Book The Georgia Davis Thrillers 1 6 BOX SET

Download or read book The Georgia Davis Thrillers 1 6 BOX SET written by Libby Fischer Hellmann and published by The Red Herrings Press. This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 1205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georgia Davis made her first appearance, a cameo really, in the second Ellie Foreman novel, A Picture of Guilt. She was a cop then. I expanded her role in An Image of Death (Ellie #3). I knew by then that one day she would have her own series—I just had to wait for the right story. That story was Easy Innocence, her first case as a Private Investigator. It's about high school girls and how far they will go to be accepted by their peers. Georgia is cautious. She's a loner, and she has baggage. While Ellie would love to go out to lunch with and give you TMI about herself, Georgia won't take a lunch break. The Ellie books have a dry sense of humor (at least I hope so), but the Georgia books? Not so much—Georgia is a serious person. She is driven partly by injustice, partly by her childhood, and partly because she can't bear to see people , especially young women, in pain. Georgia has plenty of stories to tell, and six of them make up this series, all set in Chicago and the suburbs. They’re darker than the Ellie books, because Georgia is a darker personality. Abandoned by her mother when she was young, her alcoholic father raised her with a stern hand. In fact, Georgia's arc over the series has been to “lighten up,” forgive, and find the joy she so richly deserves. Watch her develop her PI skills, and her humanity in The Georgia Davis PI Series. If you love Tess Gerritsen, Karin Slaughter, and Lisa Gardner, you'll love Libby Hellmann, author of Compulsively Readable Thrillers. * Get the first Georgia Davis thriller, Easy Innocence, FREE.

Download or read book The Ellie Foreman Mysteries Box Set of Six written by Libby Fischer Hellmann and published by The Red Herrings Press. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 1891 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Her life may be in shambles, but Ellie Foreman can’t resist a good mystery. Even one that risks far more than her career. WHO IS ELLIE FOREMAN? If you’re just meeting me, hello. I’m Ellie Foreman and I produce documentary films and videos in Chicago. People tell me I’m too curious for my own good, because I sometimes investigate crimes and murders as well. The problem is that in each of the 6 thrillers, the suspense ramps up and puts me in life-threatening situations. Or, as has happened, my daughter’s or my father’s life is jeopardized. I cherish my family and promised them that in the future I would walk away from a case if anything remotely smelled dangerous. I tried. I really did. It didn't work. I can’t understand why they don’t believe me. "A masterful blend of history, politics, and suspense. Publishers Weekly It might be because of the 6 novels in this Box Set. When you read them, you’ll discover, along with me, secrets from the past that have affected the present. You’ll question suspects from Chicago to Eastern Europe and China, and travel from the plush corridors of the Greenbrier Resort to Chicago’s Lawndale, once ground zero for riots. In each story you’ll find nail-biting suspense along with my dry sense of humor… you'll stay up way too late, unable to rest until you too know who “did it.” "Complicated, Fascinating. Hellmann has a beautifully tuned ear... which makes many of her scenes seriously funny." Chicago Tribune I hope you’ll find, as I do, that my friends, like Susan and Fouad, are the balm every woman needs to keep her balance, both physical and mental. And I hope you’ll share the unconditional love I feel for my daughter and my father. My ex-husband? Not so much. When you’ve finished the Box Set, let me know. We can go out to lunch and… talk. I won’t try to talk you into anything dangerous. Really. I promise. Enjoy the 6 Ellie Foreman Mysteries from Award-winning author of Compulsively Readable Thrillers, Libby Fischer Hellmann. Titles include: An Eye For Murder A Picture of Guilt An Image of Death A Shot To Die For Jump Cut Virtually Undetectable

