This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General Principles of Physical Science an Introduction to the Study of the General Principles of Chemistry As the title of this book indicates, its purpose is to present the general concepts and laws of physics and chemistry which lie at the basis of the modern science of theoretical chemistry. It forms the first, introductory part of a projected work upon this science, to be entitled the General Principles of Chemistry, the later parts of which are to treat, in succession, of the General Theories of Chemistry, of the Relations between Physical Properties and Chemical Composition, of the Principles relating to the Occurrence and Equilibrium of Chemical Changes, and of the Principles relating to the Energy-changes Attending Chemical Changes. As the work has had to be discontinued, it has been thought advisable to publish the part already completed, in the hope that it may assist students of theoretical chemistry by supplying, in a concise and consistent form, the essential preliminary knowledge of the fundamental principles of physical science. The method of presentation of these principles may also be of interest to teachers of general physics and chemistry, since an effort has been made to attain precision in the statement of laws and definitions, since the energy-concept has been employed, as far as seemed possible, as the basis of the consideration of other physical concepts, and since the difficult subject of the Second Law of Energetics has been very fully discussed from a non-mathematical standpoint. The treatment throughout is a systematic, not a historical one. It is essentially non-mathematical, but it is assumed that the reader knows the significance of differential and integral expressions, and that he is acquainted with a few of the simpler operations of the Calculus. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Physics, Designed for Use as a Textbook of General Physics When a man exerts his muscles in moving a body or in pushing or pulling a body which he cannot move, he is con scious of the exertion of force. In many cases, as when he bends a spring or sustains a weight, he interprets his sensa tion by saying, that the body against which he acts exerts a force in the opposite direction to the one which he is exerting and of equal magnitude. He further believes that the body, when in the same position or condition, is still exerting a force, even though he does not directly perceive the counter acting force. He thus feels willing to use bodies in certain conditions or positions as the means by which forces may be exerted. When a body is sustained in the air by the hand, the force exerted by the hand, as is shown by universal experience, is directed vertically upwards. The force which the body is assumed to exert in the opposite direction or vertically down wards, is called its weight. Universal experience has shown that the weight of a body depends on its size and on the material of which it is composed. If different bodies com posed of the same material and of equal volume are tested by A the hand, or.in any other way, it is found that their weights are equal. Two of these bodies will have the same weight as a body of the same material and of a volume double that of either one of them. By suitable. Combinations of equal weights, any one of which is selected as a unit, a scale of forces can be constructed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Chemistry, Vol. 1: Principles and Applications This book has been written to meet the demand for a Simple and practical treatment of the principles and applications of Chemistry. The author realizes that demands are now being made of teachers of Chemistry which would hardly have been considered several years ago. Not only must the student be taught the principles of chemistry and their applications in daily life, but he must be taught in such a way that, Should occasion arise, he can use chemistry in earning a living. The plea SO long made that chemistry is practical and useful is now being tested. Consequently the author has kept one thought in mind during the preparation of this book, viz.: principles and applications must go hand in hand. Principles are the foundation upon which applications rest. To teach either one exclusively is hazardous, for when separated one is as barren as the other is superficial. The author has aimed to include in this book not only the principles of Chemistry universally regarded as an essential part of a well-rounded course, but also numerous practical applications. First, the text includes a clear, Simple treatment of the facts, laws, theories, and principles that serve as the foundation of chemistry. This material is written in a style which assumes that the book is to be read, studied, and used by beginners. Special efiort has been made to present very clearly such needful topics as atomic weights, equations, and valence. All of this material is made more serviceable by a liberal selection of original exercises and problems containing many novel and attractive features. Teachers will find in these exercises and problems abundant material to drive home principles and arouse interest in the vocational aspects of chemistry. Book An Introduction to the Principles of Physical

Download or read book An Introduction to the Principles of Physical written by Edward W. Washburn and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Principles of Physical: Chemistry From the Standpoint of Modern Atomistics As indicated by the title, the purpose of this book is to present the principles of modern physical chemistry in the form of a systematic course of instruction and training. While designed primarily for classes composed of students who purpose to become professional chemists or physicists, it is hoped that it will serve as a suitable foundational course for any class of students who wish to obtain a usable knowledge of the subject. To the student or reader who wishes merely a general or cultural familiarity with the field covered by physical chemistry the book will probably not appeal very strongly, since the subject is designedly presented in such a manner as to require the student to do a large part of the reasoning, and many portions of the book can scarcely be pursued to advantage by most beginners in the subject except under the direction of a competent instructor. The method of presentation adopted presupposes on the part of the student a collegiate training in general or elementary chemistry and in general physics, and a training in mathematics which includes the elements of the differential and integral calculus. The author is aware that in many elementary textbooks of Physical Chemistry it is customary to avoid the use of the calculus as far as possible, frequently even with the sacrifice of accuracy and at the risk of conveying erroneous impressions concerning some of the most fundamental relationships; and in those cases where the use of the calculus seems to be unavoidable some authors have felt, it incumbent upon themselves to assume a somewhat apologetic attitude and to explain that the student must take on faith "these few derivations" but that he should not allow this fact to worry him, since with the aid of the accompanying explanations and illustrations he will still be able to understand the relationships and to apply them, even though he is not in a position to appreciate clearly what is involved in their derivation. Book The Fundamental Principles of Chemistry

Download or read book The Fundamental Principles of Chemistry written by Wilhelm Ostwald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Principles of Chemistry: An Introduction to All Text-Books of Chemistry In Chemistry research of this kind has been undertaken only casually and over small portions of the field. Franz Wald is one of the independents who has been working along this line for many years. General appreciation of the fundamental character of such investigation extends very slowly indeed. Three years ago, on the occasion of the Faraday lecture, I made an attempt to arouse the interest of chemists in these matters, but the result was not very encouraging. But few expressions of opinion were offered on this occasion, and these were largely contradictory in nature. It was quite evident that the question at issue was not clearly understood, and the entire matter was strange, even to chemists of note. But I know from personal experience that patient and continued labour can accomplish wonders even when the case seems hopeless. One must wait for the right time, and I am convinced that the time for this matter has arrived. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
