Download or read book Geyser Basins of Yellowstone written by Dr. N. Genean Dunn and Thomas D. Dunn and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yellowstone National Park contains over half the world's active geysers, with more than 700 within its 3,472 square miles. The most famous geyser is Old Faithful, named in 1870 during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition. In 1871, the US Geological and Geographical Survey, led by Dr. F.V. Hayden, reached the Upper Geyser Basin. In just over a day, the explorers witnessed eruptions of many geysers still seen today, including Giantess, Beehive, Grotto, Castle, and Old Faithful. Yellowstone became the first National Park in 1872. Since then, visitors have come in increasing numbers to witness the unique geysers, numerous wildlife, and spectacular scenery.
Download or read book Hydrothermal Processes Above the Yellowstone Magma Chamber written by Lisa A. Morgan and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Home to more than 10,000 thermal features, Yellowstone has experienced over 20 large hydrothermal explosions producing craters from 100 to over 2500 meters in diameter during the past 16,000 years. Using new mapping, sampling, and analysis techniques, this volume documents a broad spectrum of ages and geologic settings for these events and considers additional processes and alternative triggering mechanisms that have not been explored in previous studies. Although large hydrothermal explosions are rare on the human time scale, the potential for future explosions in Yellowstone is not insignificant, and events large enough to create a 100-m-wide crater might be expected every 200 years. This work presents information useful for determining the timing, distribution, and possible causes of these events in Yellowstone, which will aid in the planning of monitoring strategies and the anticipation of hydrothermal explosions."--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Volcanic Lakes written by Dmitri Rouwet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to give an overview on the present state of volcanic lake research, covering topics such as volcano monitoring, the chemistry, dynamics and degassing of acidic crater lakes, mass-energy-chemical-isotopic balance approaches, limnology and degassing of Nyos-type lakes, the impact on the human and natural environment, the eruption products and impact of crater lake breaching eruptions, numerical modeling of gas clouds and lake eruptions, thermo-hydro-mechanical and deformation modeling, CO2 fluxes from lakes, volcanic lakes observed from space, biological activity, continuous monitoring techniques, and some aspects more. We hope to offer an updated manual on volcanic lake research, providing classic research methods, and point towards a more high-tech approach of future volcanic lake research and continuous monitoring.

Download or read book Gold and Other Minor Elements Associated with the Hot Springs and Geysers of Yellowstone National Park Wyoming Supplemented with Data from Steamboat Springs Nevada written by Donald Edward White and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A commonly held theory of the origin of epithermal ore deposits relates Au, Ag, Hg, As, Sb, Tl, and other "volatile" elements to "fossil" hot-spring systems that transported and deposited these metallic elements close to the ground surface existing at the time. In the early 1970's, an emission-spectrographic method using short-wavelength radiation (SWR) was developed for use in the analysis of these "volatile" elements. This method was applied to 125 samples of rock and hot-spring chemical precipitates from Yellowstone National Park and 43 samples from Steamboat Springs, Nev. The results of those analyses are presented here. Recently, other, more sensitive methods for the analyses of gold and volatile elements have been developed and (or) become less expensive, but these methods generally have not yet been applied to Yellowstone samples. -- First paragraph.
Download or read book Volcanic Tourist Destinations written by Patricia Erfurt-Cooper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-08-09 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book addresses the pressing need for up-to-date literature on volcanic destinations (active and dormant) and their role in tourism worldwide in chapters and case studies. The book presents a balanced view about the volcano-based tourism sector worldwide and discusses important issues such as the different volcanic hazards, potential for disasters and accidents and safety recommendations for visitors. Individual chapters and case studies are contributed by a number of internationally based co-authors, with expertise in geology, risk management, environmental science and other relevant disciplines associated with volcanoes. Also covered are risk aspects of volcano tourism such as risk perception, risk management and public safety in volcanic environments. Discussions of the demand for volcano tourism, including geotourism and adventure tourism as well as some historical facts related to volcanoes, with case studies of interesting socio-cultural settings are included.
