Book The Gentleman from Indiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gentleman from Indiana Classic Reprint written by Booth Tarkington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gentleman From Indiana On the station 'platforms therefire always two or three wooden packing-boxes, apparently marked for travel, but they are sacred from disturbance and remain on the platform forever; possibly the right train never comes along. They serve to enthrone a few station loafers, who look out from under their hat-brims at the faces in the car-windows with the languid scorn a permanent fixture always has for a transient, and the pity an American feels for a fellow-being who does not live in his town. Now and then the train passes a town built scatteringly about a court-house, with a mill or two humming near the tracks. This is a county-seat, and the inhabitants and the local papers refer to it confi dently as our city. The heart of the flat lands is a central area called Carlow County, and the county seat of Carlow is a town unhappily named in honor of its first settler, williamvplatt, who christened it with his blood. Natives of this place have sometimes re marked, easily, that'their city had a population of from five to six thousand souls. It is easy to forgive them for such statements; civic pride is a virtue. Book Print Culture Histories Beyond the Metropolis

Download or read book Print Culture Histories Beyond the Metropolis written by James J. Connolly and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-04-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together leading scholars of literature, history, library studies, and communications, Print Culture Histories Beyond the Metropolis rejects the idea that print culture necessarily spreads outwards from capitals and cosmopolitan cities and focuses attention to how the residents of smaller cities, provincial districts, rural settings, and colonial outposts have produced, disseminated, and read print materials. Too often print media has been represented as an engine of metropolitan modernity. Rather than being the passive recipients of print culture generated in city centres, the inhabitants of provinces and colonies have acted independently, as jobbing printers in provincial Britain, black newspaper proprietors in the West Indies, and library patrons in “Middletown,” Indiana, to mention a few examples. This important new book gives us a sophisticated account of how printed materials circulated, a more precise sense of their impact, and a fuller of understanding of how local contexts shaped reading experiences.

Book Eleanor H Porter s Pollyanna

Download or read book Eleanor H Porter s Pollyanna written by Roxanne Harde and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appearing first as a weekly serial in The Christian Herald, Eleanor H. Porter's Pollyanna was first published in book form in 1913. This popular story of an impoverished orphan girl who travels from America's western frontier to live with her wealthy maternal Aunt Polly in the fictional east coast town of Beldingsville went through forty-seven printings in seven years and remains in print today in its original version, as well as in various translations and adaptations. The story's enduring appeal lies in Pollyanna's sunny personality and in her glad game, her playful attempt to accentuate the positive in every situation. In celebration of its centenary, this collection of thirteen original essays examines a wide variety of the novel's themes and concerns, as well as adaptations in film, manga, and translation. In this edited collection on Pollyanna, internationally respected and emerging scholars of children's literature consider Porter's work from modern critical perspectives. Contributors focus primarily on the novel itself but also examine Porter's sequel, Pollyanna Grows Up, and the various film versions and translations of the novel. With backgrounds in children's literature, cultural and film studies, philosophy, and religious studies, these scholars extend critical thinking about Porter's work beyond the thematic readings that have dominated previous scholarship. In doing so, the authors approach the novel from theoretical perspectives that examine what happens when Pollyanna engages with the world around her—her community and the natural environment—exposing the implicit philosophical, religious, and nationalist ideologies of the era in which Pollyanna was written. The final section is devoted to studies of adaptations of Porter's protagonist.
