Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genera of Fishes, Vol. 3: From Guenther to Gill, 1859-1880, Twenty-Two Years, With the Accepted Type of Each; A Contribution to the Stability of Scientific Nomenclature The present memoir is the third part Of a catalogue of the generic names applied to fishes subsequent to January 1, 1858. With the other parts it is a contribution to the stability Of scientific nomenclature, the genera being listed in order of date accompanied by the indication Of the type Species of each. The first part (1758 to 1833) was intended to serve as an aid to the International Commission Of Zoological Nomenclature by bringing to gether the generic names Of fishes as proposed in the formative period of classification. Together with the data by which authors who failed to con form to the Linnaean system could be considered, each on his merits. I had at first no intention Of continuing the series beyond 1833, but the data gathered for the first part seemed to make the compilation of the catalogue worth while. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Of all the literature I use while preparing field guides for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Nelson's Fishes of the World is, by far, the one I refer to most often. [This] book is a standard reference . . . I continue to use it extensively in the ichthyology courses I teach, particularly in laboratory sessions." -Kent E. Carpenter Old Dominion University "Fishes of the World is a unique and essential resource for anyone seriously interested in the diversity and evolution of fishes. The family accounts provide quick summaries of current knowledge on all groups of living fishes and many key fossil taxa. It is a required work for every student in my laboratory." -William E. Bemis Kingsbury Director of Shoals Marine Laboratory, Cornell University "Only classics are known by the single name of their author, and certainly [Nelson's book] has for four editions been such a book for all those who seek an accessible, up-to-date, readable reference on fish classification. Once again, Nelson presents a balanced view of the sometimes tumultuous, but ever-exciting, study of the phylogenetic relationships and classification of fishes. In doing so, Nelson makes an excellent case for organismal biology, highlighting the many and varied morphological characters we use to diagnose fish taxa and differentiate among the 515 families of living species." -Lynne R. Parenti Curator of Fishes and Research Scientist, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution Fishes of the World, Fourth Edition is the updated edition of a true classic in the field. A unique presentation of a modern, cladistically based classification of all the major living and fossil fish groups, this indispensable reference helps scientists and others identify and classify specimens, make familial connections, understand the evolution of fishes, and springboard into further research. The taxonomy of fishes presented includes the anatomical characteristics, distribution, common and scientific names, and phylogenetic relationships for all 515 families of living fishes. Packed with representative species drawings and information on phylogentic relationships, this informative Fourth Edition features: * Both fossil and extant species * More than 500 illustrations * Fully vetted scientific and common names * An extensive bibliography

Book Osteology Phylogeny and Higher Classification of the Fishes of the Order Plectognathi Tetraodontiformes

Download or read book Osteology Phylogeny and Higher Classification of the Fishes of the Order Plectognathi Tetraodontiformes written by James C. Tyler and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The osteology of over 160 species of fossil and Recent plectognath or tetradontiform fishes is described and illustrated in relation to the supposed phylogeny and proposed higher classification (subfamilial to ordinal levels) of this group of approximately 320 Recent species of primarily tropical and temperate forms of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The history of the classification and of the previous work on the osteology of the order is reviewed, while one new species (Acanthopleurus collettei, Oligocene of Canton Glarus, Switzerland) and one new genus (Eotetraodon, Eocene of Monte Bolca, Italy) are described. Comparative inclusive and exclusive definition are given for all higher categories based on both external and internal anatomical features. The Order Plectognathi (Tetraodontiformes) is divided into two suborders, the Sclerodermi or Balistoidei and the Gymnodontes or Tetraodontoidei, with a variety of other infraordinal and superfamilial categories, and 10 families, with subfamilial groupings in 4 of the latter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reef Fishes of the East Indies is a 3-volume set. Stretching from the Andaman Sea to the Solomon Islands, the East Indies encompasses a vast array of marine habitats and unsurpassed marine biological diversity. It is home to approximately 2,600 species occurring on coral reefs and nearby habitats. Reef Fishes of the East Indies presents the first truly comprehensive treatment of the region's reef fish fauna in nearly a century. This monumental three-volume set is richly illustrated with more than 3,600 color photographs. The informative text provides current information on the classification, habitat, and distributional range of each species as well as an overall synopsis for each of the 120 families covered. Many of the featured species have not been previously recorded from the region, nor have their photographs appeared in print. The book represents the culmination of the prolific careers of two dedicated marine biologists, Dr. Gerald R. Allen and Dr. Mark V. Erdmann, who have spent a combined total in excess of 60 years exploring and describing the piscene treasures in the "heart" of marine fish biodiversity. Reef Fishes of the East Indies is an essential reference for biologists, naturalists, and scuba divers. This is the only reference that covers every known reef fish from the East Indian region. The book has been written to engender an appreciation of the region's amazing biodiversity and the urgent need to conserve it for the benefit of future generations.

Book Interrelationships of Fishes

Download or read book Interrelationships of Fishes written by Melanie L.J. Stiassny and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1996-11-08 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising by far the largest and most diverse group of vertebrates, fishes occupy a broad swathe of habitats ranging from the deepest ocean abyss to the highest mountain lakes. Such incredible ecological diversity and the resultant variety in lifestyle, anatomy, physiology and behavior, make unraveling the evolutionary history of fishes a daunting task. The successor of a classic volume by the same title, Interrelationships of Fishes, provides the latest in the "state of the art" of systematics and classification for many of the major groups of fishes. In providing a sound phylogenetic framework from leading authorities in the field, this book is an indispensable reference for a broad range of biologists, especially students of fish behavior, anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, genetics and ecology--in fact, anyone who wishes to interpret their work on fishes in an evolutionary context. Provides thorough and comprehensive treatment of the Phylogency of fishes Assembles an International team of expert contributors Useful to a wide variety of fish biologists