Book Doubleback Female PI Finds Kidnapping is Just the Beginning

Download or read book Doubleback Female PI Finds Kidnapping is Just the Beginning written by Libby Fischer Hellmann and published by The Red Herrings Press. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doubleback is #2 in the Georgia Davis PI Series Little Molly Messenger is kidnapped on a sunny June morning. Three days later she's returned, apparently unharmed. Molly's mother, Chris, is so grateful to have her daughter back that she's willing to overlook the odd circumstances. A few days later, the brakes go out on Chris's car and Chris is killed. An accident? Maybe. "Libby Hellmann knows how to reel in a reader, and she does it expertly in Doubleback. One of the tensest opening scenes ever written is just the introduction to a true puzzler of a thriller." Tess Gerritsen, NYT Bestselling author of The Keepsake Except that it turns out that Chris, the IT manager at a large Chicago bank, may have misappropriated three million dollars. Not convinced that his daughter is safe, Molly's father hires Private Investigator Georgia Davis to follow the money and investigate Chris's death. "Hellmann’s new book is one tough cookie. She has combined her two protagonists into a strong and moving novel. Hellmann proves she can stand up to peer pressure." Dick Adler, January Magazine The Rap Sheet Doubleback, the sequel to the acclaimed Easy Innocence, reunites PI Georgia Davis with filmmaker Ellie Foreman. The two women track leads from Northern Wisconsin to an Arizona border town, where illegal immigrants, smuggled drugs, and an independent contractor called Delton Security come into play. Georgia and Ellie go to great lengths to find the truth, and Georgia discovers that you can cross a line, but sometimes you have to double back. "Doubleback moves with twists, insightful juxtapositions, and many layers. Hellmann doesn’t need to ‘doubleback.’ She’s indisputably crossed the line into the realm of great crime fiction writers." Crimespree Magazine If you love Tess Gerritsen, Karin Slaughter, and Lisa Gardner, you'll love the Compulsively Readable Thrillers featuring strong women by award-winning author Libby Fischer Hellmann.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of its kind, Doubly Erased is a comprehensive study of the rich tradition of LGBTQ themes and characters in Appalachian novels, memoirs, poetry, drama, and film. Appalachia has long been seen as homogenous and tradition-bound. Allison E. Carey helps to remedy this misunderstanding, arguing that it has led to LGBTQ Appalachian authors being doubly erased—routinely overlooked both within United States literature because they are Appalachian and within the Appalachian literary tradition because they are queer. In exploring motifs of visibility, silence, storytelling, home, food, and more, Carey brings the full significance and range of LGBTQ Appalachian literature into relief. Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina and Alison Bechdel's Fun Home are considered alongside works by Maggie Anderson, doris davenport, Jeff Mann, Lisa Alther, Julia Watts, Fenton Johnson, and Silas House, as well as filmmaker Beth Stephens. While primarily focused on 1976 to 2020, Doubly Erased also looks back to the region's literary "elders," thoughtfully mapping the place of sexuality in the lives and works of George Scarbrough, Byron Herbert Reece, and James Still.

Book The Seven Beauties of Science Fiction

Download or read book The Seven Beauties of Science Fiction written by Istvan Csicsery-Ronay and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major critical work from one of the preeminent voices in science fiction scholarship reframes the genre as a way of understanding today’s world. As the application of technoscience increasingly transforms every aspect of life, science fiction has become an essential mode of imagining the horizons of possibility. Though the broad scope of science fiction may vary in artistic quality and sophistication, it shares a desire to imagine a collective future for the human species and the world. A strikingly high proportion of today’s films, commercial art, popular music, video games, and non-genre fiction are what Csicsery-Ronay calls “science fictional” —stimulating science-fictional habits of mind. We no longer treat science fiction as merely a genre-engine producing formulaic effects, but as a mode of awareness, which frames experiences as if they were aspects of science fiction. The Seven Beauties of Science Fiction describes science fiction as a constellation of seven diverse cognitive attractions that are particularly formative of science-fictionality. These are the “seven beauties” of the title: fictive neology, fictive novums, future history, imaginary science, the science-fictional sublime, the science-fictional grotesque, and the Technologiade, or the epic of technoscience’s development into a global regime.

Book Horror at the Drive In

Download or read book Horror at the Drive In written by Gary D. Rhodes and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drive-in movie theaters and the horror films shown at them during the 1950s, 60s, and early 70s may be somewhat outdated, but they continue to enthrall movie buffs today. More than just fodder for the satirical cannons of Joe Bob Briggs and Mystery Science Theatre 3000, they appeal to knowledgeable fans and film scholars who understand their influence on American popular culture. This book is a collection of eighteen essays by various scholars on the classic drive-in horror film experience. Those in Section One emphasize the roles of the drive-in theater in the United States--and its cultural cousin, Australia. Section Two examines how horror operated at the drive-in, the rhetoric used in coming attraction trailers, horror film premieres at drive-ins, double features, and the preproduction, production, and marketing of Last House on the Left. Section Three addresses the effects of the Vietnam War and counter-culture on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the Cold War on Cat Women of the Moon. Section Four explores gender issues and sexuality, two of the most common and most important subjects of horror film analysis. Section Five covers drive-in culture via Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte, 2000 Maniacs, and the films of Mario Bava. Section Six investigates a variety of issues, such as the drive-in horror film's embrace of DNA, the use of cinematic form to create a non-Hollywood look in Wizard of Gore, and the many different prints and running times of I Drink Your Blood.

Book Birthing Black Mothers

Download or read book Birthing Black Mothers written by Jennifer C. Nash and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Birthing Black Mothers Black feminist theorist Jennifer C. Nash examines how the figure of the “Black mother” has become a powerful political category. “Mothering while Black” has become synonymous with crisis as well as a site of cultural interest, empathy, fascination, and support. Cast as suffering and traumatized by their proximity to Black death—especially through medical racism and state-sanctioned police violence—Black mothers are often rendered as one-dimensional symbols of tragic heroism. In contrast, Nash examines Black mothers’ self-representations and public performances of motherhood—including Black doulas and breastfeeding advocates alongside celebrities such as Beyoncé, Serena Williams, and Michelle Obama—that are not rooted in loss. Through cultural critique and in-depth interviews, Nash acknowledges the complexities of Black motherhood outside its use as political currency. Throughout, Nash imagines a Black feminist project that refuses the lure of locating the precarity of Black life in women and instead invites readers to theorize, organize, and dream into being new modes of Black motherhood.
