Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Air Force in the Great War For this purpose much new material will be em ployed, and I shall reveal to the world many things which hitherto have been guarded as official secrets. With the aid and criticism of others it will be possible not only to outline essentials, but also to place events in their order of merit or importance. Furthermore, we may bring about an appreciation of those methods which solved for our Air Force the many problems of organisation and design, and piloted it through so many grave crises. To the rising generation, upon whom lies the burden of carrying out the plans for that future aerial development which is to be the harbinger of peace and unity among the nations, perhaps this book may prove a source of enthusiasm and inspiration. In time to come, those who turn these pages may re member with a thrill of gratitude that during the bitter, bloody struggle for the mastery of the air was laid the foundation of peaceful aerial navigation. Book excerpt: "But Echevarria disputes this traditional view and convincingly shows that these theorists - Boguslawski, Goltz, Schlieffen, Hoening, and their American and European counterparts - were not the architects of outmoded theories. In fact, they duly appreciated the implications of the vast advances in modern weaponry (as well as in transportation and communications) and set about finding solutions that would restore offensive maneuver to the battlefield."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major Georg Paul Neumann was a former German Air Force officer who had served in the Great War. He produced his outstanding survey of the German Air Force in 1920 while the events were still recent history. He was able to draw on his own experience and his contacts to compile a large number of personal accounts from officers and men who had so recently fought in the cause. The result is an accurate, faithful and comprehensive review of the aircraft, personnel and organisation of the force which began life in 1910 as the Imperial German Army Air Service and ended the war as the Luftstreitkrfte. This comprehensive and compelling review includes a series of primary sources dealing with some of the unusual and lesser known aspects of the Luftstreitkrfte including a gripping account of defending a Zeppelin against attack by British fighters.Major Neumann's indispensable work has never been surpassed and this English language translation is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the realities of the war in the air in the Great War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in the Air, Vol. 3: Being the Story of the Part Played in the Great War by the Royal Air Force The air - raid maps which accompany the volume are printed as they were compiled during the war, with the exception that the author has been able to identify all the military airships, about which we were often uncertain, and to confirm the identity, in a very few doubtful instances, of naval airships. Where a study of the German records has indicated a possible minor inaccuracy in the maps, a note has been added. The paths of the airships are shown in colour on some of the maps. This has been done for clarity, and the colours have no other significance. In this volume the author is concerned with the activities of the airships in their attacks on Great Britain. He was, however, impressed by the records of the great amount of reconnaissance and other work accomplished by naval airships over the North Sea. The reader should remember that the air raids were a part only of the opera tions of the German naval airship fleet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in the Air, Vol. 4: Being the Story of the Part Played in the Great War by the Royal Air Force A point of interest, which a study of the air reports has revealed for the first time, is that when the German offensive opened on the lt of March 1918, the fog on the front of the Third Army was not so dense as along that of the Fifth Army on its right. While the happenings on the Fifth Army front were almost entirely obscured from the air in the morning, some of the observers who flew over the Third Army front saw and reported a fair amount. In other words, ground visibility, on which the defence schemes so largely depended, varied, and this must be taken into account when the varying fortunes of the defending troops are under consideration. Book The German Air Force in the Great War

Download or read book The German Air Force in the Great War written by Georg Paul Neumann and published by . This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany's battle for the skies The Great War was, of course, the first conflict in which mankind took to the air to any significant degree. Powered flight added a new dimension to reconnaissance and the delivery of ordinance. The need to prevent both brought about the evolution of the fighter plane as all the protagonists of the First World War embraced aerial warfare. This book is an overview of the German Air Force; it discusses all types of aircraft from observation balloons and airships to aeroplanes employed by land based and naval forces. The activities of the German Air Force at war is considered in all the theatres in which it saw service and the text concludes with consideration of anti-aircraft and ground defensive measures. A good overview and recommended. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in the Air, Vol. 5: Being the Story of the Part Played in the Great War by the Royal Air Force Again, the first battle of Gaza, the failure of which changed the aspect of the campaign in Palestine, was lost mainly because the German air observers gave an empha tic warning to the Turkish command of the impending British attack. The military student who studies the dis positions of the Turkish forces before changes were made as a result of the air reports may find it difficult to believe that the battle could have been lost if the original Turkish dispositions had been maintained. When the third battle of Gaza, prelude to the fall of Jerusalem, was fought, the Royal Flying Corps had local air superiority. The success of General Allenby's brilliant plan depended upon sur prise. The British pilots had the equipment which enabled them to play their allotted part in the preliminary efforts by which surprise was achieved. One German aeroplane which, helped by patches of cloud, eluded the British patrolling aircraft and closely reconnoitred the British area just when the concentration for the battle had been completed, was shot down on its homeward journey, and the observer's report, of vital military importance, never reached the enemy command. These instances are of a kind which may serve to show why it has been necessary to examine the campaigns in some detail.
