Book excerpt: Jefferson Barracks was founded in 1826 to become the United States Army's first infantry School of Practice. In addition to serving as a school of practice, Jefferson Barracks was a military reservation during the settlement of the western territories. As such, most units of the army called Jefferson Barracks home at some point in time during the nineteenth century. The first five mounted regiments in the army all organized at Jefferson Barracks: the Regiment of Dragoons, in 1833; the Second Dragoons, in 1836; the Regiment of Mounted Rifles, in 1846; and the First and Second Cavalry Regiments, in 1855. With many different units stationed at Jefferson Barracks at one time or another and the new units organizing there, the best and brightest young officers in the army were sure to appear at this important military post at some point. In addition, troops from Jefferson Barracks took part in every conflict in which the United States was involved from the Black Hawk War in 1832 through World War II. This book provides a brief biography of the officers that served at Jefferson Barracks who became general officers in both the U.S. Army and the Army of the Confederate States of America. The book also contains a brief biography of the men who were awarded the Medal of Honor and who served at Jefferson Barracks.

Book excerpt: Since it was founded in 1826, Jefferson Barracks has stood for nearly two centuries as a symbol for many aspects of America's history. Many explorative expeditions in the 19th century launched from Jefferson Barracks, an iconic gateway to the West during the country's expansion. A training ground for new programs, Jefferson Barracks was the home of America's first permanent Dragoons (later the United States Cavalry), first School of Infantry, and first regiment of buffalo soldiers. The largest induction and mustering-out center during both the First and Second World Wars, it housed and trained a myriad of soldiers before and after their deployments. Now the home of the Missouri Air National Guard, a Veterans Administration hospital, Jefferson Barracks Historic Park, a national cemetery, and a growing museum district, Jefferson Barracks is preserving its place in history as well as serving toward America's future. The historic images in this book illustrate a rich history of Jefferson Barracks through some of its citizen soldiers--famous and not--and through the incidents that made it an American icon.

Book Brigadier General Jefferson C Davis Civil War General

Download or read book Brigadier General Jefferson C Davis Civil War General written by Major Bruce V. Sones and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a historical analysis and an assessment of Brigadier General Jefferson C. Davis’ life with special emphasis on his division’s performance during the Civil War. The thesis will discuss Davis’ quick rise through the military ranks, which led to his eventual assumption of a corps command by the end of the Civil War. Davis’ career was not without controversy. He was a non-traditional soldier in an army that was very traditional. He was a tough disciplinarian and took training of soldiers seriously. He was also aggressive, feisty, and confrontational. It was these later characteristics that on occasion led him into trouble with his superiors and may have been determiners in his non-selection for promotions and specific assignments. The thesis begins with an examination of Davis’ background and life from his birth through his participation in the Mexican War and the initiation of hostilities at Fort Sumter. Next, Davis’ Civil War experiences to include the Battles of Pea Ridge and Murfreesboro and details of Davis’ performance at the Battle of Chickamauga will be discussed. Thereafter, Davis’ march through the South with General Sherman and the remainder of his military career and life will be discussed. Finally, an analysis will be presented of who Davis was and why he did or did not achieve the potential that he thought he deserved.
