This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Commercial Practice Connected With the Export and Import Trade to and From Germany, the German Colonies, and the Countries Where German Is the Recognised Language of Commerce, Vol. 2 The commercial series of modern language handbooks is the first of its kind, and has been designed and written with a. View to aiding the maintenance and development of British commerce in foreign markets. The series is intended for the use of commercial students and traders. It deals with the French, German, and Spanish languages as they are applied in actual commerce, and practically the whole of the matter contained in the books is drawn from real business, the series of letters and the documents having been used in actual foreign trade transactions. The books are the result (a) of much educational experience in connection with a scheme of commercial education on the one hand, and, on the other hand, (b) of eighteen years of practical experience in connection with several large shipping houses both at home and abroad. Every endeavour has been made throughout to present the matter in such a manner that its influence may be thoroughly educational, if regarded as a mental training of a specialist type. Book excerpt: This comprehensively revised, updated and significantly extended edition introduces German film history from its beginnings to the present day, covering key periods and movements including early and silent cinema, Weimar cinema, Nazi cinema, the New German Cinema, the Berlin School, the cinema of migration, and moving images in the digital era. Contributions by leading international scholars are grouped into sections that focus on genre; stars; authorship; film production, distribution and exhibition; theory and politics, including women's and queer cinema; and transnational connections. Spotlight articles within each section offer key case studies, including of individual films that illuminate larger histories (Heimat, Downfall, The Lives of Others, The Edge of Heaven and many more); stars from Ossi Oswalda and Hans Albers, to Hanna Schygulla and Nina Hoss; directors including F.W. Murnau, Walter Ruttmann, Wim Wenders and Helke Sander; and film theorists including Siegfried Kracauer and Béla Balázs. The volume provides a methodological template for the study of a national cinema in a transnational horizon.

Book Everyday Life in the German Book Trade

Download or read book Everyday Life in the German Book Trade written by Pamela Eve Selwyn and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his popular book The Germans (1982), Stanford historian Gordon Craig remarked: &"When German intellectuals at the end of the eighteenth century talked of living in a Frederican age, they were sometimes referring not to the monarch in Sans Souci, but to his namesake, the Berlin bookseller Friedrich Nicolai.&" Such was the importance attributed to Nicolai&’s role in the intellectual life of his age by his own contemporaries. While long neglected by students of the period, who tended to accept the caricature of him as a philistine who failed to recognize Goethe&’s genius, Nicolai has experienced a resurgence of interest among scholars reexploring the German Enlightenment and the literary marketplace of the eighteenth century. This book, drawing upon Nicolai&’s large unpublished correspondence, rounds out the picture we have of Nicolai already as author and critic by focusing on his roles as bookseller and publisher and as an Aufk&ärer in the book trade.

Book The Politics of Literature in Nazi Germany

Download or read book The Politics of Literature in Nazi Germany written by Jan-Pieter Barbian and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most comprehensive account to date of literary politics in Nazi Germany and of the institutions, organizations and people who controlled German literature during the Third Reich. Barbian details a media dictatorship-involving the persecution and control of writers, publishers and libraries, but also voluntary assimilation and pre-emptive self-censorship-that began almost immediately under the National Socialists, leading to authors' forced declarations of loyalty, literary propaganda, censorship, and book burnings. Special attention is given to Nazi regulation of the publishing industry and command over all forms of publication and dissemination, from the most presitigious publishing houses to the smallest municipal and school libraries. Barbian also shows that, although the Nazis censored books not in line with Party aims, many publishers and writers took advantage of loopholes in their system of control. Supporting his work with exhaustive research of original sources, Barbian describes a society in which everybody who was not openly opposed to it, participated in the system, whether as a writer, an editor, or even as an ordinary visitor to a library.
