Book Geology of Building Stones

Download or read book Geology of Building Stones written by John Allen Howe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Allen Howe's book, The Geology of Building Stones, written in 1910, was the first major reference work to feature information on the considerable range of building stones which were being used in the UK and which were still being quarried at that time. This important and useful publication, now reprinted by Donhead, offers very detailed information on the appearance and qualities of the various types of stone being used at that time, including granite, sandstones, limestones and other lesser known building stones, specific to certain geographical areas. It also includes a good introduction to the effects of stone decay, in particular the problems of pollution, frost and organic growth in the breakdown of stone. His chapter on testing of stone was very much ahead of its time, since nearly a century later Britain is only now starting to obtain its first standard tests for building stone, in the form of European Standards. This book will be a valuable source of reference for conservators, architects, surveyors, engineers and anyone seeking to identify stone in old or historic buildings.

Book British and Foreign Building Stones Classic Reprint

Download or read book British and Foreign Building Stones Classic Reprint written by John Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British and Foreign Building Stones Specimens of Building Stones brought together to form a collection are usually arranged according to their lithological character irrespective of their age. Possibly this method may have been found to be the most convenient for architects and builders, other wise it would not have been so generally adopted. Bearing in mind however that the present collection is primarily for the use of students of geology at Cambridge University, it has been thought that the specimens will be more helpful to them, if they are arranged in stratigraphical order, hence this method has been adopted, except in the case of the igneous rocks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Stones and Clays: Their Origin, Characters and Examination The present volume may in some sense be considered as an outgrowth of the author's previous work on cementing materials, for it deals with natural materials which are closely related, either as constituents or as competitors, to the manufactured products therein discussed. It may be noted that little space has been devoted to a de scription of the local distribution of building stones and clays. The inclusion of such data, relative to products which are nat urally so common and so widely distributed, tends to convert a general treatise into a mere directory of the quarry and clay product industries. The extensive reference lists which are pre sented, however, will serve to point out where information re garding the stone or clays of any particular state may be found. Attention should also be directed to the chapters relative to the examination and valuation of clay and stone properties. So far as known to the writer, most of the material therein pre sented has not been touched upon in earlier works on these subjects. Book The Geology of the Road Building Stones of Massachusetts

Download or read book The Geology of the Road Building Stones of Massachusetts written by Nathaniel Southgate Shaler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of the Road-Building Stones of Massachusetts: With Some Consideration of Similar Materials From Other Parts of the United States Of each deposit which has been examined, samples were selected in tended to represent the average character of the material there found, and a lot of about 25 pounds was taken to be used in the experiments to determine the resistance of the stone. This was collected in bits of from 1 to 3 cubic inches in bulk, so as' to obtain a better average of quality. At the same time specimens were chosen for display in a cabinet and for the study of the petrographic character of the stone. Where the material consisted of glacial bowlders and pebbles, which in a large part of Massachusetts afford the only conveniently accessi ble road stone, an effort was made to obtain an average sample which would fairly illustrate the quality of the material that must be employed in road construction. Experience has Shown that while it would be pos sible by the exercise of moderate care in selecting the bits greatly to improve the quality of the erratics used in the crushers which supply the broken stone, it is difficult to induce the men who are employed in the work to take the needed pains. Book The Geology of Building Stones

Download or read book The Geology of Building Stones written by John Allen Howe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of Building Stones This is the fourth volume of a series of works treating of economic geology, the previous books having been devoted to 'The Geology of Coal and Coal-Mining,' 'The Geology of Ore Deposits,' and 'The Geology of Water-Supply.' A work on 'The Geology of Building Stones,' dealing with the great advance made in their study both at home and abroad of recent years, was much needed, and the author of the present work, under whose direction as Curator of the Museum of Practical Geology in London the collection of building stones in that museum assumed its present shape, is peculiarly qualified for the task of writing the work. Book Building Stones and Clays

Download or read book Building Stones and Clays written by Charles H. Richardson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Stones and Clays: A Handbook for Architects and Engineers The present volume is an outgrowth of the authors needs in his own classroom. The matter is essentially that presented to his classes in a brief course in the College of Applied Science for Civil Engineers, in the College of Fine Arts for Architects and in the College of Liberal Arts for students of Economic Geology. The work has been multigaphed, bound and used as a manuscript textbook. It is now published for the greater advantage to his own students, and with the hope that it may be useful to others. The object has been to furnish an elementary knowledge of the essential minerals in building stones and the objectionable minerals they sometimes contain; to show the chief characteristics of the more important building stones; to give their geographical distribution and range in compressive strength; to impart some information as to the physical and chemical properties of clays and the products that may be manufactured from them. The author has attempted to state the essential facts and explanations as clearly and simply as possible and to observe a logical order and a due proportion between different parts. The larger amount of space is given to each type of building stone in the state where it is the most abundant. Great care has been taken in classifying and arranging the subject matter that it may follow the order as closely as possible of the various lecture courses on building stones and clays in our different colleges and universities. The author wishes to express here his great indebtedness for constant assistance in the preparation of this work to his colleagues on the University Faculty: Professors T. C. Hopkins, Burnett Smith, A. E. Brainerd, B. W. Clark and H. G. Turner. Also his greater indebtedness to Prof. G. H. Chadwick of the University of Rochester for his careful checking of results and verifying data, and to Prof. W. F. Prouty of the University of Alabama for his contribution on the Marbles of Alabama. The stones of the walls have been chipped and dressed with chisels and hammers the marble of the chimney-pieces has been smoothed and polished; the slates have been split into thin plates. But some of these building mate rials have undergone much greater changes. The bricks, for instance, were originally soft clay which has been hardened by being baked in ovens. The mortar by which the stones or bricks of the walls are held together. Has been obtained by burning limestone in kilns. The iron used in the house was first of all in the state of a dull red or brown stone, which had to be roasted and melted before the clear bright metal came out of it. I 3. But although these various stones differ so much from each other, they agree in one point - they come from underneath the surface of the ground. If you could trace back each of them to the place from which it came you would find that the freestone and limestone were taken out of quarries, perhaps not very far away, that the slates were cut out of the side of some hill, probably in Wales, that the marble was quarried out of some distant moun tain, possibly in Italy, that the coal was dug out of mines, sunk deep into the earth in some part of Bri tain, and that the bricks were made from clay dug out of pits on some low ground in your neighbourhood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stones: For Building and Decoration The work herewith presented is based upon the author's handbook and catalogue of the collection of building and ornamental stones in the United States National Museum at Washington. It differs from that work, however, in many important particulars, several new chapters having been added, others rewritten and the whole so far as possible brought down to date. A portion of the added matter is essentially the same, though in a somewhat different form, as originally appeared in the columns of Stone, the American Architect, the Scientific American Supplement, and other of our industrial journals. The writer's experience in preparing the extensive collection in the National Museum, at Washington, as well as its partial duplicate in the American Museum in New York City, has afforded him ample opportunity for becoming acquainted with the quarry products of the country at large, while extensive field trips, particularly in the eastern and extreme western United States, have given him a practical insight into the resources of the regions as well as some knowledge concerning the usual methods of quarrying and working. That there is a demand for a comprehensive and not too technical a work on this subject has been emphatically impressed upon the writer many times during the past few years. How far the pages herewith presented shall supply this demand, it is left for the public to decide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
