Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of the Country Near Sidmouth and Lyme Regis The area to be described in this Memoir is included in Sheets 326 and 340 of the Geological Survey Map. Devon claims by far the greater portion, with the market towns of Axminster, Honiton and Ottery St. Mary, and the watering-places of Sid mouth and Seaton. To Dorset belongs the eastern border, with the seaport of Lyme Regis; while a small portion of Somerset, with the hamlet of Chilson, lies along the right bank of the Axe on the north-eastern margin. The total land-area represented on the map amounts to about 184 square miles, and the coast line extends for about 20 miles, from Otterton Point to Black Ven near Lyme Regis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of Sidmouth and of South-Eastern Devon As this account of the Geology of Sidmouth and the surrounding district is purposed to he of a local nature, it is not necessary to enter upon the subject generally as a science. Assuming, therefore, that our readers may already be possessed of at least some insight into its acquaintanceship, we shall mainly discuss certain geological changes which have taken place in the south-eastern part of the county of Devon, how these changes have wrought upon the external features of the country, and then direct attention to 'such circumstances as may be of more particular interest. Book The Geology of the Country Between Wellington and Chard

Download or read book The Geology of the Country Between Wellington and Chard written by W. A. E. Ussher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of the Country Between, Wellington and Chard The Map and Memoir belong to a set of three sheets of which tho areas were re-surveyed many years ago on the old series one-inch maps. One composite sheet (826 and 340) with accompanying Memoir on "The Geology of the country near Sidmouth and Lyme Regis" has already been published. The present, sheet, 311, adjoins it on the north, and takes in the country between Wellington and Chard, with the famous Green-sand area of the Black Down Hills. The original one-inch map, Sheet 21, included tho whole of the area of the present sheet, and was surveyed by De la Beche, and Surveyed probably in 1833. The re-survey was carried out between the years 1870 and 1876, under the immediate superintendence of Mr H. W. Bristow, with Sir R. I. Murchison, and subsequently Sir A. C. Ramsay, as Director-General. The greater part of the area was surveyed by Mr. Ussher; the remaining portion cast of the Yarty Valley, and including the country around Chard and IIminster, was surveyed by Mr. Woodward, with the assistance of Mr. Clement Reid when he joined the Geological Survey in 1874. The principal additions to the map are in tho sub-divisions of the New Red rocks, and the insertion of the Rhætic Beds and superficial deposits. Although the New Red conglomerates had been indicated on tho old map, no boundary had been drawn between the Keuper Marls and underlying sandstones, nor wore the divisions below the conglomerates indicated. This work was done by Mr. Ussher. Mr. Woodward, who has edited the chapters on the Rhætic Beds and Lias, described the Liassic area in the Memoir on the Jurassic Rocks of Great Britain, and he re-examined and revised some portions of the boundary of the Middle Lias and Greensand in 1903. Mr. Jukes-Browne in 1892 likewise examined the Cretaceous area near Chard when preparing his Memoir on the Cretaceous Ròcks, and then made a sketch-map of some portions of the ground on the six-inch scale, to which reference is made on p. 43.
