Book The Generation of Edward Hyde

Download or read book The Generation of Edward Hyde written by Jay Bland and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde first appeared in 1886. Readers at the time commented on three major influences at work on the text: Darwinism, the Bible, and Platonism. With the passage of time commentators have tended to focus on either the Darwinian or the biblical implications surrounding Hyde, and the Platonic implications have been more or less overlooked. For a full understanding of Hyde all three must be considered; and they must all be considered together. This book locates Robert Louis Stevenson's Edward Hyde within the history of ideas. It examines a range of texts from earlier literature involving apes or ape-like creatures, thereby revealing a tradition which explores and questions the origins of mankind - theological, philosophical, and scientific - in an attempt to account for the presence of our lower impulses. The chosen texts show that, as knowledge of the natural world increases through exploration and scientific learning, earlier ways of looking at the world have accommodated new ideas by absorbing the new and incorporating it into the old mythological framework. The author demonstrates how this tradition feeds naturally into Stevenson's text, providing a Darwinian-biblical-Platonic context within which to examine Hyde.

Book excerpt: This spine-tingling volume collects some of Robert Louis Stevenson’s stories first published in the late 19th century for a new generation of young readers—featuring a freshly reimagined cover! Dr. Henry Jekyll is a respectable man, sociable and well-liked, so his friends Mr. Utterson and Mr. Enfield are concerned when Dr. Jekyll appears linked to Edward Hyde. Mr. Hyde’s outbursts of violence have their small community on edge; he may be small in stature, but no one can deny he’s terribly dangerous, self-indulgent, and even evil. As Dr. Jekyll’s behavior grows more erratic and Mr. Utterson circles in ever closer to the elusive Mr. Hyde, the shocking truth of the relationship between the good doctor and the unholy terror comes to light—a chain of events set off by a repressed man giving himself over wholly to the worst of his vices and shame. Also included are “The Body Snatcher,” a story about medical students haunted by what they’ve done to obtain cadavers, and “The Bottle Imp,” a tale of a man who buys a cursed bottle who learns about the consequences of wishes.

This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon as Statesman Historian and Chancellor of the University: A Lecture Delivered on February 18, 1909 Tercentenaries and similar celebrations of the births of great men are useful, though becoming somewhat hackneyed. We hear so much about the great men of the moment that we are in danger of ceasing to remember the greater men of the past. I do not mean that we are in danger of forgetting their names, but of forgetting what manner of men they were, and what they did to serve their own generation, and through it ours, and those to come. It is well, therefore, that at set times and seasons we should call to mind the things which are forgotten, and that our University should say to itself, as our colleges do, Let us now praise famous men and our fathers that begat us.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two centuries, Edward Hyde, Viscount Cornbury--royal governor of New York and New Jersey from 1702 to 1708--has been a despised figure, whose alleged transgressions ranged from raiding the public treasury to scandalizing his subjects by parading through the streets of New York City dressed as a woman. Now, Patricia Bonomi offers a challenging reassessment of Cornbury. She explores his life and experiences to illuminate such topics as imperial political culture; gossip, Grub Street, and the climate of slander; early modern sexual culture; and constitutional perceptions in an era of reform. In a tour de force of scholarly detective work, Bonomi also reappraises the most "conclusive" piece of evidence used to indict Cornbury--a celebrated portrait, said to represent the governor in female dress, that hangs today in the New-York Historical Society. Stripping away the many layers of "the Cornbury myth," this innovative work brings to life a fascinating man and reveals the conflicting emotions and loyalties that shaped the politics of the First British Empire. "A tour de force of historical detection.--Tim Hilchey, New York Times Book Review "Bonomi's book is more than an exoneration of Cornbury. It is a case study of what she aptly calls the politics of reputation." --Edmund S. Morgan, New York Review of Books "A fascinating, authoritative glimpse into the seamy underside of imperial politics in the late Stuart era.--Timothy D. Hall, Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography "An intriguing detective story that....casts light upon the operation of political power in the past and the nature of history writing in the present.--Alan Taylor, New Republic For more than two centuries, Edward Hyde, Viscount Cornbury--royal governor of New York and New Jersey from 1702 to 1708--has been a despised figure whose alleged transgressions ranged from looting the colonial treasury to public cross dressing in New York City. Stripping away the many layers of "the Cornbury myth," Patricia Bonomi offers a challenging reassessment of this fascinating figure and of the rough and tumble political culture of the First British Empire--with its muckraking press, salacious gossip, and conflicting imperial loyalties. -->
