Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of the South Wales Coal-Field, Vol. 6: The Country Around Bridgend; Being an Account of the Region Comprised in Sheets 261, 262 of the Map The country around Bridgend, which is described in this the Sixth Part of the Memoir on the Geology of the South Wales Coal Field, is illustrated in Sheet 261-2 of the New Series One-inch Map. The area is occupied for the most part by Lower Lias, and by the Rhaetic and Keuper subdivisions of the Trias, but it includes a small part of the South Crop of the Coal Field and numerous inliers of Carboniferous Limestone which project through the Secondary strata. The original survey was made by Sir H. T. De la Beche, Sir W. E. Logan, D. H. Williams, W. T. Aveline, and T. E. James on the Old Series One-inch Maps 20, 36, and 37, which were published about the year 1845. The separation of the Rhaetic strata and a revision of the area south of the Coalfield were begun by H. W. Bristow in 1864, and completed by Mr. H. B. Woodward in 1871. The revised edition was published in 1873. The re-survey was made on the six-inch scale under the superintendence of Mr. Strahan and was published in 1901. The western half of the map was surveyed by Mr. Tiddeman, the eastern half by Mr. Cantrill, with the exception of the northeastern margin which was surveyed by Mr. Strahan. The present volume includes the description of the eastern half by Mr. Cantrill and of the western half by Mr. Strahan, based on the notes left by Mr. Tiddeman on his retirement from the staff. Mr. Woodward supplies an account of the Liassic and Rhaetic tracts which were examined by him for the purposes of the General Memoir on the Lias of England and Wales. The principal changes made in the map as the result of the re-survey consist in the extension of the Lias of Cowbridge over a district formerly thought to be occupied by Old Red Sandstone, the discovery of further inliers of Carboniferous Limestone in the Lias near Wick, and the distinction of the litoral from the normal type of Lias throughout the whole area. The Old Red Sandstone includes, in its upper part, some quartzitic and pebbly grits; the whole, so far as exposed, appears to correspond in character to the Brownstone subdivision, but in the absence of fossils it cannot be definitely referred to either Upper or Lower Old Red Sandstone. The Carboniferous Limestone maintains the same general character as in the Cardiff district. Thick but impersistent limestones appear locally in the Lower Limestone Shales. The Millstone Grit is covered for the most part by Secondary Rocks. It consists of shales with subordinate sandstones, and belongs therefore to the type which characterises the South Crop rather than to that of the north side of the Coal Field.
