Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown, in the County of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts: 1629-1818; A-J A few cases will be met with of a baptismal name in capitals beginning a paragraph and followed by a group number only - the insertion of the details concerning suich persons unfortunately having been deferred by the author for reasons unknown to us. Ebenezer Wade 10 is a case in point. There are also a very few cases in which a hiatus occurs in the enumeration of the groups in a family where no omission of matter appears to have been made. The Shed family furnishes an illustration of these lapses, there being no group numbered 3. These cases are presented, however, as they stand in the author's manuscript. Some families were found to be so numerous as to require special indices. These are placed at the beginning of the articles, and refer by group number to every head of a family, whether his name stands as the head of a group or occurs within one as having contracted marriage. Book excerpt: "Wyman's work, compiled over thirty years and originally published in 1879, is notable not only as a comprehensive collection of genealogies of early settlers but also as an abstract of real estate records, church records, gravestone inscriptions, and family records, thus giving us a picture of both the people and places in the town" -- Publisher's description.

Download or read book Early New England written by David A. Weir and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of covenant was at the heart of early New England society. In this singular book David Weir explores the origins and development of covenant thought in America by analyzing the town and church documents written and signed by seventeenth-century New Englanders. Unmatched in the breadth of its scope, this study takes into account all of the surviving covenants in all of the New England colonies. Weir's comprehensive survey of seventeenth-century covenants leads to a more complex picture of early New England than what emerges from looking at only a few famous civil covenants like the Mayflower Compact. His work shows covenant theology being transformed into a covenantal vision for society but also reveals the stress and strains on church-state relationships that eventually led to more secularized colonial governments in eighteenth-century New England. He concludes that New England colonial society was much more "English" and much less "American" than has often been thought, and that the New England colonies substantially mirrored religious and social change in Old England.
