Book Eastern White Pine Dieback

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Edward Dantas Whitney
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019

  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book Eastern White Pine Dieback written by Thomas Edward Dantas Whitney and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) is experiencing novel symptoms of dieback and mortality throughout its range in North America. Recent studies have found that two organisms, a fungal pathogen (Caliciopsis pinea Peck) and a scale insect (Matsucoccus macrocicatrices Richards), have emerged in association with a canker disease, which is driving the symptoms of this dieback phenomenon. Little is known about this insect-pathogen complex and its relationship to its host, including the colonization tendencies of the insect and pathogen, the nativity of the insect, and the genetic diversity and structure of the host in the Southern Appalachians region. I quantified the incidence of scale insects and pathogenic cankers within trees and among size classes and found that colonization of both the insect and the pathogen was consistent with the patterns of dieback and mortality of P. strobus, adding support to the hypothesis that these organisms are responsible for dieback symptoms and mortality. I also developed microsatellite markers to evaluate the present genetic diversity and structure of M. macrocicatrices populations within a biogeographical framework. I found that this insect is native to all regions in North America, and I posit it has likely been co-occurring with P. strobus, its obligate host, since the last glacial maximum. Therefore, recent introductions and invasional processes likely did not contribute to the recent emergence of M. macrocicatrices and its novel association with pathogens and dieback symptoms. Lastly, I elucidated the genetic diversity and population structure of P. strobus in the understudied Southern Appalachians and found that populations in this region are highly variable but not more so than those in more northern latitudes. Although this important tree species faces new threats, its high genetic variation suggests it may also have a substantial amount of adaptive potential. My results and interpretations herein provide comprehensive and important foundational knowledge about the organisms involved in the eastern white pine dieback phenomenon. This research has built a framework for future investigations into (1) the mechanism(s) that allows M. macrocicatrices to facilitate C. pinea infection, (2) the reason(s) why M. macrocicatrices has recently emerged as a pest, and (3) the appropriate management and conservation strategies for P. strobus persistence in its native range.

Download or read book Population Genomics written by Om P. Rajora and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-07 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population genomics has revolutionized various disciplines of biology including population, evolutionary, ecological and conservation genetics, plant and animal breeding, human health, medicine and pharmacology by allowing to address novel and long-standing questions with unprecedented power and accuracy. It employs large-scale or genome-wide genetic information and bioinformatics to address various fundamental and applied aspects in biology and related disciplines, and provides a comprehensive genome-wide perspective and new insights that were not possible before. These advances have become possible due to the development of new and low-cost sequencing and genotyping technologies and novel statistical approaches and software, bioinformatics tools, and models. Population genomics is tremendously advancing our understanding the roles of evolutionary processes, such as mutation, genetic drift, gene flow, and natural selection, in shaping up genetic variation at individual loci and across the genome and populations; improving the assessment of population genetic parameters or processes such as adaptive evolution, effective population size, gene flow, admixture, inbreeding and outbreeding depression, demography, and biogeography; resolving evolutionary histories and phylogenetic relationships of extant, ancient and extinct species; understanding the genomic basis of fitness, adaptation, speciation, complex ecological and economically important traits, and disease and insect resistance; facilitating forensics, genetic medicine and pharmacology; delineating conservation genetic units; and understanding the genetic effects of resource management practices, and assisting conservation and sustainable management of genetic resources. This Population Genomics book discusses the concepts, approaches, applications and promises of population genomics in addressing most of the above fundamental and applied crucial aspects in a variety of organisms from microorganisms to humans. The book provides insights into a range of emerging population genomics topics including population epigenomics, landscape genomics, seascape genomics, paleogenomics, ecological and evolutionary genomics, biogeography, demography, speciation, admixture, colonization and invasion, genomic selection, and plant and animal domestication. This book fills a vacuum in the field and is expected to become a primary reference in Population Genomics world-wide.

