Book Oil Shale

Download or read book Oil Shale written by Anthony Andrews and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal interest in oil shale dates back to the early 20th century, when the Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves were set aside. Commercial interest followed during the 1960s. After a second oil embargo in the 1970s, Congress created a synthetic fuels program to stimulate large-scale commercial development of oil shale. Commercially backed oil shale projects ended in the early 1980s when oil prices began declining. High oil prices have revived the interest in oil shale. Contents of this report: Intro.; Geology and Production Technology of Oil Shale; History of Oil Shale Development; Incentives and Disincentives to Development; Policy Perspectives; Legislative History to 2006. Book The Fossil Fuel Revolution

Download or read book The Fossil Fuel Revolution written by Daniel J. Soeder and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fossil Fuel Revolution: Shale Gas and Tight Oil describes the remarkable new energy resources being obtained from shale gas and tight oil through a combination of directional drilling and staged hydraulic fracturing, opening up substantial new energy reserves for the 21st Century. The book includes the history of shale gas development, the technology used to economically recover hydrocarbons, and descriptions of the ten primary shale gas resources of the United States. International shale resources, environmental concerns, and policy issues are also addressed. This book is intended as a reference on shale gas and tight oil for industry members, undergraduate and graduate students, engineers and geoscientists. Provides a cross-cutting view of shale gas and tight oil in the context of geology, petroleum engineering, and the practical aspects of production Includes a comprehensive description of productive and prospective shales in one book, allowing readers to compare and contrast production from different shale plays Addresses environmental and policy issues and compares alternative energy resources in terms of economics and sustainability Features an extensive resource list of peer-reviewed references, websites, and journals provided at the end of each chapter

Book Oil Shale History Incentives and Policy

Download or read book Oil Shale History Incentives and Policy written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil shale is prevalent in the western states of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The resource potential of these shales is estimated to be the equivalent of 1.8 trillion barrels of oil in place. Retorted oil shale yields liquid hydrocarbons in the range of middle-distillate fuels, such as jet and diesel fuel. However, because oil shales have not proved to be economically recoverable, they are considered a contingent resource and not true reserves. It remains to be demonstrated whether an economically significant oil volume can be extracted under existing operating conditions. In comparison, Saudi Arabia reportedly holds proved reserves of 267 billion barrels. Federal interest in oil shale dates back to the early 20th Century, when the Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves were set aside. Out of World War II concerns for a secure oil supply, a Bureau of Mines program began research into exploiting the resource. Commercial interest followed during the 1960s. After a second oil embargo in the 1970s, Congress created a synthetic fuels program to stimulate largescale commercial development of oil shale and other unconventional resources. The federal program proved short-lived, and commercially backed oil shale projects ended in the early 1980s when oil prices began declining.

Download or read book Oil Shale Technology written by Sunggyu Lee and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-12-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the fundamental and engineering aspects of shale oil extraction, as well as the mathematical clarification of the complex transport mechanisms involved in oil shale pyrolysis. The influence of the chemical and physical environment on the enhancement of oil yield is explained, and ex situ and in situ technologies are reviewed and compared. The discussion on ex situ shale oil extraction includes both thermal and chemical extraction techniques such as retorting, solvent, and supercritical extraction. Parallels are drawn between the processes available for recovering and using other fossil fuel sources, such as coal and tar sands, and oil shale. In addition to covering the characteristics of oil shale, Oil Shale Technology summarizes the physical and chemical properties of shale oil obtained from various deposits around the world. The influence of the retorting process on the properties of the resulting oil shale is discussed, as are standardized techniques for determining these properties. Engineers, geologists, chemists, chemical engineers, and other researchers in the petroleum and chemical industries should consider this book an important reference resource.

Download or read book Oil Shales written by Miryam Glikson-Simpson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides thorough knowledge and detailed information of oil shales using a range of conventional and unconventional techniques and methodologies combined to elucidate the composition of oil shale deposits. As these rocks are mined for energy production their composition and mineral constituents are of special interests to individuals and communities that are likely to be effected by these resources when mined and processed. The book highlights the environmental and health hazards of the spent shales after processing. These are significantly greater in volume than the rocks originally mined before processing. Toxic metals tend to double and triple their concentrations in the spent shales and will be leached into water sources and soils.Since oil shales as an energy resource are totally uneconomical; all oil shales, their mining and processing are heavily subsidised by governments and institutions using taxpayers money.
