skeptical about this novelty, which results in a comparable small diffusion rate of only 7114 electric cars in the end of 2012 (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, 2013). For instance, in Denmark the diffusion rate of new electronic cars is 30 times higher than in Germany and even The Netherlands have a rate that is 8 times higher (Masson, 2013). The mentioned diffu-sion rate shows the total number of newly registered electric cars in comparison to the total number of traditional fuel cars within a year. This is curious on a first view as Germany has the largest automotive industry in the world, consisting of firms like BMW, Daimler, Opel and Volkswagen. One would hence expect great interest and a proactive stance from both the firms as well as the government in supporting this innovation. (...) Table of Content 1. Introduction 1.1. Book The Automotive Industry in Germany Development of Energy Efficiency

Download or read book The Automotive Industry in Germany Development of Energy Efficiency written by Daniel Bierbrauer and published by Grin Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Sociology - Economy and Industry, grade: 1,0, University of Trier (Chair of Environmental and Urban Economics), course: European Environmental Economics, language: English, abstract: This paper will focus on the e-mobility and the evolution of electric vehicles and discuss environmental issues that are closely connected to the green movement. First a brief overview of the environmental aspects, related to the topic mentioned will be given. There will be a discussion not only on those aspects on a national level but also on a European and global level. Furthermore, this text will deal with the technology of the e-mobility and focus on exploring which economic, environmental and political aspects are connected with e-mobility and environmental concerns in Germany. Additionally, an international comparison between Germany and France, and Germany and the USA will be made; to enable the reader to know where these countries stand concerning sales of electric vehicles, political action and infrastructure of e-mobility. Over the past 40 years one can observe an evolution of "environmental concern" in several areas. This transition is called an evolution from environmentalism to green. There is a shift from emphasizing environmental problems to the underlying problems with our social, economic, technical or legal system. Further, the geographical focus changes from local problems to global issues. There has been a gradual change in the attitude towards business. From the business as the core of the problem to the business as a part of the solution to problems can be observed as well. From a marketing point of view one can observe the emerging importance of green awareness in the media during the late 80s. It is argued that a change in consumption behaviour of consumers led to the reaction of the producers. Moreover, since the early 1990s, more than 85% of the multinational companies in Europe have adapted themselves to this

Book Six Men Built the Modern Auto Industry

Download or read book Six Men Built the Modern Auto Industry written by Richard Alan Johnson and published by MotorBooks International. This book was released on with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of six extraordinary men who each built something from nothing, redefined the automotive industry after World War II, and redirected its course for the future: Henry Ford II (visionary autocrat with an iron will), Shoichiro Honda (most successful automotive entrepreneur since Henry Ford I), Eberhard von Kuenheim (founder of the modern BMW), Lee Iacocca, Ferdinand Piech (builder of Volkswagen Group) and Robert Lutz (who left retirement at 70 and is still highly influential at General Motors). What made them special was the sheer volume of fundamental change they brought to the largest industry in the history of the world. They not only re-shaped the auto business, the six made a sizable dent in the societies they lived in. To a man they were great cognitive thinkers. Their minds worked with animal speed, even instinct speed. But more than anything these were brave and cantankerous souls who rode the waves of history. Each could see the future. They could just make it out-sometimes imperfectly, but could see it nonetheless. They took a business that had begun to mature and decline by the 1930s and found ways to make it fresh and whole again.- The compelling story of the global car business over the past half-century.- A lively and engaging narrative that recounts some times collaborative, sometimes archly antagonistic interactions among the men- Full of business revelations at the highest level, written by a journalist operating at the heart of the industry- Global appeal that shows how automotive groups in the USA, Europe and Asia have influenced each other- A business story interlaced with personal details that explains why the six were determined to be successfulAbout the AuthorFor two decades, Richard Johnson has worked for Crain Communications, publisher of the world's leading automotive business publications. Book Moving towards a new paradigm of collaboration The influence of current automotive trends on mobility business models and competitive advantage of traditional German OEMs

Download or read book Moving towards a new paradigm of collaboration The influence of current automotive trends on mobility business models and competitive advantage of traditional German OEMs written by Lisa Sobotta and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Southern Denmark (University of Southern Denmark), language: English, abstract: This thesis analyzes and evaluates current macro-environmental trends in the German automotive industry and their evolutionary impact on automotive business models and competitiveness of traditional German car manufacturers. To enhance the understanding of industry evolution and strategic change, the German automotive business is explored through the lens of market innovations. Drawing upon the industry evolution model of Henderson and Clark (1990), the impact of automotive market innovations on strategies of German OEMs with regard to inter-firm collaborations are classified and analyzed. For evaluation of motives and strategic fit in cross-industry collaborations, sources and key success factors of inter-firm competitive advantages are elaborated. Synthesizing and refining among others the theories of Barney (2007), Dyer & Singh (1999), and Williamson (1993), new resources as derived from inter-organizational relationships are depicted in terms of competitiveness and their relations to German car manufacturers are discussed. Identifying the red oceans and the blue oceans in the German automotive industry according to the business model theory of Kim and Mauborgne (2005), four scenarios for the strategic realignment of German OEMs in response to industry dynamics are formulated. Within this scope, modifications of business model elements are elaborated according to the strategy canvas of Osterwalder et al. (2005) and revisions of existing automotive business models are proposed. Having studied the business model concept as a possible integrator of traditional strategic perspectives on industry evolution and firm performance, the thesis concludes with the insight that in order to capitalize on the emerging automotive trends, German OEMs need to intensify qualitative partnerships as a new source of sustained competitive advantage. Advanced cross-industry collaborations opening up new business opportunities must be addressed by shift of corporate strategy and redefinition of business models for better realignment of firm resources to current industry-transforming parameters thus ensuring long-term profitable growth in an increasingly connected environment.

Book excerpt: Laux carefully examines how European factory owners emulated American success in production and sales between the wars, how the postwar market boom chipped away at American dominance of the industry, and how Japanese models in turn began to cut into the world market in the competitive 1980s. In this incisive overview, Laux determines that Europe's most successful automaking firms were generally those which identified a market and offered this market a product at a reasonable price.