Book Comparative and Evolutionary Genomics of Angiosperm Trees

Download or read book Comparative and Evolutionary Genomics of Angiosperm Trees written by Andrew Groover and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marking the change in focus of tree genomics from single species to comparative approaches, this book covers biological, genomic, and evolutionary aspects of angiosperm trees that provide information and perspectives to support researchers broadening the focus of their research. The diversity of angiosperm trees in morphology, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry has been described and cataloged by various scientific disciplines, but the molecular, genetic, and evolutionary mechanisms underlying this diversity have only recently been explored. Excitingly, advances in genomic and sequencing technologies are ushering a new era of research broadly termed comparative genomics, which simultaneously exploits and describes the evolutionary origins and genetic regulation of traits of interest. Within tree genomics, this research is already underway, as the number of complete genome sequences available for angiosperm trees is increasing at an impressive pace and the number of species for which RNAseq data are available is rapidly expanding. Because they are extensively covered by other literature and are rapidly changing, technical and computational approaches—such as the latest sequencing technologies—are not a main focus of this book. Instead, this comprehensive volume provides a valuable, broader view of tree genomics whose relevance will outlive the particulars of current-day technical approaches. The first section of the book discusses background on the evolution and diversification of angiosperm trees, as well as offers description of the salient features and diversity of the unique physiology and wood anatomy of angiosperm trees. The second section explores the two most advanced model angiosperm tree species (poplars and eucalypts) as well as species that are soon to emerge as new models. The third section describes the structural features and evolutionary histories of angiosperm tree genomes, followed by a fourth section focusing on the genomics of traits of biological, ecological, and economic interest. In summary, this book is a timely and well-referenced foundational resource for the forest tree community looking to embrace comparative approaches for the study of angiosperm trees.

While forests are studied mainly in temperate and tropical zones, in the light of current climate change, focusing on Mediterranean forests growing in semi-humid to semi-arid zones is more important than ever. This book will include mostly review chapters (and two outstanding case studies) contributed by leading scientists, foresters and managers, and will serve as a scientific textbook for students of biology, agriculture and forestry, researchers of ecology forestry and related fields, forest managers, policy and decision makers.

Book Biochemical Targets of Plant Bioactive Compounds

Download or read book Biochemical Targets of Plant Bioactive Compounds written by Gideon Polya and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-05-15 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When introduced to the human body, bioactive metabolites produced by plants for self defense bind to particular biochemical targets, most notably to proteins involved in signaling by hormones and neurotransmitters. This, essentially, is the basis for the effects of herbal medicine. While herbal medicine preparations may act by complex synergistic interactions, molecular explanations of herbal medicine efficacy and side effects ultimately require definition of the biochemical targets of individual plant bioactive constituents. Biochemical Targets of Plant Bioactive Compounds is a comprehensive and user-friendly reference guide to biochemical targets of plant defensive compounds. With 500 pages of tables, it presents a mine of succinctly summarized information relating to bioactive compound structures, plant sources, biochemical targets and physiological effects that can be readily accessed via chemical compound, plant genus, plant common name and subject indexes. With introductory chapters providing reviews of the structural diversity of plant defensive compounds and biochemistry, this book is an invaluable reference for biomedical professionals in the fields of alternative/complementary medicine, natural product chemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, and botany.

Book Biotechnology and Ecology of Pollen

Download or read book Biotechnology and Ecology of Pollen written by David L. Mulcahy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Recognition of the Forgotten Generation D. L. MULCAHyl Pollen was long believed to serve primarily a single function, that of delivering male gametes to the egge A secondary and generally overlooked value of pollen is that it serves to block the transmission of many defective alleles and gene combinations into the next generation. This latter function comes about simply because pollen tubes carrying defective haploid genotypes frequently fail to complete growth through the entire length of the style. However, the beneficial consequences of this pollen selection are diluted by the fact that the same deleterious genotypes are often transmitted through the egg at strictly mendelian frequencies (Khush, 1973). Gene expression in the pollen might thus at least appear to be a phenomenon of trivial consequence. Indeed, Heslop-Harrison (1979) rightly termed the gametophytic portion of the angiosperm life cycle, the "forgotten generation." This neglect, however, came about despite subtle but constant indications that pollen is the site of intense gene activity and selection. For example, Mok and Peloquin (1975) demonstrated that relatively heterozygous diploid pollen shows heterotic characteristics whereas relatively homozygous diploid pOllen does not. This was proof positive that genes are expressed (that is, transcribed and translated) in the pollen. 1 Department of Botany, University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA 01003, USA viii However, the implications for pollen biology of even this recent and well known study were not widely recognized.
