Book The Geological Story of Kansas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geological Story of Kansas This Geological Story of Kansas has been prepared for both the student and the general reader. The student will find the conclusions and the statements of general principles of service while doing research work in geology and while making a final review of the subject; and it is hoped that the general reader will find this story helpful to him in reaching a better understanding of the geological history of Kansas. The myriad observations on which this story is based could not be given in the limits of this booklet, nor, indeed, of a hundred booklets. The proper place for the record of such observations is in the field note-book, and in the great reference books prepared by State surveys. Incorporated in a story, they would have little significance, except to their author. All others would find them dry and uninteresting. To be appreciated, understood and enjoyed, the facts of observation must be gathered by each one, either from Nature's storehouses or from the reference books of libraries, just as fast as one needs them in formulating conclusions and no faster. Original research work in the field takes much more time than research work in libraries, and it is therefore wise to combine the two methods of gathering information; but either should not be used to the exclusion of the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two decades after its first publication, Roadside Kansas remains the premier guide to the geology, natural resources, landmarks, and landscapes along nine of the Sunflower State's major highways. During that span, however, many aspects of the Kansas landscape changed: the growth of some towns and near disappearance of others, the expansion of highways, the development of industry. Even the rocks themselves changed in places as erosion took its relentless toll. More broadly, there have been changes in the science of geology. This new edition reflects all of these changes and thoroughly updates the previous edition in ways that reinforce its preeminent status. Covering more than 2,600 miles, Buchanan and McCauley organize their book by highway and milepost markers, so that modern-day explorers can follow the road logs easily, learning about the land as they travel through the state. Featuring more than 100 photographs, drawings, and maps, the book also provides deft descriptions of fascinating contemporary and historical features to be seen all across Kansas. Especially in an economic era that has encouraged all of us to travel closer to home, the new edition is sure to be a hit with families from Kansas and the region who decide to explore and learn more about the state and its distinctive wonders. They'll discover what Buchanan and McCauley have known for a long time: Kansas highways provide much more than passage to Colorado or some other state. They are destinations in their own right. Published for the Kansas Geological Survey

Book excerpt: The perfect glove-compartment companion, is a guide to the geology, natural resources, and landscapes along nine of the state's major highways. Covering more than 2,600 miles, Buchanan and McCauley have provided mile-by-mile descriptions of interesting features, both contemporary and historical, to be seen all across the state. The information is organized by highway, so that modern-day explorers can follow the road logs easily, learning about the land they travel through. Of the tradition of roadside geologic descriptions, Buchanan and McCauley write: "In some ways highways provide convenient access to geology because roads often cut through hills, exposing formations never seen before ... For many geologist, road construction is an occasion akin to Christmas or the Fourth of July." The nine highways, which criss-cross Kansas, were chosen for a variety of reasons. Some, like I-70, I-35, and the Kansas Turnpike, carry heavy traffic; some, like U.S. Highways 69 and 36, are the main highways in various parts of the state; others, like U.S. Highways 160 and 83, cut through some of the state's most interesting geology; and one, U.S. Highway 56, was picked because of its history--the road parallels the historic Santa Fe Trail for much of its route, passing the site of old forts and Indian battles. This unique guidebook combines geological, historical, and cultural information with more than 100 photographs, drawings, and maps. Presented in a refreshingly nontechnical way. It is sure to appeal to tourist and native Kansas alike.

Book Roadside Geology of Kansas

Download or read book Roadside Geology of Kansas written by James S. Aber and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Flyover Country no more. Fossils, badlands, and caprocks are scattered through the prairie, all there to be found with Roadside Geology of Kansas as your guide. A billion years of geologic history left zinc and lead deposits, salt beds, and oil buried beneath layers of limestone and shale, deposited in the many seas that inundated the continent. Finally, glaciers reconfigured stream drainages, left enormous boulders scattered about, and provided the windblown silt for excellent cropland. Nineteenth-century paleontologists flocked to the chalk outcrops of western Kansas to collect fossils of dinosaurs, mosasaurs, giant turtles, and more. Settlers used the rock they found at the surface to build houses, bridges, water towers, and churches, as well as stone fence posts that wouldn't burn during prairie wildfires. Guides for sixteen roads, including all the state's scenic, historic, and national byways, point out prominent landmarks such as Mushroom Rock, Pawnee Rock, Coronado Heights, and Mount Mitchell, along with more hidden geologic delights, such as kimberlite pipes, Rock City, and the source for Kansas amber. Informative sections detail the history of fossil collection in Kansas and the state's native-stone architecture, and colorful photographs, including many taken from aerial kites, illuminate the geologic history for all to see"--
